Lets do this the right way. Post your Florida finds for 2009 HERE!
I'm from south Florida, as you Floridians know we have had a pretty dry year up until the last week or 2. My hunting partner and I were sitting around Saturday, with nothing to do. We decided to make a quick trip to our field to search for shroom activity. The rain hadn't completely soaked into the ground yet, there were large puddles all over the field, but dedicated shroom hunters like us didn't give a cow shit. After several minutes of searching we came across a few cubes, and that always feels good.

These are the first 2 cubes we came across. The bigger one weighing in at almost 6 grams dry. All together we harvested ~45 grams dried in 2 days. Hopefully ill have more pictures to post after this upcoming weekend
Now its your turn fl shroomers, show us what you got

Beautiful picture and nice intro!!! Nice way to kick off the Officially Official Florida Thread!
I have yet to get anything great since the recent rains...but I'll be out there this week at some point and will make up for it . These 2 pics are from April.

I think you can ride those things like horses but I am not really sure.
Enter, your mushroom is either a Suillus or a Boletus with large pores.

At first I thought it was a typical bolete. Now I looked up Suillus cothurnatus var. cothurnatus and believe it to be this. Oddly, two of the three had yellow foam-like undersides (under the cap) with pinkish tinted pores on the inside. One had about 85% white pores and the other 15% the normal yellow type. They weren't slimy.

The white pores are a fungus from the genus Hypomyces attacking your Suillus.

If they are staining blue they are Panaeolus cyanescens, however yours look more like the inactive Panaeolus antillarum to me.

Yes, for Panaeolus cyanescens.

there are couple types of active blueing Panaeolus mushrooms that grow in south Florida. and they need to be looked at under a microscope to properly identify them.
here's a few types of Copes: Cyanescens, Tropicalis, Cambodgeniensis, Chlorocystis, Bisporus.

So would it be accurate to say that there are about five species that look identical to one another macroscopically but are clearly different under a microscope Also the genus copelandia no longer applies and to call some of these copes is more of a term of endearment?

yeah, I don't normally use the term Copelandia, it confuses things.
but basically the term Copelandia simply means active blueing Panaeolus

Hey, well i'm new to this site. I live in Ocala, which is central florida, I've always had a sort of fascination with mushrooms, but i've never really known much about them. Me and my friends were just at some nature park and i would just look around for different types of mushrooms, i was wondering if anyone could identify what these might be?
This mushroom was found right next to a stump, it is exceptionally large, around 7-8 inches, it is very hard, and the stem is almost rootlike..i'm sort of convinced it is a root, the top is bright yellow with a white edge around it, and the stem is hard and purple and stick-like.

This mushroom was found in a wet woodland area, take note, it has been raining and over 95 degrees in the same day for the past 2 weeks. This one is bright yellow with a white stem, its around 4 inches in height.

This one used to have a yellow top, (im not sure what to call the top of the mushroom). but it has faded to white somehow since yesterday. It was found in the same area as the ones above. It has a very flat and wide top and a relatively short stem, its around 3-4 inches long as well.

This one is also found in the wooded area, it is very short and doesnt have those strange spore things underneath its head.

Last but not last, i found this one pretty strange. It was found in a pair of 3, one of them was larger than a potato, they are purple and slimy and hard.

Well, thats it for now.
If anyone can tell me anything about these mushrooms that would be amazing!
thanks =]
**edit The pictures are not working so to view them just go here, http://s688.photobucket.com/albums/vv246/mushrooms2009/
all the mushrooms are in that account, thanks !

Went to our field on sun, found about 15 cubes, and about 30 meanies! Also brought a patty home that we picked cubes off of, and today I noticed some pinning on it...in my backyard! I'm spreading Black Kow pasteurized manure in all the shady humid spots. Hopefully i wont be walking very far to pick here soon!

Only spotted a couple of cubes growing in the last 2 weeks, none of my regular fields are producing. Plenty of inactive pans everywhere.
Its rained extremely well the last couple of days, so north florida should have some definate growth within the next 48 hrs.

you should cut or pinch the stems instead of pulling them out, that way you won't get a bunch of shit in your bag

yeah, I know. But i usually try to just get in and out of the fields. I normally don't bother brinding my camera, but I'm going to start bringing it just incase I find something really nice looking.
i have a couple photos taken in the fields in this thread.

Don't feel bad, I'm not big on taking my camera out in fields either, and I love taking pictures. I just know if I take mine out in any of my fields, I'll mess it up, some how, some way, but that's just me. lol

Pan Cyan and lil Pan Cyan in the back left.
Pan Cyan's
Pan Cyan + Pan Ant's(laying down)
A few cubies...
A decent little snack. Nom, nom, nom. I know there are a couple inactive Pans in the back.

