Western Vulcan de Fuego, Mexico
#11203022 - 10/07/09 07:43 PM (14 years, 5 months ago) |

Many thanks to Cactu and Airdog for making all of this possible.
We slept in a cool barn type structure - not really vacant but not really occupied either. Saved having to set up tents.
We decided to get up real early so we could hunt as many mushrooms as possible and still get back to Guadalajara in the afternoon.
This is Vulcan de Fuego, the most active volcano in Mexico and one of the most dangerous in the world.
5:30am
This place has really interesting tropical plants (Cuphea sp.)
The locals identified this as a Dwarf Eagle, though I am unable to figure out which species they were referring to.
A rare terrestrial orchid - usually they grow on trees.
I don't know what type of flowers these are.
Dahlia's are extremely colorful
Here is a coffee tree growing at the yerba buena restaurant, our favorite restaurant in the area.
This may be the most authentic restaurant in all of Mexico. Here is the kitchen stove. When they are not cooking food here they are roasting fresh coffee beans.
Here is Cactu griding coffee that was still hot from roasting. It was very difficult to grind and made Cactu very strong! Until they told him the secret to using the machine and then it was pretty easy.

Nice shots of a beautiful place Alan.
The plant in the third picture is in the genus Cuphea, also known as the cigarette bush.
Only the top half of the pictures loaded for me.

Psilocybe caerulescens
Sometimes they grow right out of the sandy wall
Or out of the sandy dry creek bed
I tried to make these look a bit like nipples
Kind of worked
Note Cactu's infamous styrofoam box in the background

Other mushrooms found in the same habitat include this almond smelling Agaricus:
A Pholiota
Amparoina spinosissima (previously known as Mycena spinosissima)
Copelandia cyanescens
On cow dung. I have no idea how cows got down here. But they did.
No one has been able to figure out what this is. If I had known it was going to be such a problem I would have saved a sample.
Another unknown
Another unknown
This Conocybe was growing right out of a rock!
The first time I have seen this particular substrate.
Dacryopinax elegans
ID'd by Tom Volk, who said "This looks exactly what I have seen in Wisconsin, North Carolina and elsewherein the USA. It belongs in the Dacrymycetaceae, with tuning fork basidia. Wood decayer, with “reverse cups.” Cool fungus."
Gymnopilus sp.
This Xylaria is really cool. Tried to save some for ToxicMan but I am not sure if it made it back.
Daldinia eschscholzii
This might be a Clitocybula
Bolbitius
Ganoderma sp.

Once again, great pics. The minature eagle looks more like a parrot.
I noticed that Psilocybe caerulescens looks very similar to weilii, how close is the relationship between the two?
Is there a difference in strength?
Would weilii grow in the same enviroment, has anyone tried to spread spores there?

Great pictures. Nice report.
For 5:30am (first 2 pics) it was surprisingly light outside.
The dwarf eagle does have a parrot like look.
Nice variety of active and inactive shrooms!

They are very closely related mushrooms in the same section... I have never tried weilii but i guess they might be of equal potency... caerulescens is super potent when fresh....
bout spreading spores... why make 2 similar mushrooms to compete... i dont think weilii is hardy enough for caerulescens habitat

Extremely close. Almost the same mushroom. One difference is the pleurocystidia. I am not sure if there are any macroscopic differences.

I took a print from Alan of the copelandia cyanescens he shows in the picture above and fruited it. The fruits are among the most petite I've seen for the species, with even the largest caps no bigger than a nickle. The first flush has been a low yield, but I've seen other times when the second flush is the "big one". What was more remarkable was the rapid, deep bluing I saw.
In the pictures you can see where I tried to water the bottoms of the fruiting bodies but the tops got wet (which is allegedly not good for this species but they're about at harvest anyway and the ground was too dry). What was amazing is that in only a few minutes, the water caused a bluing reaction so intense that there was literally blue drops coming off some of the caps. Judging from the highly vigorous bluing reaction, I suspect the strain may be very potent.

well in some places well cold front paneolus and ps cubensis can grow on winter and spring usually in the coastal regions and where the cold front bring rain since they grow so fast in manure , but usually all psilocybes or derrumbes are only in the summer and fall.

It takes about a week for agar grow out, a week for the liquid culture to develop very dense (if constant stirred), a week for the spawn bag fruit out substrate to colonize, then about 10 days to fruits after the trays are laid/cased. So about 4 or 5 weeks. If you start with a liquid culture in a vacutainer, then you can reduce the time by a week or 3 to 4 weeks.

May through November in the places we visited (Jalisco and Michoacan).

The spores are probably not from the Copelandia in this thread because I don't think any of them from this location got printed. I think they fell apart/dried out/got crushed by P. caerulescens before we got home. Its possible though. Some of the fruits I found in this location were extremely tiny. Its probably from the first picture in this thread (or this thread for mycotopia users). Did the bag it was in give a strain name?
I still have a few prints left for qualified researchers.
What did you use for substrate?
I have it going on agar and it is really happy so far.

As anyone knows who has read any of my grow posts, I always go direct from liquid culture to the final fruit out substrate in large spawn bags then lay trays. Trays are about 1.5" deep with a very thin 50/50 casing (less than 1/4"). The fruiting substrate formula for 3 large spawn bags is as follows:
Dehydrated horse manure 75 oz Dry WBS 18.8 oz water 188 oz vermiculite 2.5 liter Final moisture content was confirmed via microwave dehydration testing to be 65%

This name is a wild strain at America? Congratulate you. I did not see the fruit a Pan. cyan already pair of the years. The Last experiment with cool climate outdoor did not give the fruit. Today I have found several not active dung shroom on lifeless place of the clay .

The mushroom strain has been producing literally a flush per day it seems with thousands of tiny fruits. It is an interesting strain for sure. I never saw so many tiny mushrooms! Here are a few from yesterday's batch:
And today there are hundreds more.

After literally thousands of fruits, here is the sixth flush:
They just keep producing those tiny ones. The strain may not produce big fruits, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in numbers.

The quality of that video is exceptional for a camera in my opinion. The audio is good and the picture is as clear as some digital camcorders.
I am going to try to grow psilocybe caerulescens soon, so it's nice to see their natural habitat. It looks like sandy loam to me. Is that how you'd describe it?

Yes, sandy loam sounds about right. Psilocybe caerulescens grows from buried woody debris on the shore of the dry creek beds, only right where the leaves and sticks from the trees fall into the rocky shore. The zone that has mushrooms is only a few feet wide but is many miles long, going from below 1300 meters and continuing up to at least 2000 meters. Captain future grew some recently (a strain from this location) and he had really good luck only after letting them sit for 5 months.
