PreparationH said: also, you understand that 97%(90 something it's 93 or 97) of american scientists are atheists? Why is this? Because they are blind and ignorant? Or how about if you look at the correlation between belief in god and intelligence? Guess what, apparently us atheists score an average of 10 points higher on IQ tests then you believers, but that's because we're ignorant. How about the FACT that children of religious people have a correlation that they are not as intelligent as those born of non-religious people? Your god likes to make his sheep stupid??
Looked into those numbers, and it seems you must either have them mistaken with something else, or your stats must be from a much larger study.
Here's the numbers I found:
Quote:
Detailed in the latest issue of the journal Social Problems, the study is based on a survey of 1,646 scientists at 21 elite research universities and in-depth interviews with 271 of the scientists. The survey contacted researchers specialising in physics, chemistry, biology, sociology, economics, political science, psychology and other fields.
The data revealed 52 percent of scientists surveyed had no religious affiliation, compared with only 14 percent of the general population. Of the religious scientists, however, 15 percent identified themselves as Jewish compared to 2 percent of the religious general population.
Here is the article I got that from.

either way though "No religious affiliation" doesn't have much to do with the fact that the believe in a god or not. Like the guy saying he believes in god, yet has no affiliations with a religion.

Aye, so wouldn't the no religious affiliation likely include those who believe in God and have no affiliation with a specific religion, thus suggesting that the number of atheists in that survey would be less than 52%?
Regardless, it's one study, and it is in a country (America) known for being more religious than many other Western nations. I'm by no means suggesting that most scientists are not atheists or agnostics, it just seemed like 93-97% seemed a little high for a country like the United States.

Nope, I'm not really sure what I'd look up. It definately makes sense that most children would have the same religion as their parents though, as most children initially think their parents are infallible and the kids don't really have an alternate worldview to look into.
Is that your point?

As the firstborn child in my family, I am completely fine with the idea of God allowing this.

To directly address the religious household lower IQ thing though, I would think that poorer households are more likely to be religious, and the poor would likely not do as well on IQ tests due to various things such as stress, poor nutrition etc. So I guess I'm shifting the blame from the religion to the lack of money.

I've had trouble finding good links for the relationship between IQ and what environment a child grew up in. I did find some about the overall relationship between IQ and religiousity though.
There are some graphs which show that countries or states that have a lower percentage of religious people have a higher average IQ. I'll relook up those in a minute and edit this post.
On wikipedia there was also the following:
Quote:
In 2008, intelligence researcher Helmuth Nyborg examined whether IQ relates to denomination and income, using representative data from the National Longitudinal Study of Youth, which includes intelligence tests on a representative selection of American youth, where they have also replied to questions about religious belief. His results, published in the scientific journal Intelligence demonstrated that on average, Atheists scored 1.95 IQ points higher than Agnostics, 3.82 points higher than Liberal persuasions, and 5.89 IQ points higher than Dogmatic persuasions. Atheists were third highest in the study overall, behind Jews and Anglicans. [4] "I'm not saying that believing in God makes you dumber. My hypothesis is that people with a low intelligence are more easily drawn toward religions, which give answers that are certain, while people with a high intelligence are more skeptical," says the professor. [5]
The relationship between countries' belief in a god and average Intelligence Quotient, measured by Lynn, Harvey & Nyborg.[6]Nyborg also co-authored a study with Richard Lynn, emeritus professor of psychology at the University of Ulster, which compared religious belief and average national IQs in 137 countries. [6] The study analysed the issue from several viewpoints. Firstly, using data from a U.S. study of 6,825 adolescents, the authors found that atheists scored 6 g-IQ points higher than those adhering to a religion.
Secondly, the authors investigated the link between religiosity and intelligence on a country level. Among the sample of 137 countries, only 23 (17%) had more than 20% of atheists, which constituted “virtually all the higher IQ countries.” The authors reported a correlation of 0.60 between atheism rates and level of intelligence, which is “highly statistically significant.” This portion of the study uses the same data set as Lynn's work IQ and the Wealth of Nations, which has drawn criticism of accuracy and accusations of statistical manipulation. See main article at IQ and the Wealth of Nations#Criticism
Commenting on the study in The Daily Telegraph, Lynn said "Why should fewer academics believe in God than the general population? I believe it is simply a matter of the IQ. Academics have higher IQs than the general population. Several Gallup poll studies of the general population have shown that those with higher IQs tend not to believe in God," [7]
Edit: graphs!
