would this help?  this is a map i've found that shows 20 counties where pine beetles are being predicatively trapped.  it's in pdf format but i figure since northgahunt's theory has worked for him it might work for others.  anyway, here's the link.  hope you guys have some use for it.

thanks for the info man.  i'm gonna put the pine beetle theory to work first thing tomorrow.  thankfully there has been alot of rain lately.  i know i'll find something eventually.

Hope it works out. Technically, I am not sure if pine beetle is the legitimate reason for the areas I am describing. This is just what I heard over the years. You should know what I am talking about, since you live in GA. Especially Paulding Cty.

I like this, wonder if one of the persons listed on the link could give us more specific areas. Tell them we are interested in documented how these beetle infect the area and the environment around them. Maybe they will give us a specific place to look.

Went to check another area of infested pines and had an interesting hunt. This looked to be a choice area, it was the largest of any I had searched and had piles of decaying debris. I searched for over two hours in an area about 20 yds wide and 200yds long and found absolutely nothing! I just figured this was a bad spot so I started to head back. Tracked backed the exact way I came in. Started looking amongst the edges of the uninfected areas of the woods under thick debris and tall grassy weeds, bam there they were. I couldn't believe it, I just searched this area with a fine tooth comb and found nothing.

The thicker the debris the more I found. It was so thick of dead branches and tall weeds that I couldn't get good pics. I was on my belly under piles of crap, could barley move and these things were growing all over. I actually stepped on some the first time thru, just didn't know they would grow under the debris. Especially where a tree had fallen over and the branches were embedded in the ground.

Anyways, just when I was about to give up, I found them. I still haven't figured out how one time they are growing in direct sun and the next they are so deep under the debris that you can not see them from above.

I would like to know how many days after rain is best to search for these. It seems, a lot were deep black and at there last stage of maturity. Some were huge.

Not really.  Even if he sold all these it probably wouldn't be enough to cover the lawyers fees when caught, and it certainly wouldn't make up for the prison time.

Unloading a ton of mushrooms in GA would probably bring some heat.

At least one member here got their door kicked down for selling some P. weilii to a "friend" who turned informant, they found a small amount of weilii and sent him to jail for a year.

Haha, "Probably" he says... :spank:

On a more positive note, I certainly hope you are spreading buckets of spore water into new places! You have an opportunity to be the bee, as it were.

Those are fantastic finds!  Excellent work.  Makes me sad that I don't live in the pacNW anymore.  The cyan and azure season always made fall so much fun.

They probably never figured that out.  When the search team finds a bag of dried mushrooms they run it through gc/ms, which tells them nothing about the species.