Cubes are out in Central Florida - they are few and far between but they are out!

nice finds shroomgatherer. can't wait till Cubes start popping up in the south. there's still none in the fields, it's pretty crazy.
.., you think those Pans in the back could be Pan Subbs?
and this was found this morning in SW FL. its an active Pan but I'm not positive it's Cyanescens...

this isn't that big of a deal, but there are several other types of active blueing Panaeolus mushrooms that grow in tropical areas. Tropicalis, Cambodginiensis, and Bispora are three. They can all have very similar macroscopic appearances, and a microscope is needed for a proper identification.
my point is, basically, if someone found Pan Tropicalis it would most likely get identified as Pan Cyanescens,.

Can anyone name all the actives in Florida? I thought this might help in knowing what to look for.
Most of us know what to look for when we are profiling them , but we always are wondering what is this I just found?
I think a list of them would help everyone in targeting their specie ms to observe what to look for.
I seen a list for all the states a few weeks ago but cant find it.

I found 105.2 grams of Copes and 80.3 grams of Cubes. The one huge cube in the palm of my hand is 41.3 grams. We are definitely in cube season now because am very far down south if I have there should be all over Florida.

Well North Florida has finally started producing, 1 out of about 3 dozen fields I've checked this week, the area these were found in, has multiple fields nearby, that are also heavily covered in cube activity.

Thanks I found the list is was looking for. On a side note: Guys be careful I'm not trying to make everyone paranoid just be smart about things. I can't believe this guy admitted to it after he knew a copter was over head. He had plenty of time to get rid of anything he might have had. Never admit anything keep your mouth shut. http://blogs.tampabay.com/bizarre/2009/06/crossbowarmed-teen-caught-picking-psychedlic-mushrooms.html
Last what is the longest time you should leave a cap on when doing a spore print?

I'll try to answer your question with two answers...
You can begin taking a spore print ANY TIME as long as you have a cap, fresh or dry. Whether or not you'll get a sufficient print ~ time will tell. Take your sporeprints on tinfoil if possible or typing paper. Sometimes cardboard can be a helpful substitute. The best sporeprints are certainly taken from fresh, adult specimens. However, always try to take a sporeprint. What's the worst that can happen? SHe says "no"?

Are you saying that 1 out of 36 fields is producing? I would say that is a very low rate. What part of N FL are you in? I am in north FL, around Pensacola, and the conditions haven't been too great around here lately. The humidity has not been getting above 60% during the day and maybe 80% at night. Also the rains have been infrequent over the last week. Waiting for some strong rains and high humidity.

Central/Eastern Florida, here.

Totally thought those were copes when I first saw em. Cap comes in toward the stem underneath and they don't bruise, though. Fucking inactive pans... See the one cope, though?

Funky lookin cope.

Big shroom from previous pic:

Big shrooms from previous pic:

That was my first hunt.
Here's the results of the second. A lot more copes this time. I like the bluing on top from rain drops.

Look at the stems on these guys! 8V

One of the only nice cubes I found:

The infamous tortoise mushroom:

If anyone can provide an ID on these following shrooms, I'd appreciate it. I thought they were neat looking. I know one's a stinkhorn, but I don't know anything past that.

I took the time to make it back out to my active field yesterday morning and found a decent amount of cubes, -roughly 460 grams wet. I didn't have the opportunity to take any pictures but I plan on going back out the day after a good rain, ill be sure to post more pics then.
I'd also like to advise all shroom hunters to always be prepared to come in contact with wild animals. I crossed paths with a snake yesterday that was just waiting for me to step on her.

has anyone dosed dry Pan Cyans, and if so how much potency loss is there.? thanks

If you have an opporunity to do close-ups of each panaeolus species sometime this rain season, it would do wonders for the hunting forum and identification assistance. I'll try to do the same.

Cool. I prefer them fresh as well. But they are great dried also. Definitely dried they are not as potent as fresh but with how many you have of them - it won't matter.

Good morning Shroomery I woke up an hour before sunrise this morning and drove to my favorite field. Yesterday I had a gut feeling that there might be a decent amount of cubes out there today.. this is what I found:

:o My speculations were more than right!

a few pictures of the actual hunt itself, check out that mutation! ^^
and finally, the dose I will be taking tonight. These babies were calling out to me. I cant disobey!
I'll be going back out in a few more days where I'll be taking more pictures and such. Hope everyone's having a great shroom season! Good luck out there and BE SAFE!!

Wow, I checked at sunrise this morning and found nothing... not a single cube. Actually wasn't even seeing any inactive pans growing this time either.
Around what area of Florida were these from?
