Bulk Growing for Noobs

Introduction

This is a really simple guide if you want to grow a bulk amount of Psilocybe Cubensis. It comprises of using the PF TEK (v1, slightly modified) and spawning the mycelium to dehydrated manure. I wrote this guide because I see a lot of noobs that are confused about bulk substrates and how to use them to grow mushrooms. I also see a lot of you confused about casings.

When you spawn to bulk, you take a colonized sub, such as brown rice flour and verm, or Wild Bird Seed, and crumble it up and add it to more substrate such as manure, coir, straw, or coffee grounds. This results in getting more fruits (mushrooms). In this guide I use PF Tek, because it is easy, and cow manure because it is easy to find. There is no need for a glovebox or pressure cooker using this method. This TEK also does however detail using bird seed, which will require a pressure cooker for proper preparation.

Casing is when you take something that is not nutritious and layer it on top of your colonized substrate to give it more moisture and results in more fruits. This guide will use peat moss and vermiculite to do this. Even though some say verm is nutritious, it seems to make a good casing material. You don’t have to use a casing layer, so you can skip this step.

Temperature cannot be stressed enough during this whole procedure. You want to aim for at least 70 degrees during the colonization phase and for fruiting as well. If you keep your jars at 60-65 degrees you will experience stalled jars. Cubensis does much better if it’s at around 75 – 78 degrees. Jars will colonize in almost half the time it would take for jars stored at 65 degrees. The 10 degree difference will really impact your grow.

Materials for PF TEK

1/2 pint (8 oz) wide mouth or regular mouth jelly jars
Brown rice flour (rye, WBS or yucca flour can be substituted)
Vermiculite-fine or medium (better IMO) grade
Big pot to boil (steam sterilize) jars
Small towel or Paper towels
Mixing bowl and spoon
Lysol spray, or any surface disinfectant
Oust spray or other air sanitizer
Masking tape / Micro pore tape (NOT Necessary with dry verm layer)
Alcohol (70%)
Spore syringe (will make 10 jars)

Procedure

1. Clean and sanitize your work area. Spray Lysol and oust in the air. Use antibacterial products and products with bleach if you can. Make 4 holes on top of jar. Use a nail to do this. Imagine drawing a square on the jar’s lid to fit inside the depressed circle in the center. The holes should be on the four corners, equidistant from each other. Close all windows in kitchen/work area.
2. Mix vermiculite and brown rice flour in mixing bowl. 1/4 cup Brown rice flour, 1/2 cup vermiculite, and a very little less than a 1/4 cup of water per jar.
3. Put pot on stove and put paper towels or a small towel on the bottom of the pot. Make sure you use 7-10 sheets of paper towels.
4. Load jars into pot so that only half of the pot if filled with jars, make sure you pack them together tight. Leave lids loose on jars, don’t screw them on, just leave them laying atop the jars. You can place shot glasses in between them if the are prone to fall over. Pour water into pot on side without jars so that the water goes a little less than a 1/4 way up the side of the jars. Load rest of jars into pot making sure water is no higher than 1/4 - less than 1/2 up the side of the jar.
5. Put burner on low heat until water starts to boil. Make sure it is a slow boil. Boil jars for 75-90 minutes. You can get away with one hour of boiling.
6. *This step is not necessary* While jars are boiling take masking tape (or micro pore tape) and tear 1 1/2 inches pieces. You need 4 x The number of jars you are using. If boiling 10 jars, cut 40 pieces of tape. Stick tape to outside edge of table you are working with.
7. When jars are done boiling, take them and place them on the table. Tighten the lids and put the tape over the holes (again - not necessary with dry verm layer). Allow jars to cool over night before injecting spores.

You can use a dry layer of verm at the top of the jars about a 1/2” thick to keep out contams. (Do this if you don't plan on using masking tape to cover the holes on the lid) Wipe the inside top 1/2” of the jar with alcohol to be even more safe.

