More edible Suillus (?) and some other bolete
    #10526003 - 06/17/09 06:25 PM (2 years, 11 months ago)

Howdy, all.  I think I found some dinner today, but I'm not yet convinced.  Please lend your opinions on what I may have here.

These were both found today in the eastern Sierra at about 7500-8000'.

1) These were all in the middle hump of a barely used two track road which borders a meadow and a lodgepole pine forest.  There were also many aspen and rose bushes around.  In many ways it reminds me of this bolete that I found one week ago in a similar habitat, which was identified as a Suillus by Alan.  The differences being that the other one was much bigger, had fully breached the duff layer, and was solitary.  These were just barely jutting out of the duff, and were in groups of about a half dozen.  The similarities are; viscid cap with lots of crap stuck to it, no bruising, rusty brown spore print, yellow pore surface, short stout stem with no reticulation, stems have some traces of rusty brown spores on them.

2) These were a little funkier, and I'm pretty leery of them.  These did bruise blue/brown on the pores a little, and more obviously blue on the stem when cut.  They were all right on the bank of a little crick right where there was a mini-waterfall which was continually spraying the area where these were growing.  The plants around were dripping wet, and these caps were viscid, and there was moss in this spot, too.  Hmmm, what else?  I don't have a spore print yet, so I'll be sure to post that in a while.

Thanks for your time.  I found a couple of other interesting ones today, but I'll post those later.  Now I'm hungry and want to eat 1) above.

Cheers!

Those are both Suillus.

The first ones are similar to S. brevipes, and the others look like S. tomentosus. Both species are edible.

Happy mushrooming!

Thanks, toxicman.

I ate Suillus 1) above, as I had more of those and was nearly sure of their safety before anyone responded here.  They were quite yummy, but took a little bit of extra prep time because of peeling the cuticles.  I was trying to print 2), but by the next day (when I saw your reply) they hadn't dropped hardly any spores and one of them was already rotting nicely, so I chucked 'em in my yard and gave thanks to the shroom-god.

Thanks again.

Re: More edible Suillus (?) - EDIBILITY UPDATE [Re: Alan Rockefeller]

Well, I did enjoy those mushrooms, but I'm not convinced of their edibility.  After eating the batch shown above, I noted some wheezing, which is rare for me.  I thought it could have been the mushrooms, but didn't really think much of it.

Five days later, I found these:

It seemed very obvious to me that they were the same thing that I had found five days earlier in a very similar habitat.  I didn't take the best identifying pictures, because I was so convinced that they were the same thing.  I ate all of them that I gathered that didn't have maggots in them.  Oh, and I didn't eat those two really big ones in the last picture.  I had eaten probably about a dozen or so (rough guess - one pound or more?) of these mushrooms.  I sauted them and I also threw in some leftover veggies which were left on the counter overnight.  This time I left the mushrooms in bigger chunks, and didn't overcook them like I had done the last time.  About an hour after eating them, I started wheezing again, so I'm pretty convinced that this effect is brought on by these Suillus.  Also, after about two hours or more, I felt a little nauseous.  I had one giant stomach emptying vomitus (of the mushrooms and veggies) and then felt super after that.  Although I can't say for certain that the vomiting was from the mushrooms, I think it's very likely, and I can say that I'm not going to eat any more of these guys.

We eat those all the time, they are fine shrooms. You seem overly sensitive.

Try doing this: put shrooms in a pot of cold water, bring to a boil, turn off the heat and after less than a minute discard the water. Then fry or saute them.

The first boil usually gets rid of whatever toxin may be present. (pls NOTE: this method is for edibles that may give some people problems - this method will not work on truly poisonous mushrooms)

The other method is soaking the shrooms in warm/hot water, changing it often - this is a quick soak, works well on "poisonous" boletus subvelutipes: soak already sliced shrooms until most of the blue "ink" comes out. Then do the "boil and discard water" method, just in case. The resulting sauted shroom has golden flesh. Tastes delicious, especially caps. Stipes need longer cooking time.

All mushrooms are edible but some are edible only once. :mushroom2:

I would just like to clarify that I now think that 1) above is Suillus volcanalis.  The description is spot on, and the picture looks very much like them.  The first picture linked at the bottom of that page looks exactly like them.

I found some other Suillus-like beast today that got me thinking of these again and looking at more descriptions and pictures.  The one I found today was quite similar, but the major difference was that the pores instantly bruised dark blue/green.  I'll post an ID request for that one later today.

At any rate, I just thought I'd throw this in here for future reference.

Oh, and I'm not opposed to trying to eat them again after following the preparation method described above.  As always, I'll let you know if I puke.

Cheers!
