Liberty Cap/P.Semilanceata 2009 Season (In Your Location)
    #11159473 - 09/30/09 06:23 PM (2 years, 4 months ago)

I'm here in NS, Canada and "our" season began (at least for me) yesterday!... It was quite wet out with an average temp of around 13*C (55.4*F). It dropped to a low of 10.3*C but the air felt surprisingly warm.. I went in a T-Shirt & shorts and oddly enough got more mosquito bites then I've had all summer!.. I found about 20-25 "Semi's" on the outer edges of my field in the highest elevation...Most of them were "Rain-Drained" (Brownish-Tan Color)..but I did find one large Creamy White Cap. I love seeing those monsters towering above the grass like a Flag.. They always have a bunch of "friends" laying low around them. I won't be able to get out for a few days now though (stupid work).. It's painful having to wait..My ultimate goal is to compile an informational paper about "Semi" habitats & Conditions... I have all the usual "Generic" information about them but am looking for individuals who have their own personal observations & opinions on the topic... Grass types, weather conditions, soil compositions & Ph Levels are all of interest as well as anything you mite feel is relevant.... I've kept and will continue keeping weather logs etc. as the season progresses. I will gladly share any info I acquire as well.... As i said all feedback will be appreciated and Good Luck Hunting!

On a recent road trip to an inland area of NS I came across "perfect" Semi specimens in Very tall rank grass... the area which I found them in was always along the right hand side of the trail, which remained shaded longer than other areas of the field thus staying cooler longer!

The Semi's had exceedingly long stems allowing their perfect creamy colored caps to be easily seen within the long grass. The area had been mowed down towards the end of summer allowing a blanket of decomposing grass near by.. as well as wood chips from a logging area further up the path. The tall shaded grass also remained moist longer after the sun arose!.. I can't help but wonder if the rest of the grass hadn't been cut would it to have created the right habitat for these little monsters as well?... Or were they only favoring that side of the trail due to the cooler temperature & increased moisture?

The next area I searched I was sure would have Semi's!... I was wrong!
The former cattle field was grown in with varying levels of grass & shade..in some areas it did have clover grass which we were always told thwarted Semi's (whether or not this is true).. There were also some rooted vegetables of some sort (perhaps beets) growing sporadically throughout the field. I don't know if maybe these vegetables effected the soils pH causing Semi's not to grow? or if possibly because it was a very low lying area instead of on a cliff like where I had previously found them!.. maybe none of that mattered and there were simply never any spores distributed there!.. whatever the case it would have been nice to have such an enormous field to search.

Several better looking Farm fields are located in the area but farmers generally don't take kindly to people trespassing so I'm hoping to talk to one of them next time and arrange to let the dogs run in their field if possible! After returning from the fruitless field I discovered my second and final patch. This little patch of approximately 10-15 caps really busted some myths about Semi habitats for me!.. The ditch-like area along the side of the driveway was maybe half a foot in width and covered with previously cut branches & saw dust. I know Semis don't grow on wood debris so I never really questioned that the shavings may have just covered the area after the fact!.. The area was boggy and had alder-like bushes growing in it.. and there in the middle of the moss I saw one!.. Once again I flashed back to being a kid and the "Older Guys" telling me if there's moss you don't find Semi's!.. Up until now that theory had always proven right, but now I had discovered that given the appropriate circumstances on a rare occasion it was possible to find a Semi coming through Moss!

Anyway I think that's all my findings from this trip...No one else seems to have any experiences they want to share... Like I said anything about your hunting experiences, myths whatever... shit even if you just wanna show me some pics with where you're located! lol some feedback of any type would be nice!

Nice photos! Unusual habitat with that long grass.

I almost always find libs together with moss in the grass. But not the same specie as seen in your last photo.

The former cattle field looked great, but it seems like sometimes the perfect habitats are unpopulated, often no shrooms of any kind.

But as you say, cloves are great! And cow pastures rule! (together with places where big lawn mowers mow, golf courses, industry/state property, etc. Good at spreading spores)

Here in Sweden the season is over in the north, they had snow just a few days ago. But in the south it's still good for another few weeks of harvesting.

