My list would look pretty much identical to yours, except I would add Heart, The Youngbloods, Steppenwolf, and some of John Lennon's solo music.

I'm was with ya until I saw Motley Crue.

I can't stand hair-metal.

Add some Ahprodite's Child into that mix, and some Procol Harum, another great artist is Billy Squier.

The Sex Pistols, the Ramones, punk rock was an integral part of the 70s. Black Flag is another great band too.

I love 60s/70s music, popular and obscure stuff.  I'd recommend:

Can, Gong, Caravan, The Pretty Things, The Zombies, Hawkwind, The Byrds, Captain Beefheart, Amon Duul II, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, etc.  So many great bands that nobody really talks about.

Also shoegaze artists and similar, even though most were late 80s early 90s.
Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus & Mary Chain.
I also think of No Wave, but that's not actually good music.

Why?  Just because you might not like them?

and The Monks are indeed good.  Some of that other stuff is too, but not many people know of The Monks.

Why should every fan of rock listen to their first three albums? Because you like them?

Lighten up.

And yes, The Monks are very good and it's too bad more people don't/didn't know them.

I didn't mean to imply that.  I just mean that they're a really unique and influential band that people who like, tend to love.  Similar to The Beatles in that respect, it's just a good starting point to discovering a lot of other great music.

Great selections.

Funkadelic was an absolutely amazing group; their music spanned funk, psychedelia, gospel, and so on.  Maggot Brain, Standing on the Verge of Getting it On, and Free Your Mind and Your Ass Will follow are three of my favorite albums.  I believe George Clinton said the concept for Free Your Mind was to "cut a whole album while tripping on acid."

Frank Zappa, excellent.  Hot Rats is an amazing album.  I love his instrumental work.

Mahavishnu, also another great selection.

A great album is Lotus by Santana.  It was a concert he played in Japan in 1974, and I've never heard anyone play the guitar like he does in this concert.  Most of his songs are quite long and are instrumental, and it's really a beautiful album to listen to.

The amount of Grateful Dead in my collection is *rediculous*.  lol  Most of the stuff I have is from the early & mid 70's when they were at their peak.

I'm surprised nobody's brought-up Robin Trower.  Another psychedelic guitarist, like Hendrix only less in-your-face.

well if your into some angry shit- i would recommend-

black flag
minor threat
very early bad religion
negative approach
jerrys kids
germs
larm
circle jerks
death sentence
bad brains....not so angry

to name but a few of the outstanding punk hardcore bands of the early eighties.

who's existance i give thanks to the stooges, mc5, new york dolls, cops, dictators..... earlier bands that paved the way for angry enlightened music.