Injecting spores

It’s good to do this in a small room with no windows open. You want still air. Spray down the area with your disinfectants. Take your syringe and put a flame at the needle until its red hot. Wait for it to cool then wipe it with alcohol. Lift the tape off of a hole and put the syringe into the jar. Squirt some solution (1/4 cc) down the inside of the jar. Repeat for each hole, wiping syringe in between holes. Cover the holes back up with masking tape.
Jars will take anywhere from 2 weeks to a month to colonize. You should see growth within the first week, usually after 3 or 4 days. Tape can be taken off the holes when colonization reaches 60-70%. At this time the jars should be flipped upside down until they finish colonizing. (NOT necessary and only included because it hasn't failed me yet) Mycelium should look white and cottony looking. At first it may appear grayish, so don’t clean out those jars just yet. We wait until the jars have fully colonized before moving to the next step.

You can fruit these cakes as they are if you don’t want to go any further. Just wait until they fully colonize, then dunk them underwater, roll them in vermiculite and throw them into an appropriate grow chamber. You take the cakes out (birth them) by slamming the jar onto the lid, or onto a book or table. You put them underwater (dunk) for 14-20 hours then take some oven sterilized verm (350 degrees F for a half hour or so, allow to cool) and roll your cakes in it so that the cakes are covered with verm.  A fruiting chamber can be made out of a see through Rubbermaid style storage bin. Holes must be made on all sides, ¼” in size and spread about 2.5 – 3.5 inches apart. Perlite must be spread on the bottom, about 3-5” is sufficient. You can soak the perlite in water before you place it in the chamber, or just not put holes in the bottom so that you can let an inch or so of water sit at the bottom of the perlite. CFL lighting should be used (fluorescents) in the daylight spectrum. 12 hours on, 12 hours off, or on all of the time if you’d like.

Spawning PF Cakes to bulk sub

Materials needed:

Large pot
Pillowcase
Meat thermometer (analog is fine)
Lysol and oust spray
Cleaning products
Manure (dehydrated – store brand is fine)
Gallon sized freezer bags
Trays and / or tubs
Duct tape and / or trash bags

Procedure

1. Take containers to be used and place duct tape around the base of the container going up as far as you would like the substrate depth to be.
2. Spray area down with disinfectants and close windows.
3. Take manure and make sure to shred it up nicely.
4. Throw manure into pillowcase and tie the end of it into a knot.
5. Put pot on stove on low heat and wait for the temperature of the water to reach 140 -160 degrees Fahrenheit. Only fill pot about half way with water.
6. Put pillowcase into pot and make sure to keep the whole thing submerged. You can throw another pot on top of the pillowcase to keep it under the water.
7. Pasteurize the mixture for 70-90 minutes. You can do an hour. You can go up to 170 degrees, but if you go over you might be alright. Just try to keep the temps in the acceptable range.
8. Take cakes and throw into freezer bag. Crush the cakes inside very finely, crumble them well.
9. When done pasteurizing, take pillowcase and dump it into the sink. Allow to cool, then squeeze out excess moisture until only a few drops are coming out.
10. Take crumbled up cakes and mix with manure into your container.
11. Cover containers with tin foil and set aside for 4-7 days
12. Introduce trays into fruiting conditions when mycelium is fully spread.

You want to use a 1:3 ratio of spawn to manure. So, if you're using 3 cakes you want to use 9 jars(cups) worth of manure. You can also use a little less, a 1:2 ratio. If using 3 cakes, mix in 6 cups of manure.

You can use coir instead of manure if you'd like to. Coir is great because it's easier to use than manure. You can find coir at any pet shop; it is used as reptile bedding. To prepare it, simply take your brick of coir and put it into a bucket. Be sure to clean the bucket before doing this. Boil some water on the stove for about 15 minutes then throw it into the bucket. Cover the bucket and use the coir the next day. As you use the coir, make sure to squeeze it so that it loses extra moisture. You want to bring it to field capacity. You will know that it is at field capacity when you squeeze the substrate and only a few drops come out.

If putting your spawn and sub into a monotub, be sure to make holes on the four walls. Make them a 1/4" and space them about 2 inches apart. You can also make 4 tiny holes side by side, move over a couple inches and make more holes. I like to make 2 or 3 rows of these holes on the walls of the tub. If using trays, you must place them into a suitable fruiting chamber.

Throughout the whole process you really shouldn't have to worry about the smell. I never had a problem. Smell is very minimal, not really noticeable. There will be a slight smell if you open a monotub, but nothing serious at all. It won't smell through, say, a closet or in another small space. You really can't smell it at all, even when pasteurizing.