Yup.. It's been really wet here too!.. I figure the initial "Big Wave" is on it's way.. some low over night temps and some moderate daytime sun will hopefully do the trick!... Our season seems shorter over the last few years though.. sometimes we only get that one big rush and then the season is cut short prematurely!.. I can remember coming across patches of 500-600 caps regularly before.. now I'm lucky to see that once or twice a season.. last year 200 in a few hours was my best haul!... Thanks for the feedback and I look forward to hopefully posting a lot more before the seasons through! Also I'm trying to get a better quality camera before they're gone... I'm not overly happy with the picture quality so far!... thanks again and happy hunting!

Yeah knarkkorven you know!..lol...the lawns of government buildings down where I grew up were usually pretty good along with the newly built Park and Cop Station Lawn... It literally grew thousands... you could see them driving by in a car there were so many!.. They set up cameras to catch us picking so we wore Halloween masks.. They then sprayed the lawn with pesticides without warning anyone and several kids were hospitalized!..FTP!... sorry still a little mad over that one!.. I would love to eventually make a trip to Sweden for the season I think it would be incredible plus I've seen pics of some of the strains there..wow!..I think Scotland and Ireland would be nice to pick as well!.. For some reason around here it seems like the 2nd year after new sods are laid they develop fruit bodies..maybe it they just need to get rooted well?....The Golf courses here must be sprayed or something because we never find any form of Fungi on them. The Graveyards & baseball Fields are the most common areas for pickers here... both are usually mowed at the beginning of the season spreading spores everywhere!... Anyway I'm rambling now but I appreciate your info about over there... Hopefully some day I'll see it first hand... Good Luck Hunting!

zig-zag420 are you picking in areas where you've got them before? It seems like some of the spots around here change every couple years, or Maybe your location just hasn't had the proper conditions yet... I've picked from halifax down as far as Cape Breaton!..After this week should be prime time in a lot of areas!.. Where are you located at?.. also when you do start having luck let me know for sure.. It interests me to know how everyone's season differs!... Good luck hunting!

otispicks that's hilarious... I fall for that one all the time.. especially the first of the season when I really wanna see one!.. Dying dandelions can look so much like a Semi rising above the rest of the field with a thin stem and Cap-like top!... little white honeysuckles that are starting to wilt brown often fuck with my eyes too... of course sometimes maybe the joints make me overly optimistic in that case lol

lol... well "Zag" I searched Dartmouth for the first few years I lived here.. I thought for sure looking at some of the Lawns and other areas that there would be tons.... I dunno if the spores just never got distributed well around here or what but I haven't had the best Luck. I've found random little patches on occasion but when I've returned to those spots following years I've never found more!... Burnside Businesses almost all use lawn companies that use pesticides & even the commons and other areas I thought would be good just never seem to produce them!... Not many people around here even know about Semi's unless they grew up in the sticks... All they seem to know are Cubes and most don't even know much about them...the only "city people" I've heard talk about picking say that back in the day people used to go to Spryfield...I've never tried any spots there as I don't really know any locations to check out!... Good to know there's someone else from Tha Darkside in here though!.. lol..

that middle field that you were sure would have libs dont look like the right field to me... too plain. whenever i go lookin for a field i always watch out for one's with the obvious cows and sheep on but with the wild weeds that grow tall in the field like the one's in the pics below. look out for them factors and you'll never pass by another lib field again!

sazzelb I dunno maybe it's different where you're located but the fields we get them in generally don't have big weeds like those present!.. Quite the opposite here... nicely manicured lawns with a certain type of sod... or average grass fields with patches or "tufts" of tall varying length grass!.... Fields with animals in them are generally awesome but like I said, Trespassing on a farmers property down here can get you a quick introduction to a Shotgun lol.. Here are some pics of the kinds of grass we usually do well in.. My apologies to whomever took the pics I didn't properly catalog them so I can't properly credit them!.. It's just that they are good to describe the areas I mean right now!

Envix... I've heard good things about hunting in NY.. I realize it's a very big (understatement) area but hopefully you're close to natural Parks or some good fields.... Definately let me know if you're having any luck and what type of habitats your variety favors. Good luck Hunting!

