The Smell of...
    #10547954 - 06/21/09 01:26 PM (2 years, 11 months ago)

Holkay, I used
Perlite and http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10314422 for my substrate in 4 jars. That was the closest thing I was getting to complete it, no other alternatives where I live.

After adding the substrate, they were put in the PC for an hour after boiling started.
I followed all the sterilization steps.

Since I have 4 jars, I lifted up the aluminum foil on just one, and it had a, not so pleasing smell to it.
Its been only 1 day and 4 hours since inoculation, can a bacteria be forming already and causing it? Or, is it just the smell of the rye flour.

Shame on you all!
Do tell me what it does different, then I take it back.

I can't believe how some people come here asking for help, then bash the people who try to tell them what they've done wrong... seriously, do you want help, or do you want people to lie and tell you you've done everything right?

Seriously, RR's brf (pf) tech is almost foolproof when done correctly.  Watch the videos.

Well go ahead and be a little bitch about it if you want, but I tried to give you advice.  Here we go, get ready to take it back.  Not sure why I'm wasting my time.....  Vermiculite is like a sponge, it holds water.  Perlite is like a piece of coral, it holds tiny drops of water in it's surface and lets it evaporate.  What happens when you soak a sponge and let it sit out?  It stays wet and gets moldy.  If you were to do the same with a piece of coral, it would quickly evaporate that water off of all that surface area and dry out.  Maybe...just maybe...you're confusing the purpose of the two materials, because there is no version of the PFtek that says to sub perlite for vermiculite.  Find me a successful one, oh wait, there isn't.  I wasn't gonna bust on your choice of flour because mycelium DOES colonize rye and I see no reason why rye flour would be a problem, although the PF TEK says to use brown rice flour.  Now.  Shame on YOU for being a loud-mouth noob and spouting off without doing your research.  You're obviously kinda new, so why don't you sit back, shut your hole, and take some advice and learn something.  Oh, and misspelling 'guys' is not cute, or funny, and it's the same number of letters so what's the point?

Coral you say though, does it matter if it evaporates? There is something on top of the jar not letting air in or out.

Clearly in this vid Tek, you are not supposed to remove this aluminum foil until the myc is formed.

Ok, first of all, we use quotes to keep threads concise, so everyone knows who the response is to, because we might not always get to post directly below the person we're responding to, secondly, who said anything about anger?  No, you didn't hear wrong.  They tried to tell you not to use perlite, but you weren't listening.  Again, nobody said caps meant anger.  Caps are used for emphasis.  Now you are just being a jackass.  I've given out my noob handout for the day.  You'll go dump that crappy excuse for a PFTek you have that isn't colonizing, give up on this whole 'growing shrooms' business, and be another inactive account on here, and I'll give up helping noobs for another week or so and focus on helping and learning from some of the real members on here, and in another couple weeks, I'll decide to 'play nice' and answer another noobie question from some other dipshit who didn't bother to search or read the established teks, and the cycle will continue.  YAWN......

Vermiculite=sponge
Perlite=coral

Excellent comparisons.

Mataspore, what do you mean that "there's something on top of the jar not letting air out"?  Air exchange is critical for mycelial growth.

I really suggest you go back and re-read simple pf tek instructions; otherwise you're just wasting spores.  I can't understand where exactly you came up with your tek.  It makes no sense.

I realize you're probably anxious to get going, but it's extremely important to read everything multiple times before starting so as not to waste time and money.  You can find vermiculite in most gardening centers if not the big box home improvement stores.

Hang on a sec, some of us newbs are competent and study our teks thoroughly.  Some of us know a thing or two about manners as well.  Then again, those of us who study the shit out of a tek aren't gonna come asking why our jars smell funny even though we used all the wrong ingredients, so... carry on I suppose.

Allow me to backtrack slightly.  It's perfectly fine to be a newb.  Everyone was a newb at first.  What's important is that you:
A: Read the previous threads and educate yourself and not ask questions that have been answered over and over and over and over again.

B: Not be a smart-ass know-it-all when someone tries to help you out.

If you violate these 2 simple guidelines, then not only are you a noob, but you are also a lazy, dickhead newb, which will get you nowhere fast on these boards.  Now I may be guilty of being a little harsh at times, but at least I don't go around asking stupid questions that everyone is sick of answering and cluttering up the cult forum.  On a side note.  Daruma, that is one of the most excellent first posts I've ever seen someone make.  +5 shrooms to you brother!  :thumbup:

Thank you stealth.  Very kind.  I'd hit you back, but I need another 48 posts to do that.  At my rate, that'll take about 15 years :wink:

mata, after re-reading your initial post, I see that you still have the foil over the top of your jar.  Now, your jars are junk anyway (I'm sorry to say), but in the future, the foil can be removed after inoculation as its purpose is to prevent water droplets from entering the substrate during sterilization.

Ive came across 1 post using perlite as a substitute and the results wernt great. The problem with perlite is that it doesnt hold much water. Vermiculite holds 3 times its weight in water compared with perlite which only holds just over 1 times it weight in water (i thjink those are the right numbers).

While you may get growth and a fully colinised jar its not going to hold enough water.

Brown rice flour isnt the only flour that you can use in the pf tek. You can use other grain flours like rye wild bird seed etc but you must pressure cook. If you steam sterilised pf cakes with rye flour, thats probably why it stinks.

Brown rice flour (and i think rice bran aswell) are the only flour which can be steam sterilised.

If you cant get verm locally then ordered it. Its pretty difficult to get by without verm unless you go straight to bulk substrates. If you have a pressure cooker, you can do grains, but most grains wont fruit on there own or perform poorly if they do. Grains need to be cased or mixed with verm, both methods usually contain verm. So youd then be needing to spawn your grains to a bulk substrate and fruit it uncase.d

take off all the foil you need gas exchange! you do have micropore tape/another filter on the lids right?

if so i wouldnt worry about it. there is no reason it wont colonize your rye as long as you started with the right moisture content.

dont open the jars to smell it. since your have no verm you should make sure you dunk betweeen each flush.

also if it turns out post ur mature fruits on this thread it would be funny as shit.:rasta:
