comics/graphic novels
    #11135555 - 09/27/09 03:19 AM (2 years, 4 months ago)

give me some greats.  preferably comic series.  also preferably not marvel/DC superheros.

i have so far read the watchmen, sandman, transmetropolitan (fucking loved it), zombieworld, some of fables, and am about 8 issues into 100 bullets.

if you have read 100 bullets, i'd totally recommend it.  basic premise is someone has been severely wronged at some point in their life.  after their life is ruined, they are approached by a man in a suit who offers them a briefcase filled with the evidence of who wronged them, along with an untraceable gun + 100 bullets, as well as a position above the law should they be inclined to carry out the vendetta.  it's pulp in that every couple of issues it's a new story, a new person.  and it's fucking awesome. download

offer up some recommendations.

You could try the Invisibles by Grant Morrison. (Parts of which were shamelessly ripped off in the Matrix)
Also, very different but really good, the Nikopol trilogy by Enki Bilal. (I simply love Bilal's artwork.)

Both are infused with occult imagery (the first is soo'90s that it seems to come straight out of the pipe of Terence McKenna, the latter has Egyptian gods visiting Earth in a Pyramid like spaceship and Horus in a starring role.) Great fun if you're into that sort of thing.

i've already done alan moore and neil gaiman.  in fact, i've read all of gaiman's novels as well.  i said in the OP i've read watchmen and sandman, though i could have also included league of extraordinary gentleman, from hell, some of swamp thing, neverwhere, stardust, endless nights, and probably various other works by those two.

i've read those guys' works plenty.  i'm looking for something new.

btw.  if you're a comic fan and haven't read 100 bullets, i highly recommend it.  i'm at like issue 11 now.  it's just getting better and better.  the dload link i provided has a list of zip files containing 10 issues each.  so you can just dload the first 10 to see if you dig it.

I'm currently reading Sandman.  My local library has them all!  So I've just been checking them out one by one.  I'm almost done.  It is so drool worthy.

Muas by Spieglman is really good.

I'd also recommend The Walking Dead for great zombie fun.  I've only read the first one of those though.

Anything by Frank Miller is worth a read.  Check out The Dark Night Returns, and Year One for awesome Batman stuff.  There's also 300 and Ronin as well as The Spirit and Sin City, but I haven't read either of those last two so I can't vouch for them.

I'd also read Bone by Jeff Smith if you've never done so.  It's a great read.

Also Scott Mccloud's Understanding Comics is good read too.

I'll check out 100 bullets

i've read maus.  as well as 300 and several of the sin city tales (before the movies too, so i wasn't quite so jaded going in).  i feel like i may have started the dark night returns, but didn't finish it.  during college, when i had a break between classes i would often get lunch and eat it in the book shop while reading graphic novels/comics.  good times.

i think i've had enough of frank miller, though maybe i'll check out ronin anyways.  the walking dead was actually already on my to-read list, as i just finished zombieworld and i can't enough me some zombs.  i'll look into bone, see if i can find a dload for it.  thanks.

Preacher (Awesome story that's very blasphemous"

Unfortunately, there is no better series than Sandman.

As someone said above, Preacher is a classic

For a stranger graphic novel check out City of Glass, its based on the Paul Auster book and is excellent.

Starman (this version http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starman_(Jack_Knight) ) is generally considered a great series and is highly ranked.

Y the Last Man is also up there ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Y_the_last_man )

And for the more serious (i.e less superhero fare) Time has its own list which is highly debatable Id say.  However some of them on there are excellent
http://www.time.com/time/2005/100books/0,24459,graphic_novels,00.html

If you want something much much weirder check out Tank Girl

those look like some promising recommendations.  hell yeah.

and Y the last man is another series i forgot to list among my have-reads.  i really enjoyed that one.  in fact, it was one of the first that got me into comics.  i started reading it just a few years back, right before the last few issues came out.  love me some apocalyptic fiction.

Constantine is the bomb, too.
I've read a tonne of them from a torrent I dl'ed awhile ago. I really enjoyed the movie, so when I found that it was based on a comic, I had to check it out. there are a load of different artists and writers who have worked on it, so every issue is a treat (although there were a few misses in my opinion).

also, thumbs up for walking dead.

the walking dead?  hell yeah dude,  i read a shit ton of issues last night.  i realized that i had actually started the series before, a couple years back.  only made it through the first 5 issues or so because that's all they had in the bookshop where i'd eat lunch.

after last night, i'm up to about #20.  and i'm pretty sure i actually  had a dream about the characters last night.  though i can't remember the specifics.  but i do remember waking up and thinking, "sweet, i totally just had a dream about that."

Yeah, the Invisibles is chaos magick themed, that's pretty nineties. lol. I actually saw the movie based on the Nikopol trilogy. Immortal. I'm sure the comic is better than the movie. ;p

And what's wrong with the nineties? I quite enjoyed them myself. ;p

ANYTHING by Grant Morrison - esp if you are a member of the Shroomery (BIG LSD , DMT fan) .  VERY VERY smart and way out there guy. He is the closest thing to a rock star in the comics world.