Casing

Peat moss and vermiculite, mixed in a 1:1 ratio, makes a really good casing layer. The casing layer acts as a microclimate and adds moisture resulting in more mushrooms. In order to prepare it, you must pasteurize it. Just follow the steps in the Spawning PF Cakes to bulk sub section of this TEK, replacing manure for 50/50 mix. When done, allow mixture to cool and squeeze out excess moisture.

Take 50/50 mix and spread across of fully colonized bulk cake / tub. You want to lay down a 1/2" to an inch of the 50/50 mix on top of your tray / tub. After casing layer is laid down, it takes about 4-7 days for the mycelium to spread throughout it. At that point it can be thrown into a Fruiting Chamber.

You can also place a layer of 50/50 mix under your sub as well and obtain good results. This is not Neccessary.

Quick overview of TEK:  PFTEK -> Manure -> Casing Layer -> Outdoor Grow

Fruiting chamber concept

A fruiting chamber is where the mushrooms grow. You can make them out of clear Tupperware containers. You need to line the bottom with about 3-5” of perlite and add enough water to cover the bottom inch of the perlite. You must make holes on all sides, ¼” spaced about two inches apart. An overhead light source is also needed, a daylight CFL should be sufficient. The chamber will need 4-5 mistings daily, with a fine mist, and will need to be fanned at least twice a day. Mist then fan. The misting can be avoided with setting up and attaching a humidifier to the chamber. Be creative. Also fanning isn’t such a concern because of the holes, but should still be done.

Pictures:

You can use a florescent desk type lamp with the above tub, or one with a clear top.

If using bulk trays, use two under the bed type tupperware boxes with one flipped upside down and on top of the other to create a dub tub. You can now place those trays inside the FC. Make sure to drill holes into the top tub, for FAE, and line the bottom with at least 2-3" of moist perlite. Treat like any other shotgun FC.

Inside the fruiting chamber:

Drying your mushrooms

Mushrooms can be dried using damprid or any other desiccant. Make a chamber out of a tupperware container. Take chicken wire and cut and bend it so that it sits at the bottom like a raised shelf you can place the mushrooms on. Pour desiccant into bottom of chamber so that it sits beneath the wire. You can place your mushrooms in front of a fan for a day to speed up the process. Without a fan it takes about 3-4 days to get even the largest mushrooms cracker dry.

Pictures:

A dehydrator is the fastest and easiest way
to dry your mushrooms. Many are inexpensive.
IME it takes about 6 hours to get the mushrooms
dry. You can run it overnight and have cracker
dry mushrooms by the morning.

Outdoor growing

When you cakes / bulk cakes have flushed 3 times, you can take the mycellium and place it outside. You can also do this if your cakes contaminate. You can place them in a hole as deep as the substrate and cover with a 50/50 vermiculite/peat moss casing layer. Be sure to pasteurize the mixture. Water every 2 - 3 days for best results, and you'll get a couple more flushes for your work! You can also just throw the cakes atop soil and break them down with a shovel to crumble them, but you'll get smaller fruits. 70-75 degrees Fahrenheit is the best temperature to do this in.

Spore prints

You can take spore prints so you can make more syringes. My method does not require a glove box. One spore print can make 4 syringes.

Materials needed:

Small Tupperware container (not needed)
Paper towels or 2 clean towels
Aluminum Foil
Alcohol (70%)
Small knife
Shot glasses
Opened mushroom cap
Cleaning agents (Lysol spray, oust)
Masking Tape

Procedure

1. Clean work area / room. Spray air with air sanitizer and clean all surfaces you will be working on.
2. Take Tupperware container and make 8 small holes on the lid in the shape of a rectangle. Make 2 rows of 4 holes.
3. Take clean towel (or paper towel) and place at bottom of container
4. Take aluminum foil and cut into strips between 4” to 5” inches by 4” to 5” inches. You can do 5” by 5”. Fold foil in half, then unfold as to leave the crease in the middle of the foil.
5. Wipe surface of foil with alcohol and place at the bottom of the chamber.
6. Take mushroom and sterilized knife (wipe with the alcohol) and cut the cap off of the mushroom closest to the gills as you can.
7. Place mushroom cap on one half of the foil.
8. Take sterilized shot glass (use the alcohol) and cover the caps. Fold up a little piece of foil and stick it under the glass, as to have the glass tilt slightly so that air may enter. Put lid back on container.
9. Wait for about 2 – 3 days then open chamber to collect prints. Remove caps and shot glasses. Fold foil over the crease and fold back the sides a little so that only one end of the print is open.
10. Place print into desiccant chamber for 2 – 3 days. Remove print after that time and fold over the one remaining open side. Tape up spore print with masking tape so that no air can enter the print.

You can simply lay down paper towels on your bureau and make a printing station there. Just cover the shot glasses with paper towels and you’ll be good. This is what I do. Always be sure to spray down the area with disinfectants when taking prints.

Making Spore Syringes

Syringes can be made from prints. Once again, this method is very easy and anyone can do it. You can take these syringes and use them to continue the growing cycle. After your first grow you shouldn't have to spend any more money to buy spores.

Materials needed:

Syringes (10 ml syringes with 18 - 20 gauge needle)
Used syringes can be used from your first grow, so remember to save them! Just try to buy the widest (lowest gauge) needle you can find at a pharmacy. A 1/4 of a print can make a syringe, but you can use even less with good results. I've made up to 10+ syringes from a single print.

Small pot
Cleaning Supplies (oust / lysol spray)
Spore prints
Shot Glasses
Alcohol (70%)
Small blade or razor
Masking Tape

Procedure:

1. Spray down area with disinfectants, also remembering to clean surfaces.
2. Fill pot half way with water, then place on stove top.
3. Bring water to a boil and let water boil for at least 10 minutes, 15 is better.
4. Take syringe and draw up water to fill the syringe (you can turn the burner off) and squirt the water into the sink. Repeat this step one more time with syringe.
5. Fill up all syringes to be used with the very hot water again for the third, final time, and cap them and put them in a dark place in a ziplock bag.
6. Allow 4 - 8 hours to allow syringes to cool.
7. Take cooled syringe and squirt water into sterilized shotglass.
8. Open spore print and scrape 1/4 of the print into the shotglass.
9. Mix the water in the shotglass with the end of the needle, then use the syringe to draw up the water. Repeat steps 6 - 9 for every syringe you make. You can use the same shotglass, but wipe it down with alcohol after making each syringe.
10. Cap syringes, tape the contact points with masking tape, and set aside in ziplock bag. Let spores syringes sit for 12 - 24 hours after making them to allow for the rehydration of spores.

Migrating from PF TEK to "true" bulk

You can use many of the materials you've acquired from completing the PF TEK to grow cubensis on WBS (wild bird seed). You can find this bird seed at any store like walmart or k-mart. You will also need to spawn the colonized seed to a bulk substrate such as coco coir to attain best results. You will acquire more fruits with this method of growing.

Before loading jars with seed, make sure the seed is nice and moist and (almost) rolls right off of your hands when you handle it. It is normal to see water droplets within the jars, this is fine.

If preparing lids for new quarts, make 3 good sized holes for gas exchange on one side of the lid, and a smaller hole on the other side for inoculation. When putting on the lid, be sure to not screw it on too tightly to prevent you from having trouble opening your jars when they have finished colonizing. If you do have trouble, you can buy a jar opener that will grip the lid and make it easier to open. Tyvek is placed under the lid.

Seed must then be spawned (mixed with) to coir. This can be done in a large, clear tub. The total sub depth should be no more than 4 inches. 2 holes should be made on the short sides of the tub (1 hole on each side) about 1-2" in diameter; 8 holes must be made on the longer sider (4 holes on each side) about the same size (maybe a little bigger). 2 holes should go 1-2" above substrate line and the other 2 should be placed near the top of the tub (on each long side). Space the holes apart.

Holes must be covered with tape after preparing the tub. Remove the tape when the tub is ready for fruiting and stuff the holes with polyfill. This can be acquired at a store such as Michaels that specializes in crafts. The tub should provide good humidity throughout it's life cycle. I like to fan a couple times a day. Mist if necessary.

Necessary Materials:

Micro pore tape (can be purchased at a pharmacy)
Tyvek Envelopes (can be found at post office or fedex self service mail boxes.)
Half pint or quart wide mouth canning jars
Drill or nail
Wild bird seed
Pressure cooker (8 qt pressure cookers can do up to 3 quart jars  or 8 half pints and are cheap)
Colander (strainer)
Big pot (to simmer bird seed)
Stirring spoon
Large Trash bags
Aluminum foil

Procedure:

1. Take your WBS and put it into the colander and rinse it really well.
2. Place bird seed into large pot and fill it with water so that it goes 1 inch above the seed. Steep for about 10 - 12 hours. Remove the floating seeds then rinse the seed again.
3. Simmer the bird seed for about 30-40 minutes or so on medium heat making sure to stir the seed occasionally. Simmer it until it gets softer and absorbs more moisture.
4. Rinse your seed once again.
5. Take some trash bags and put them on your table or kitchen counter. Take the seed and spread it evenly on the trash bag.
6. Allow seed to air dry for about 30 minutes or so. You want the seeds filled with moisture but not too wet, this could cause a "sludge" to form on the bottom of your jars where the excess moisture could collect.
7. Take your half pints or quarts and fill them about 3/4 of the way up with the prepared bird seed.
8. Put tyvek over the mouth of the jars. You want to cut little squares so that the whole mouth is covered.
9. Take your pf tek style lid and put it over the tyvek, along with the band.
10. Cover jars with two layers of aluminum foil.
11. Load into PC
12. Put water into PC about 1/3 way up to jars height.
13. Fasten PC lid and put on high heat on a stove or range.
14. Allow pressure to build in the PC then put it on medium heat. PC for about 90 minutes.
15. Allow PC to cool and release pressure by itself and remove jars.
16. Wait one day, then inoculate. Use 1cc per half pint or 1.5cc per quart jar. Put micro pore tape over the hole where you inoculated. Shake jar well after inoculating.

Updates

After flame sterilizing spore syringe, DO NOT wipe it with alcohol.
This will only compromise your sterile procedure.

When preparing grain jars, make sure to put the lid
over the mouth of the jar, then apply the tyvek, and
finally secure the band over the tyvek. Tyvek under
the lid can actually become a breeding ground for bacteria,
due to moisture build up between the lid and the tyvek.

Other updates will be added over time with more experience,
and if I catch anything that needs updating.

Thank you very much for posting this, I was planning on doing cakes but after reading this decided to use this tek and it seems like it would be overall better. My one question is how much manure would you suggest per cake? Say I was going to put it in a large tray, how much manure should I put in per crumbled cake? Also how much yield would you roughly get per cake?

This is exactly the procedure I'm currently doing and it's going great.
Thanks for taking the time to type this out, I'm sure it will come in handy to a lot of members.
Next time you do this tek, consider photographing the steps. Visual aid is a big plus for teks, as you know, a picture is worth a thousand words!
You definitely deserve a rate for this one!

Thanks, guys, really appreciate the feedback. You want to use a 1:3 ratio of spawn to manure. So, if you're using 3 cakes you want to use 9 jars(cups) worth of manure. You can also use a little less, a 1:2 ratio. If using 3 cakes, mix in 6 cups of manure.

 I knew I forgot that part!

More to come, pictures soon. I'm glad I could help out the community.

Edit: Yield is roughly ~10 grams per cake (after spawning), but you should get even more if you keep up perfect conditions!

I know, I had to do some research and ask a few questions to learn about the spawning to bulk part of the process, I couldn't seem to find an all in one guide, just pasteurization TEKs. Glad I could help.

I hear ya, but people can use a monotub and it should keep up good conditions as long as the sub's water content is right. This is also geared more towards those with experience with only PF cakes.

I have a question how much does it smell once you start using manure?

Smell is very minimal, not really noticeable. There will be a slight smell if you open a monotub, but nothing serious at all.

Move out of your mama's house before you grow!

just kidding, but seriously, if you own your own place, you need a stealth grow.

Moonshine, again, great tek.
I am doing another small tub with this tek with a very slight variation. I used the Lazy Mofo Bag Tek (spawn colonized Pf jars to more PF sub to quickly produce more PF spawn) and will proceed to use the colonized BRF+Verm to spawn to coir+manure.
Not that you guys really want to hear about it
Although I might be posting pics of it as my first grow log!

It barely smells unless you got your face stuck to your cakes.
