Your puffballs look like Calvatia cyathiformis, same thing I found the other day. Don't worry there are no poisonous puffballs out there.

As long as It's an actual Puffball. Some puffballs even though are edible are pretty crappy edibles. I'd say if you were gonna cook it though peel all of the skin off and slice the actual mushroom up into individual slices and cook it with a dish. One good thing about puff balls is that they absorb flavors very well.

i was looking at a site that talked about spore mass colors for different species of Calvatia...how does one go about getting the spores of a puffball

The only way to get spores from a puffball is to find a mature specimen, by then they are not edible seeing the mushroom turns to the purple dust known as the spores.

Make sure to eat only young, firm puffballs that are all white on the inside.
Always make sure to slice the puffball vertically to make sure it isn't an Amanita button. If it is a button, it will have the shape of a mushroom inside the volva, and if it is a puffball it will be all white or all one color of spore mass, with a thin layer of flesh around it.
Happy Hunting!

Just watch out for Scleroderma citrinum when hunting for edible puffballs. It's easy to identify but without the proper experience it could be difficult.

Well, then it's inedible in any case. In my guides, it's listed as poisonous, but it is left unspecified in any more detail.

Quote:
The false puffballs all have a thick tough skin and are generally dark inside (the gleba) even from a young age. They are not severely poisonous, causing a somewhat unpleasant gastrointestinal upset. Fortunately most of them are small. less than 15 cm diameter. The tough skin and unpleasant flavor ensures that few people have been tempted to eat this fungus. The species shown here is probably Scleroderma citrinum, the poison pigskin puffball.
