My First Oysters

Well.. the first two logs starting pinning.. So, I fired up the GH and put them into fruiting. These are Pleurotus Ostreatus. I have more of those colonizing and also Pleurotus Djamor/Pleurotus Ostreatus logs coming (all growing in this sub).
I am so happy to finally get this going.. Hope all goes well.. I will update this, and get some advice about everything along the way.

So far it looks like my GH may be too CO2 rich for pretty oysters and my temps are higher than wanted.. so I will be playing with ways to get around this or at least improve it. Though I did see a grow in my other thread that was a Florida outdoor grow.. so maybe the fresh air is more important than the temp.. finding a happy medium will be my mission.

I do have a question.. when CO2 is high and temps are high.. you get the club shaped fruits.. Does taste suffer as well?

i don't think so but i an new too.
my logs are starting to fruit too!
have you looked into the wet bulb idea? i think it might work for you if you add a vent fan 24/7 and run the ultrasonic linked to the wet bulb.
i ordered one from granger sat. it should be here in the middle of the pin set. i hope.
also as my green house is set up with 1 spinner type humidifier and an ultrasonic i run the spinner set to around 78%rh and the ultra on an 10 min / hr timer. as of now i cycle from 78% rh to 88%rh
pins are looking good. as are yours.
what are your timers set to? and what rh%'s do you range to and from?
the oyster i am growing is a wild capture and a strong one at that. i can't wait to see what size it turns out to be. i wonder what size you are expecting.

Well.. my RH settles at 98%.. drops to 90-92% after the exhaust cycle.. the air pump feeding the home made cool mist is a 2.6 lph that runs 24/7. I just noticed, because the GH is sealed, that it inflates the GH after a few minutes.. I am now thinking that between that air and the exhaust cycles I might get enough FAE.. maybe. I might try to open some holes at the bottom.. and use poly-fill in them, maybe the pump air will send a slow steady flow of CO2 out of it.. problem being that the exhaust fan will only suck from there too.. not sure. Exhaust cycles are now set to run 15 minutes every 2 hrs.

I am setting up a timer for the ultra sonic head unit.. we'll see where I can get it.

Yeah.. I just went through "the book" and the types I have growing will fruit in my temp range (just not as short and fat as I would like).. but they all have the 85-90% recommendation you stated for fruiting.. so I will start playing with that.. I still do not have the recommended amount of fresh air exchanges per hour.. but again hopefully the combination of air pump and exhaust will get me into a tolerable level, and if all other factors are right on.. who knows.
Thanks!

Why do you think you have an issue?
It looks like they are just starting to pin.
My first oyster log produced massive mycelium balls from which the oysters sprouted.
Wait awhile and see what happens.
Make sure you have enough FAE.
Humidity can cycle from 85% to 98%.
Paul Stamets say, at his seminar, that he cycles his fruiting room from 85 to 98% RH. He likes to get it to 85% therby drying it out a little which reduces contams.

Well.. my honest concern is FAE.. that has been in question for me since I started making the GH for these. And, as that remains an issue for me, until I see it develop, I want to give them the best shot by perfecting the rest of the parameters that I can. I can just pop holes or something for more FAE, but I am worried about the massive spore drop (fruiting 8 logs at a time in two GH's) affecting my living air.. hence the sealed GH.. hence the FAE issue.. So, I guess it is all based on that.

i use this guy with the 2 chambers and it draws air from each threw 2 balls of pollyfill to filter air. it seems to work so far and i will keep an eye on it so it does not clog up.

I present this just to inspire your ideas.

This is my chamber.
The lower left is a tub which contains a ultrasonic element.
The fan is a 171 cfm inline 4in fan whose speed is controlled by a "router speed control" from Harbor Freight.
Both ultrasonic and fan are on a timer.
The chamber is air tight - with two 4in hoses exiting the bottom right and exit out a window - I'm hoping this exhausts most of the spores since I pump in a lot of fresh air.
I have used this now for 9 months with no signs of spores coating the walls or floor.
I track humidity - and cycle the unit from 85% to 99% RH.
This has worked very well for me - I hope it might insipre ideas of your own.
Those are two Blue Oyster straw logs fruiting in the chamber.
Good Luck.

Thanks for the pic.. I like your set up better than mine. I think in the future, when I can, I am going to automate with the CO2 meter as recommended by RR. That would verify fresh air and keep CO2 to below the limits preferred by oysters. That, in itself, will verify fresh air content, and the humidity can be tracked another way.. such as with ratdog's wet bulb/dry bulb idea.. I think that would equal environmental perfection for me.. but I spent my limit on this set up and have to wait until January for more purchases on this.. until then.. well, thanks for the luck!

I grow all my oyster outside in my shop\greenhouse. i have a chamber built with a home made humidifer like yours herbal.. If you harvest them a little early u can stop alotta spores dropping. I would do that since your indoors. i left a bag inside fruiting the other day to see how many spores were dropped. there wasn't many, but i harvested a little early. (i know u can't see spore dropped but,if it gets thick u can see it under the mushroom usually )..looks like your logs r coming along pretty good. if your worried about fresh air u can just hook a fan up to run in there everyonce in a while. the co2 should just leak out the bottom of the gh if it is open since its the heavier air

the bottom isn't open.. but I did just open the zippers up some. I was thinking the same thing.. I can at least leave it cracked until they mature (if I don't pick them before they drop a load).. in theory they should form ok, then just be a little CO2 screwed there at the end when I zip it back up.. I know I can't do outside yet.. its just too hot still. But when temps start to drop I am going to do just that.