I've heard good things about the Semi's over in Germany too! My girlfriends Family was originally from over there... Her Oma & Opa talked about the kids picking around where they were raised lol!

Naw... I've been picking Libs since I was real young.. Since all I knew them by was "Shrooms"... I've taken pics of all kinds of odd mushrooms but I don't pick what I'm not 100% on and Libs are kinda my specialty! You definitely want an expert with you if you're gonna pick anything you can't completely positively identify!.. I'm self taught and have come to learn a lot of what we were told as kids were bogus myths! lol When I was young and stupid I did drink a tea that "friends" of mine brewed later to find out what they had picked didn't appear to be libs! I found an article about a "new" variety of shrooms being studied and found it closely matched what they had picked!.. I've never come across any more literature on the subject though or even across what they had picked again... as I said though definitely enlist an expert before you pick any "It might Be's"....

Hey...I live in Victoria city on Vancouver Island...does anyone know if it's possible to find magic mushrooms here in town...or do I need to find a cow pasture up Island (Cowichan?)...I'd appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Yea for sure, i haven't even found my first active yet. I am waiting for all this rain to hold up, then I am going to hunt. Is long grass or shorter grass better to find libs? i have been hunting in the golf course behind my house, I have found many mushrooms but no libs!

I'm going to go look in some popular fishing spots/dirt roads leading to secluded areas in the country side when the rain holds up. Tall grasses, I would assume. less lawn mowing activity = more shrooms. or I would assume, I've never gone hunting before.

Well Mithras I’m not sure this is the best place to post that question…. This is more about “liberty Caps” and peoples experiences with habitat…I’m definitely not an expert!... especially about the West Coast but I’m pretty sure I’ve heard of people picking in Victoria. Whether or not they were Libs I don’t know!... You should possibly start your own thread or ask a professional maybe!... Pigpen03 I have a friend who said he used to get them in Brampton and Milton.. No Idea if they’re anywhere near you?… I’d suggest posting the question elsewhere would probably be your best bet as well!.. Good luck Hunting!

Zig-Zag  I hope you have better luck than I did with the Golf Courses around here!... I’ve combed the one “Up from the Bridge Terminal” Pretty extensively in past years with no luck! …. As for the short grass/long grass question also asked by Envix… I would try not to assume anything! Lol ... Libs seem to vary in different areas… I’ve found patches, of a few hundred, on very short well mowed lawns many times… A Baseball Field Frequented by massive “Ride-on Mowers” was one of my best spots for years! .
However… The last few I found were amongst almost knee high grass on the edge of a mowed field that still had “Mulch” scattered across it but no mushrooms… Personally I find my best spots now are… of average grass length with “Tufts” of long grass or, along “Ridges” where different grasses, or varying length grasses merge!... Since the taller grass creates shade it makes for cooler temperatures, which then result in more moisture staying in the area longer… This seems to generate very healthy looking specimens which literally “rise to the challenge” and manage to be seen protruding from the long thick grass!... Once you’ve found them in particular ways you’ll develop a gut feeling from the look of an area… it helps but… As I said.. try not to assume what they like too much!... Once you know they are local to your area take the time to look at different locations… you might be pleasantly surprised to find a place you would often pass is actually now your spot!

Yeah I walked around tha Darkside this week.... nada..lol..it sucks, I wish the commons had them... it would be so simple then!.. They seem to just be on certain Sods and not on "Natural" grass around here!.. I'm gonna try Halifax tomorrow or maybe figure out somewhere to try in Spryfield!... It seems to be an incredible day for hunting here so hopefully I'll have some good pics myself to post later on tonight!.. thanks for the feedback and good luck hunting!

Well there's been lots of rain for the last week and it's had an average minimum temperature of around 7*C... My main spot got Pillaged but I still found a separate area which netted me around 80-100 caps!.. It's been my best haul this year but nothing great!... The last few days have probably been Peak days for sure, but I've been stuck working!:mad2: .... Hopefully the rest of you are enjoying the season and not stuck at work as well! Here's a few crappy pics I took, as I was in a rush and it was getting dark!........Good luck Hunting!... I hope I'm there soon!

