Lets do this the right way. Post your Florida finds for 2009 HERE!
I'm from south Florida, as you Floridians know we have had a pretty dry year up until the last week or 2. My hunting partner and I were sitting around Saturday, with nothing to do. We decided to make a quick trip to our field to search for shroom activity. The rain hadn't completely soaked into the ground yet, there were large puddles all over the field, but dedicated shroom hunters like us didn't give a cow shit. After several minutes of searching we came across a few cubes, and that always feels good.

These are the first 2 cubes we came across. The bigger one weighing in at almost 6 grams dry. All together we harvested ~45 grams dried in 2 days. Hopefully ill have more pictures to post after this upcoming weekend
Now its your turn fl shroomers, show us what you got

Beautiful picture and nice intro!!! Nice way to kick off the Officially Official Florida Thread!
I have yet to get anything great since the recent rains...but I'll be out there this week at some point and will make up for it . These 2 pics are from April.

I think you can ride those things like horses but I am not really sure.
Enter, your mushroom is either a Suillus or a Boletus with large pores.

At first I thought it was a typical bolete. Now I looked up Suillus cothurnatus var. cothurnatus and believe it to be this. Oddly, two of the three had yellow foam-like undersides (under the cap) with pinkish tinted pores on the inside. One had about 85% white pores and the other 15% the normal yellow type. They weren't slimy.

The white pores are a fungus from the genus Hypomyces attacking your Suillus.

If they are staining blue they are Panaeolus cyanescens, however yours look more like the inactive Panaeolus antillarum to me.

Yes, for Panaeolus cyanescens.

there are couple types of active blueing Panaeolus mushrooms that grow in south Florida. and they need to be looked at under a microscope to properly identify them.
here's a few types of Copes: Cyanescens, Tropicalis, Cambodgeniensis, Chlorocystis, Bisporus.

So would it be accurate to say that there are about five species that look identical to one another macroscopically but are clearly different under a microscope Also the genus copelandia no longer applies and to call some of these copes is more of a term of endearment?

yeah, I don't normally use the term Copelandia, it confuses things.
but basically the term Copelandia simply means active blueing Panaeolus

Hey, well i'm new to this site. I live in Ocala, which is central florida, I've always had a sort of fascination with mushrooms, but i've never really known much about them. Me and my friends were just at some nature park and i would just look around for different types of mushrooms, i was wondering if anyone could identify what these might be?
This mushroom was found right next to a stump, it is exceptionally large, around 7-8 inches, it is very hard, and the stem is almost rootlike..i'm sort of convinced it is a root, the top is bright yellow with a white edge around it, and the stem is hard and purple and stick-like.

This mushroom was found in a wet woodland area, take note, it has been raining and over 95 degrees in the same day for the past 2 weeks. This one is bright yellow with a white stem, its around 4 inches in height.

This one used to have a yellow top, (im not sure what to call the top of the mushroom). but it has faded to white somehow since yesterday. It was found in the same area as the ones above. It has a very flat and wide top and a relatively short stem, its around 3-4 inches long as well.

This one is also found in the wooded area, it is very short and doesnt have those strange spore things underneath its head.

Last but not last, i found this one pretty strange. It was found in a pair of 3, one of them was larger than a potato, they are purple and slimy and hard.

Well, thats it for now.
If anyone can tell me anything about these mushrooms that would be amazing!
thanks =]
**edit The pictures are not working so to view them just go here, http://s688.photobucket.com/albums/vv246/mushrooms2009/
all the mushrooms are in that account, thanks !

Went to our field on sun, found about 15 cubes, and about 30 meanies! Also brought a patty home that we picked cubes off of, and today I noticed some pinning on it...in my backyard! I'm spreading Black Kow pasteurized manure in all the shady humid spots. Hopefully i wont be walking very far to pick here soon!

Only spotted a couple of cubes growing in the last 2 weeks, none of my regular fields are producing. Plenty of inactive pans everywhere.
Its rained extremely well the last couple of days, so north florida should have some definate growth within the next 48 hrs.

you should cut or pinch the stems instead of pulling them out, that way you won't get a bunch of shit in your bag

yeah, I know. But i usually try to just get in and out of the fields. I normally don't bother brinding my camera, but I'm going to start bringing it just incase I find something really nice looking.
i have a couple photos taken in the fields in this thread.

Don't feel bad, I'm not big on taking my camera out in fields either, and I love taking pictures. I just know if I take mine out in any of my fields, I'll mess it up, some how, some way, but that's just me. lol

Pan Cyan and lil Pan Cyan in the back left.
Pan Cyan's
Pan Cyan + Pan Ant's(laying down)
A few cubies...
A decent little snack. Nom, nom, nom. I know there are a couple inactive Pans in the back.

Cubes are out in Central Florida - they are few and far between but they are out!

nice finds shroomgatherer. can't wait till Cubes start popping up in the south. there's still none in the fields, it's pretty crazy.
.., you think those Pans in the back could be Pan Subbs?
and this was found this morning in SW FL. its an active Pan but I'm not positive it's Cyanescens...

this isn't that big of a deal, but there are several other types of active blueing Panaeolus mushrooms that grow in tropical areas. Tropicalis, Cambodginiensis, and Bispora are three. They can all have very similar macroscopic appearances, and a microscope is needed for a proper identification.
my point is, basically, if someone found Pan Tropicalis it would most likely get identified as Pan Cyanescens,.

Can anyone name all the actives in Florida? I thought this might help in knowing what to look for.
Most of us know what to look for when we are profiling them , but we always are wondering what is this I just found?
I think a list of them would help everyone in targeting their specie ms to observe what to look for.
I seen a list for all the states a few weeks ago but cant find it.

