yeah i think that's one of the patches I've come across. but hell no it ain't mine. I'm sure that patch is "owned" by many many people. If it is the one I'm thinking of, it is on a hill overlooking a parking lot of a major attraction. A trail leads to it.
edit: oh and the "trail" is no longer a "trail".

I didn't pull up ANY wood chips with those. I wanted to get a few stem butts to make cardboard spawn. The stuff stuck on the stem is just dirt, grass and pine needles.
@ jet. def not the same patch, no parking lots here.

Is it still too early to see these popping up around the Bay Area? I did a tiny bit of hunting at a local park but found not one mushroom. Am I wasting my time if there hasn't been any rain recently? I'm not even necessarily looking for active species, just... ANYTHING.

Any time you go out and look for mushrooms, it's never a "waste" of time. It will always give you more insight into the world of fungi. The first active I found was after a dry streak of about 2 weeks. But anyway, keep looking. If anything, you'll find really good habitat for what you're after. That way when the season really starts up, you'll know a few good areas to look.

Okay guys, that sounds great. I don't think my spot was ideal anyway, although I've heard reports of mushrooms growing there. It's a pretty steep hill. There are still plenty of other places to check nearby, though, and I'll probably end up biking out to another tomorrow with my backpack. The last (and first) time I went I still had a blast climbing and exploring, so I'm looking forward to just getting out there.

hey, those don't grow in the PNW... you talking cope cyans? or Ps. cyan? Where you stay? i stay hawaii these days where pans and copes run rampant... i miss the variety of the PNW right now though, of both edibles and psychs...

those don't look like Ps. cyan to me... something very closely related for sure. the caps look a little meatier, they don't seem to have as wavy of a margin and i've never seen a cyan with veil remnants on the cap, even on super tiny ones... old pics here, and flash kind of washed out colors, but you an see what i mean though, these are little cyans... and a biggun

don't be too sure about anything just from your own experience. try to think outside your box. and not to be contradictory, but in my expierience Psilocybe cyanesens can vary quite a bit in appearence, depending on their genes, i suppose. I'd wager that Twistedsage's cyans are what he says they are. Not Copelandia. those don't grow here (Washington State)
