I'm only on my first grow but I feel like you don't absolutely need to use a glovebox.

You don't absolutely need to, but why wouldn't you? They're dead easy to make and can be made for ultra cheap. So why not do it and help eliminate potential problems?

Because it's just one more piece of junk lying around my apartment. Yeah I understand it's cheap and easy to make and I will probably make one eventually but with my current living situation space is a valuable commodity and I'm sure it is for other people too.

We all have priorities. I used a closet once setup a nice little lab trouble was all the shit that was in there ended up in the bedroom that pissed off the GF then I ended up dumping her as she was getting in the way of my sterile culture technique! Ya I got priorities too!!!

Re: always getting contamed??? [Re: stveo77]

I would assess your continual contaminations thusly:

On the top end of the hierarchy, the spores; dirty spores will give you contams regardless of how clean your procedures are.

Next, your jars/substrate. It is essential to properly sterilize the contents of your jars.. skimp on this, and you will get recurring contams. Your substrate is going to be in an environment that promotes microorganisms to grow. This could be your spores.. could be something else in the jar..

Next, inoculation procedures and your surrounding environment. If you have poor technique or are working in an unclean environment, this increases your chances for failure.

It is likely that you have mold in your area (possibly in your carpet if you have one, or curtains.. clothes.. any sort of cloth), and it you keep getting contamination, it is likely that your spores are carrying the contam.

You could test your environment by creating a test BRF jar, but instead of inoculating it with a spore solution (if you use that), inject it with sterilized water.  This tests your technique and sterility of your jars.  If you let it sit, and you get contams (probably around a week later) then you know that its your environment/technique. If you don't, then its probably your spores.

Very good point, a few hours ago I realized that I already have something sitting around that I think I will turn into a glovebox!
