    #10502912 - 06/14/09 03:40 AM (5 years, 3 months ago)

Hello =D

Just wondering what magic mushrooms grow in South Australia.

Ive been hunting and picking Subs for the past 2 years as i had been told they were the only ones found here.

but, i believe i recently came accross psilocybine cyanescens.

so basically, what active mushrooms can be found in Adelaide???

any help would be greatly appreciated =D

All psilocybes have a purple-brown spore print, it would be nearly impossible to differentiate the two species by looking at the spore print without a microscope.

This thread is > 7 months old and was necroed by the pretty incomprehensible post above yours, so don't hold your breath on an answer from the OP...

CAPS LOCK... turn it off. Sorry to tell you, but you have not found Psilocybe subaeruginosa. They do not grow in summer, they are a fall mushroom. They like it cool.

Hi all, Been a fair few years of research and first hand experience.

So, looks like ive finally found my answers... we have the following shrooms in S.A.

Psilocybe subaeruginosa

Psilocybe azurescens
Psilocybe Tasmaniana
Psilocybe australiana
Psilocybe eucalypta

These are just different names for subs. ^^^^

These apparently are also active.

Gymnopilus junonius
Gymnopilus purpuratus
Panaeolus fimicola
Amanita Muscaria

Ive always just collected Subs.... theres plenty about and theyve been great.

But... whats the general opinion on the rest??, how many people trip from gyms??

Is amanita worth it?.... if you have plenty of subs??

Thanks for all your help and feedback.

I thought it was fairly well known that whilst we have Gymnopilus junonius/spectabilis that grow here they are not active ones.
There are quite a few other posts about Gyms here in SA.

Psilocybe australiana and Psilocybe eucalypta are synonyms of Psilocybe subaeruginosa.
Psilocybe azurescens is a North American species. I don't think it occurs in SA.
I'm not aware of any reports of Psilocybe tasmaniana occuring in SA either.

Gymnopilus junonius is active in some parts of the world, but not Australia.
I'm not sure about the activity of Panaeolus fimicola. It's probably similarly active to Panaeolus cinctulus (which probably occurs in SA too).
Amanita muscaria is not active in the same sense as psilocybin mushrooms.

Thanks zed, i had a little look but not a good enough one i guess...

Thats pretty interesting about the gyms.. will have to look into why theyre not active in aus.... temperatures?

Is that the same for Gymnopilus purpuratus?

And yeah, im aware that muscaria has to be prepared correctly or it can be poisonous. No worries there, if thats the different trip your talking about??

Or just like comparing subs and cubes?, apples and oranges, whats your face?

and timmy t....unless the book i purchased has the wrong picture and description on Psilocybe azurescens, im very sure we have them here.

Theyre exactly like some of what ive been finding look like... will post pictures next time i encounter some and get a proper i.d.

Have you ever found pan firmicola?, or pan cinctulus?

Thankyou very much for your knowledge

Gymnopilus purpuratus is an active species.

Amanita muscaria is not comparable to a Psilocybe because it has different chemistry. The active constituents are muscimol/ ibotenic acid which are  dissociative rather than psychedelic (more like being drunk than tripping).

Which book says that Psilocybe azurescens occurs in Australia? I'm not aware of any no records of that species from Australia.