Well it definitely seems like rain for a week, followed by a couple days of cool dryer days triggered the first "Wave"... It's been on average below 10*C for the last week with the coldest days just passing.... Most of the specimens I found today were mature "Sun-ripe" caps (Golden & Weathered) I generally take that to mean good conditions the last couple days as it seems that's when most of them grew & it was the best groups I've seen this year!... Zig-Zag I'm wondering if you've had any luck yet?... I might be able to point you in a direction after I go investigate a new spot I have yet to confirm lol.. here's the pics

Well...with below average temps and a few thick frosts I thought The season may have died already!.. but after too many days working, I finally got out today and managed to grab a few caps!...the camera wasn't set properly and I was rushed so... I don't really have any worthy pics but I'm posting some poor quality pics of a "Mutant" that looks like it has one cap on another or something!... most of the caps I got today were extremely small, malformed, beat up or just not very typical looking!...I'm wondering are these just the last stragglers of the year?... or a few that weren't waiting for better conditions?.. anyway here's the crappy pics of the ugly Cap!

Well after some crappy weather and a long time trapped at work I thought my season was toast!... but the mushroom gods have smiled upon me!... I went to my home town in the "Stixxx" this weekend and although it stormed all of Sunday, Saturday was beautiful.. and not just weather wise!... my spots down there are so much more enjoyable to pick...I hit up a Park, two separate graveyards and 3 different Baseball fields and each one was awesome! I've noticed the look certainly varies from location to location for sure... one of the fields was cut super short and I almost left when I realized that they were growing with spiral stems and were tightly packed in the grass.. One of these mutants was fairly large and you could see the spores deposited on it's stem and the grass surrounding it!

The other areas were spots I used to go when I was younger and they didn't disappoint!... I got a lot of nice pictures of everything from "Sun Ripes", to "Rain Drains" to just perfect form "Semi's"!... I'll post all my decent pics in my journal but I'm gonna throw some here to show the range of their looks as well!... I sure wish I could have spent a week in these areas instead of half a day but it was still worth it for sure!.... Let me know how your making out with your semi seasons too and good luck hunting!

does it have to be land with animals on it or could it be any type of grassy field? I've been to a number of graveyards/golf courses (right next to a zoo, ironically) and have had no luck.

No Envix there don't have to be animals!... A basic search on the net will detail their habitats!... If you review my posts I talk about the types of areas "we" find them in here....You haven't found them before so are you aware of anyone who has? You can have the best looking habitat in the world but if spores were never distributed there it won't help!... If you don't know the types of areas that others have had luck in your best bet would be to check everywhere!...

Shit... your variety in Finland are sweet!... they look very "meaty"! They seem to have nice full caps and they're all very similar... Most of my finds are documented in my journal at http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/11105349 I just took the dogs out though and there is a very thick heavy frost on the ground.. It almost looks like snow! I'm thinking that might be my season... I thought there would be a lot more lib fanatics on this site who would post their finds... Maybe next season we could set up a joint thread about Libs and see if we can generate some more feedback?:mushroom2::thumbup:

Damn!... I wish I was in England now lol! that's a sweet looking haul there JonasQuim! What type of areas do you tend to pick over there? Libertycapper... Gotta love the 1st find...once you know they're there it's game on lol! Where I grew up we didn't have any cow fields but they grew on everyone's lawns... Baseball fields, graveyards & parks tended to be our most popular spots... Cow pastures are definitely Awesome though!.. I picked on some in Prince Edward Island and we were filling bread bags in 20 mins... that's unheard of where I'm at in Nova Scotia.. we really gotta work for them here!... psylosymonreturns Hope you have some luck too!..also just wondering but where are you located?

My main spot is around the bottom of a hill where cows previously grazed on the edge of a small wood. The grass is quite long so they tend to have nice long stems  The majority of the smaller ones came from the park in my village haha!

Shit... your variety in Finland are sweet!... they look very "meaty"!

Those "meaty ones" comes from the one cow pasture, which is my best spot for sure..in the other places libs ain't so large, I think that the nutrients are the "key".
Yeah, lets see what comes up in  the next year..

