I completely agree with dgonzo's comment, but since I'm a "beginner" in smoking weed, i would go with smoking in the middle of a trip - it was great every time for me. More experienced smokers may go with smoking before or after a trip (or may even agree with me  ) , but I always liked smoking right in the middle - it intensifies the trip a little bit, especially when you feel like the trip's ending  , and, like the previous post said, makes you a little bit more loopy
But go with whatever you're more comfortable with; that's what's most important thing when tripping - being comfortable in your surroundings.