Right now RUN, don't walk, RUN and get the Invisibles.  In interviews he's talked about how he was dropping acid and practicing freaky sex rituals the whole time he was writing it.  He had to take a break for a while b/c he had a mini "nervous breakdown".  Its conspiracy theory + the occult + psychedelics + sex + violence + philosophy.

That series changed the way I looked at comics forever.

I bought the whole series for my brother recently. I CAN NOT recommend it enough.  If you don't like it feel free to ratings rape me weekly.

He also wrote a series called "The Filth" which was great. His take on "Doom Patrol"  is very trippy as well.  They will all make you think. REALLY think.

"Y  - The Last Man" is also spectacular. Beleive they are making a movie of it..."something" kills every man on earth save one.  Great art, great storyline. Unfortunately not as much fucking as would have hoped - but a well told story.

Oh ...and all the Freak Brothers are now collected in 2 volumes.  Go get those - ALWAYS entertaining.

Oh and check out "The Alcoholic" a one shot GN just released in TPB Autobiographical,  from the writer of "Bored to Death", a little overwrought though.

I'm currently  getting back into comics after 25 years.  I'm fully embracing my nerdom (had been fighting it for years). I stumbled across some listings on Ebay where I discovered that if you just wait a bit you can buy all the comics from your childhood in large lots, in great condition at a FRACTION of the cover price.  I usually shoot for 50 cents a copy.  That lead me to current runs and to graphic novels.

Amazon has a great selection of graphic novels at their usual discount - no need to pay full smash at the comic store unless you want to support them - I go back and forth.

Yeah, Doom Patrol was very cool. Don't think I ever read the Filth. I'll have to pull it down.

I actually own the hardcover of arkam aylum. lol. From back in the earlies nineties.

I will definitely check out Exterminators, looks cool.

Nikopol Trilogy is good btw. Much better than the movie spinoff.

*anybody else accidentally read from right to left? Lol manga.

i don't care if this is over a month old.  i'm bumping it.

this is a bump first to provide links to the full series of Preacher.  i'm about 10 issues in and loving it.

Issues 1-20
Issues 21-40
Issues 41-60
Issues 61-66

also, Scalped, which is totally badass.  it's still running.  think it's up to issue 30, but here's 1-20
Issues 1-11
Issues 12-20

and finally, new suggestions are totally welcome.

Grant Morrison's  The Invisibles is totally in line w/ (and possibly my favorite) Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, and Warren Ellis... Fuckin' brilliant story.  Pick it up, you won't regret it.

Amazingly, my library had Blankets, and I checked it out a month ago or so.

It was good.  I recommend it to anybody who likes graphic literature.

I'm REALLY trying to like the Invisibles, but it just seems like Burnt out Acid writing. I have no idea what is going on in this story.

yeah, i've actually read blankets as well.  it was recommended to me by a friend a couple years back.  i rather enjoyed it, even if it was a bit "cute".

the same friend actually gave me another piece by craig thomas before i left the states.  it's like a small illustrated diary of his travels promoting a book or something.  he's a talented artist, so it made for an interesting time-waster while on the plane.  hopefully i'll be able to bookswap it, should i come across a bookswap.

Since I don't think anyone has mentioned, for fun, Jhonen Vasquez's Johnny The Homicidal Maniac and Squee would be great additions to anyone's collection.

Those rapidshare files will only let me download them if I am a member. Weird.

I can find other sources I suppose.

Akira is meant to be a masterpiece. Apparently its far more detailed and in depth than the movie.

comic book readers are hard on my eyes and i can only read for short durations... nonetheless, it's an awfully tempting way to go about it... has anyone tried comic reader mobi for iphone?  $15... am wondering if it's worth the investment...

i don't really have any other option.  i'm in a tiny village in czech right now, so there aren't exactly any comic book shops around.  and even if there were, i'm traveling, so i wouldn't want the excess weight.

in regards to the iphone cbr reader, i don't have any experience.  but $15 seems awfully pricey for something that i'm like 90% sure exists for free out there.  there's got to be a free app for that.  also, if you can't find a free app, you can always use winrar or 7zip to unarchive the .cbr/.cbz files.  it would basically turn the .cbr/.cbz into a folder containing each of the pages as individual images.  so you should be able to view the whole comic on your iphone that way.

damn, that does look pretty fucking cool.  is that a proprietary comic reading format though?  i've been reading about these apps, and it seems most of them require that you dload comics directly from their own library (paying for each comic, of course).

also, after doing som reading, it appears trying to extract the image files of each page directly to the iphone doesn't work that well.  too difficult to read apparently.

nope

"Unlike other solutions, Comic Reader Mobi works on standard CBR,CBZ,RAR and ZIP files. No need for propreitary formats, or specially redesigned comics!"

which is why i'm considering it...  w/ others you have to convert to another format at the least.

Hound of the Baskervilles is recommended   I read it the other day and it really hit the spot.  A must for Sherlock Holmes fans.

I'm about 15 issues in and I have little idea about what's going on. I understand that the world itself is not real (much like the Matrix), but I don't understand the "liquid that it outside but comes from the inside".

I think Preacher and Sandman have ruined comics for me.