Wow sounds like the midlands is the place to be right now lol! I love it when I find Libs in tall grass... It makes for good hunting when you have nice big specimens! Good luck with the hunting over there... keep me posted for sure! Mikael yeah the Libs I pick definitely vary from location to location!.. The ones in my home town are for sure my favorite to hunt.. they're all pretty much uniform.. same height same general appearance etc.. My strangest area was the ball field I hit this year where they were all like "crop circle" mushrooms or something lol they had crazy twisted stems an all grew at or below the grass level, which was mowed as short as it could be!.. pretty different than most areas I pick for sure!

Liberty King: Yes it seem to be that libs can grow from very different kind of areas, and many different forms..
I mean I found them fruiting even in the swamp!
They were kind of small there, but lib is a lib, its all good!

Temps are getting colder now but im sure you've still got plenty of time to find some libs.  Fly agaric are beautiful and your time will come.... I was sooo pleased when I first spotted mine this year.

Rated you btw

OMG...psylosymonreturns... Those pics give me a rush just seeing them!.. when I was younger (not that I'm really old but I've been hunting since I was 13 lol) we used to get them in nice big patches and clusters like that!... Now a days the patches I do find are just single libs scattered around a 2-3 foot area.... I never find really dense clusters like those anymore...that grass looks awesome too... they stand out in it so well! Keep up the pics for sure they're definitely appreciated!
Dicky.. I hope you're right!... Here in NS it has been wet lately, but our cold snaps are pretty drastic!... I'm working two jobs at the moment trying to get a new place eventually so I'm kind of screwed for hunting time lately... It's killing me but if it works out hopefully then next year I'll be able to devote most of my time to "The Hunt!" lol... I wish you luck on your hunt and look forward to some more pics for sure!.... As for the Fly Agaric oh yeah my time will come lol... when it does you'll be the first to see! good luck hunting everyone and keep posting!

Holy Shit Dicky!... I dunno where to start! Lmfao!... The small town where I grew up used to have 1 insane field like that where Libs were soooo plentyful & enormus!.. the year I moved away they bulldozed it though!... Those pics are priceless... definitely a learning experience!
I haven't been caught by Po-Po myself but a friend of mine got charged with class 1 drug possession under the FDA!.. He wasn't even caught at the field.. His "Friends" (No Longer) got caught with some and all gave statements against him!.. I prefer to used a secluded "drop spot" when I pick just to limit what I do have in my possession.. I also make sure to pick Non-actives that I keep on me for any "Show & Tell" encounters! lol It is best not to even be startled by "Visitors".. the more calm you are the better..If you stash while you pick the most they can usually do is charge you for trespassing...Our cops actually set-up field raids and wait to catch kids it's pathetic! I don't pick fields that are visible anymore, unless I know the owners or have sought permission.. I had a couple farmers try and shoot me before.. not a pleasant experience lol! I find it almost impossible to leave a field when it's that good though! Definitely appreciate your tale & wicked pics... Truly incredible specimens!... Good luck hunting and keep me informed 4 sure!

haha liberty king,i too started picking at 13!! thats funny shit. i am glad you like the pics.this is from a field that was part of my original finds when i was 13! its nice to see its still going eh.this is the first time i have picked it in about 5 years though. its even better now though wich is wierd. its not only fruiting nice clusters of libs like that still, but also gigantic patcches of a blue ringer type psilocybe(stuntzii, fimetaria or subfimetaria).
thats hardcore your gustapo do that shit.fuckin bullshit.this country sucks more and more by the day.

i forgot to post this pic here from the first day of the season 2-3 weeks ago.

Yes definately a learning curve.... Im going to go back soon and get land owners permission to avoid any re occurances.... will defo keep you updated and maybe get some more pics.

The taking other specimens is also an idea we came up with on the way home and has been mentioned on here before so it seems thats what I will do next time.

psylosymonreturns... yeah you gotta love returning to a field from years ago only to find that it's become even more fruitful!
And yeah our cops are ridiculous... I get that it's their job but these arrogant pricks take pride in ruining the lives of some of these kids! a friend of mine was only ever caught for underage drinking (Whoopee who hasn't? lol) He got caught with 6 Libs in his hand in his grandmothers yard (Where they Grew) and ended up with an indictable/Felony record! He lost his job because he had drug charges so he couldn't pay the fine! that resulted in a breach charge so he ended up doing a month in a Provincial jail because he turned 18 before he was sentenced! His entire life was derailed... for what? so they could turn a curious kid into a "Criminal"!.. Sorry to ramble but things of this nature disgust me!
Anyway.. so I notice you lay out your libs on what looks like wax paper.. me too.. are yours lying in the sunlight by a door? I used to put mine in the window but now I just use a shelf in the laundry room..I wonder if natural light or warm air drying makes a notable difference?
Dicky... yeah you'll only perfect your pick method more and more as time progresses... Different areas often require different measures lol I've gone so far as to dress up for Halloween and spill my treat bag just to have an excuse to bend down and pick an awesome lawn! lmao.. I know.. ridiculous but as I mentioned our "law men" are overly eager to try and lock people up!...It's looking more and more like I might not get out again this season because of my work schedule and it's killing me...but.. back to the happy thoughts though!... all I have to do is scroll up and look a your pics of the fat ass handful of Libs and I feel better!... Good Luck Hunting everyone and keep posting!

We used to tell farmers we were doing class projects on soil compositions and plant life etc.... they were generally pretty helpful... On occasion I've had farmers walk me to particular areas and point out "shrooms"... one guy was like 86 years old and said he had to stop "tripping" when he turned 75 because the doctor said it wasn't good with his pacemaker! lmao... Then he lit up a joint and said "If you guys wanna collect them fill your boots!" then he passed the joint!... classic shit... I'm gonna have to make a road trip back to PEI some time, I really hope he's still around! he was awsome!

haha thats wicked.safe fields are the best fields.permission is cool.

ya i sometimes use wax paper or a dehydrator.i see more and more people using dehydrators.i have been using them for a long time, quick and easy way to dry em. they dont effect the potency at all. last week i felt the effects of just 5 small semis dried in a dehydrator. just 5 small ones!

Yeah the old guy was awesome.. I wish I had a cam back then!... he would have made a good subject for some cool pics!
I haven't actually tried a dehydrator... might be an idea for next year, though mine seem to air dry rather quickly anyway, but if I can get one cheap it's worth a try!...
Yeah I know people now who do 5 or 10 libs when the get a buzz... We were outta control when we were younger.. That and mis-informed!.. People home say to "only" (Not Recomended) take 50 your first time lmao!... like a moron I took 100 caps in school!.. at least an 8 hr trip and one of the only times I've hallucinated off anything!.. I had visual and auditory and like I mentioned,, IN SCHOOL!.. Definitely a bone head move but I lived and learned... better than not living like some of the misinformed or uninformed users of various drugs today!...The only other INSANE trip that I had Besides the one in school was another trip on Libs where we made a tea with 600 caps.. there were 4 of us in the hull of a boat with 2 tea pots brewing! We would each down a cup of tea inhale a hot knife of hash and continue repeating until it was gone... VERY STUPID AS WELL!.. My heart clinched up on me and I passed out.. I shit you not I had an out of body experience where I could see myself lying there in the bushes but I was all swirly colors like a gasoline spill .. my friend was standing on my hand looking for me but I couldn't speak.. then my heart clinched again and I woke up completely sober and normal (but pissed everyone else was high and I wasn't)... God I was a moron then!.. now I consider, for myself, 10-20 caps as a perfect buzz.. jeezz I rambled again and this isn't really the rite place for a trip report but... tada lol.... Good luck hunting everyone and keep posting those libs.. sorry I get sidetracked lmao!

I have a hard time letting go of a so-so field so I can only imagine!... you'll have plenty of other places though... good luck with them and keep posting lol... at this rate you'll be at 1000 posts in no time lol

yea i know i cant help it :crazy2:

It pisses me off so much that i cant walk on the field..... because at the end of the day that's all im doing walking and picking.... no harm what so ever

I have a few other places already but they don't fruit as many and as big and unfortunately i think they are still privately owned land

Wow.. again nice clusters & patches! I don't know much about Strictipes but I'm gonna research them when I finish typing this!.. If you're pics aren't them, and are in fact libs, then they are by far one of the most peculiar but awesome strains I've seen. The specimens in the 4th and 5th pictures look a lot like some ones I saw in a field this year.. they were amongst more typical (for here) looking libs and I really was debating whether they were libs or not... I left them because when in doubt lol! I'm wondering now if they were perhaps Strictipes! I gotta do some research... thanks a ton for the awesome photo documentation Psylosymon and good luck hunting!

It snowed today for the first time this year here. not much, it was mostly rain.
should I give up looking or should I try a few more times?
I'm not sure how much cold libs can take.

they seem like such happy little shromes

Not sure if I remember correct Envix (and it's late) but... you haven't ever picked Libs yet right?..
your biggest worry is the ground "hardening" up I think... it's usually a good sign the seasons done "here"! (that and an amount of snow, of course) Again I'll say that I'm no expert... so you can do whatever you think! If you wanna keep looking, it's all you!... I still think you would benefit immensely from having someone, who's hunted your area, show you around! Good luck!

snowed eh? shitty for you, were getting 50-75 mm of rain tonight!!haha

thanks liberty king, these were some serious nice clusters.I may throw in one of these with my others for workman.alhtough these look different to what i thought were strictipes, they dont look like clasic liberty bells either . gonna hit this spot in the morning if i dont go pine hunting, i literally only picked for a half hour.

Yeah...lol It was a monster!... when I saw him, he was leaned over on an angle because the weight of his enormous "Umbrella" like cap! It grew out way more on one side, compared to the other... I got a couple field pics of him but the quality is shit... I might try and clean them up a little and post them later... (Now that my season's over I'm clinging to whatever pics I can post)

ya i should get some tommorow .i went pine mushrooms hunting yesterday,so my fields have had some days off to flush once again! i still havent gone back to that one field i hit the other day with those huge ones! i covered so little ground that evening.but area is also a fishing spot, and i dont want any fishermen spotting me picking while theyre walking by the field .like i said before this field was picked first by me,and thats half way through the season. so its really really loaded.i dont want to heat it out to anyone! know what i mean.

Yip 100%... I'd do the same thing... Hunting & picking strategy were where I finally learned some patience!... I'm an impatient Mofo in general, but If you're in it for the long haul you must be patient and intelligent. Discipline has always been one of my best assets for picking... No matter how spectacular an area you encounter never risk "heating" it up and potentially ruining it... Play it smart and you play it well!... and as always, Good luck Hunting!

Yeah.. I'm no expert but, not Libs!... If you go looking for Libs you should really know what Libs look like!... In depth research or the aide of an experienced hunter would be of benefit!....This thread is more for people posting their Lib info and pics from this season... Posting it to be identified, and following the criteria needed to do so will get you much better answers from qualified experts... they will be able to inform you better on what you pick.... Good luck!

well those grow in the same fields usually. where you are at it should be some excellent picking. do a little research before you head out so the image of a real lib is in your head or bring a picture.

as lib king said just make a thread for id purposes, and when you find some real ones then post em here.

made a new find today. i was taking my dog for a walk and actually looking for cyans. its some freshly disturbed habitat . a new trail around some ponds for salmon rearing. there is alders and black berries on the edge of the trail. the whole creek and pond is surounded by this wild grass. well i turn a corner and theres just 2 libs standing tall in the sun.
i cant recall finding libs in this kind of grass before. its all very natural, there has never been any grazing cattle in here ever! i pick alot in ungrazed fields, but usually at least sometime in a farmers fields history it has had some kind of live stock. this has not ,it opens up a huge new area for me and should serve as inspiration for those new to hunting libs and that dont want to hop into some farmers field. tall grass around the low end of creeks is worth a shot.
it was a sunny day and other dog walkers were there so i didnt have a chance to look very thouroughly. but i will go back.

yeah... a new post! lol that's awesome Psylosymon !  I've always picked in "regular" grass... we don't really have any farms... we're more fishing oriented!... Graveyards, Sports Fields, Parks and new sod are our best locations.... I've found that "Grazing" Fields (Pastures) do produce much better numbers (Yields), probably simply because of better nourishment.... Our normal grass Libs seem to grow more separated, and in smaller groups... None the less I do find they are often very healthy looking, typical specimens!.... Good luck hunting and I hope this opens up all kinds of new areas for you!... If you haven't already you should check out my journal... it shows some of my better areas!

i usually pick in fields where cows were present for a short time some other time in the year then fall.because the shit is there, but it isnt fresh. if youve picked a field that was just grazed you will notice there isnt shit but shit! some of my good fields are hay fields.they are super short and easy.actually i hit one today and did prettty good despite the fact the snowline on the mountain is super low and it hailed all fuckin day.still got some fresh fatties.i didnt have mt camera though.

the grass around this creek though is very common and i have always either over looked or looked in it in my younger years and wrote it off as no good.it is way different than my normal kinda "turf". but with a year like this, mushrooms are everywhere!

wtf i'll try this again.cyans got to me.

now drool time, look at this late in the year monster from a few days ago.how the fuck did this momma not get spotted and get to grow to full potential like this! this field is picked regularly by a few others too.

and here is a pic a lone semi from my flatty field. not sure if you saw that thread on "flatties".but the flatty is on the left obviously for comparison with a true sturdy classic liberty cap.

lol yeah I found one monster cap my last hunt of the season, also in an area that is regularly picked!... I think some people think they are so big they can't be Libs lol... I've been doing some comparisons with Lib shapes etc. "Flatties" are pretty interesting... I tend to get quite a few of them in a season... I'm going to check out your thread now!.. Thanks for the pics!.... As for growing I've always been a hunter, Libs would be a challenge for sure... probably not something one should take on for an initial attempt though!... I've followed Workman, CaptainFuture & 13Shrooms closely and find it all super fascinating! I think maybe it's better left to the pros for now.... maybe someday! :mushroom2:

Yeah..."Down Home"... in the Styx we used to get them right up until just before December... I'm sure maybe where I live now there may be some November spots still... But my best spots dried up in October :crymeariver:... It's too bad because my first find was the last day of September... One month just isn't enough... It should be 1 month off, 11 months for Libs!... though maybe that would cause problems in my work & personal life... lol what with my "Addiction" and all

Yeah Psylosymon... We have been getting awesome spring like days lately... Each morning when I get up though there is snow-like frost on everything and the ground is very hard... I have to wear a tuque out in the morning and by lunch I don't even need a sweater... It's typical Scotian weather lol you never know WTF to wear!... The mild weather after that one snow fall did have me optimistic too, but I went out and my best spot didn't have a single sign.... Still I plan on re-checking this week.... As you know I have trouble "letting Go"  :hissyfit:

Mmmmm my precious..... lol.... That grass looks just like the stuff I was finding my little "mutant" libs in...It's got the same, yellowish & Brown, decaying grass with new "shoots" of green here and there...My grass was cut super short though and was very tightly cropped, so the Libs came up "spiraled" and "pigmy"... It's cool to see that when the grass is moderately higher so are the Libs!...I love how they "adapt" to the environment they're in...
I really should have taken more, side by side, comparison shots this year...Next year I wanna put a "Typical" Lib, one of my "mutants" and one of the long stem, tall grass specimens together!... It's tricky because one dries up while I'm out hunting the other... I guess I'll just take "Mug Shots" of each one and photo-shop them together!
lol... Everyone I know has moved "West"... and there's really nothing here in the East, but still I stay....realizing that "you guys" are still in season though  lol it tempts me!.... Thanks for the great pics Psylosymon... they calm the craving!

haha good to hear. and no probs,i took them for this thread.

ya they definely change with the different grass sizes eh.give them a little bit of cover from the elements and from pickers and they can get pretty big. i love the short grass though, super tall grass is so much harder and i hate fuckin grass cuts!

ya there is lots of reasons to come out west. most of you east coasters stay in alberta though.better jobs, but a lame ass lifstyle compared to BC.