I found 105.2 grams of Copes and 80.3 grams of Cubes. The one huge cube in the palm of my hand is 41.3 grams. We are definitely in cube season now because am very far down south if I have there should be all over Florida.

Well North Florida has finally started producing, 1 out of about 3 dozen fields I've checked this week, the area these were found in, has multiple fields nearby, that are also heavily covered in cube activity.

Thanks I found the list is was looking for. On a side note: Guys be careful I'm not trying to make everyone paranoid just be smart about things. I can't believe this guy admitted to it after he knew a copter was over head. He had plenty of time to get rid of anything he might have had. Never admit anything keep your mouth shut. http://blogs.tampabay.com/bizarre/2009/06/crossbowarmed-teen-caught-picking-psychedlic-mushrooms.html
Last what is the longest time you should leave a cap on when doing a spore print?

I'll try to answer your question with two answers...
You can begin taking a spore print ANY TIME as long as you have a cap, fresh or dry. Whether or not you'll get a sufficient print ~ time will tell. Take your sporeprints on tinfoil if possible or typing paper. Sometimes cardboard can be a helpful substitute. The best sporeprints are certainly taken from fresh, adult specimens. However, always try to take a sporeprint. What's the worst that can happen? SHe says "no"?

Are you saying that 1 out of 36 fields is producing? I would say that is a very low rate. What part of N FL are you in? I am in north FL, around Pensacola, and the conditions haven't been too great around here lately. The humidity has not been getting above 60% during the day and maybe 80% at night. Also the rains have been infrequent over the last week. Waiting for some strong rains and high humidity.

Central/Eastern Florida, here.

Totally thought those were copes when I first saw em. Cap comes in toward the stem underneath and they don't bruise, though. Fucking inactive pans... See the one cope, though?

Funky lookin cope.

Big shroom from previous pic:

Big shrooms from previous pic:

That was my first hunt.
Here's the results of the second. A lot more copes this time. I like the bluing on top from rain drops.

Look at the stems on these guys! 8V

One of the only nice cubes I found:

The infamous tortoise mushroom:

If anyone can provide an ID on these following shrooms, I'd appreciate it. I thought they were neat looking. I know one's a stinkhorn, but I don't know anything past that.

I took the time to make it back out to my active field yesterday morning and found a decent amount of cubes, -roughly 460 grams wet. I didn't have the opportunity to take any pictures but I plan on going back out the day after a good rain, ill be sure to post more pics then.
I'd also like to advise all shroom hunters to always be prepared to come in contact with wild animals. I crossed paths with a snake yesterday that was just waiting for me to step on her.

has anyone dosed dry Pan Cyans, and if so how much potency loss is there.? thanks

If you have an opporunity to do close-ups of each panaeolus species sometime this rain season, it would do wonders for the hunting forum and identification assistance. I'll try to do the same.

Cool. I prefer them fresh as well. But they are great dried also. Definitely dried they are not as potent as fresh but with how many you have of them - it won't matter.

Good morning Shroomery I woke up an hour before sunrise this morning and drove to my favorite field. Yesterday I had a gut feeling that there might be a decent amount of cubes out there today.. this is what I found:

:o My speculations were more than right!

a few pictures of the actual hunt itself, check out that mutation! ^^
and finally, the dose I will be taking tonight. These babies were calling out to me. I cant disobey!
I'll be going back out in a few more days where I'll be taking more pictures and such. Hope everyone's having a great shroom season! Good luck out there and BE SAFE!!

Wow, I checked at sunrise this morning and found nothing... not a single cube. Actually wasn't even seeing any inactive pans growing this time either.

it hasn't rained in my area for 4 or 5 days. But I went back to a couple fields and did find some more active Pans.
Basically, If the field your hunting on has lots of trees and/or tall grass, you don't necessarily need rain to find mushrooms. Most of these types of pastures always have thick fog covering them at night, which provides a perfect environment for fungus.

No, it's not that one is favorable over another, I prefer cultivating the strains with really light caps over the darker colored ones. It's a personal preference. I just think that the blue bruising looks really cool on the almost all white cubes.

Argh this thread has turned into a Florida rain discussion thread.
Please see the hunting forum rules:
5. Do not make threads or posts discussing or reporting the weather. This includes complaining about the weather, asking if the current weather is "good for shrooms", or how long to wait after rain fall to go hunting. As a general rule of thumb, if it has rained within the last 1-10 days, and the temperatures are correct for the type of mushroom you're looking for, and the time of year is correct then it is very likely that the mushroom you are looking for is growing.
Quote:
So come on people's any new finds? any news?
4. Do not ask about current finds in your area. These posts have been flooding the forum for years. If you're curious about if mushrooms are growing in your area, get out there and look! Mushrooms don't read the books. Sometimes they fruit outside of season. There is no set date for any season, only vast generalizations. Your best bet is that if it's close to the season for the mushroom you are looking for and its been raining, you just might find some.

I just moved to Florida...
Do actives here only grow on actual Cow Manure or can I have some luck on river banks and manure-fertilized soil?
There's also a race-track near by, wondered if I could have any luck over there...
hmmm?

Hey man!..The quick answer is yes. Although personally I have more luck in fields I have also found my fair share of actives outside of them. Pan Subbs (an active panaeolus sp.) grow well in freshly laid lawns, well manicured gardens, compost heaps and such. I would recommend buying a field guide or something though because it really won't help you much if you don't have a somewhat good idea of what you are looking for. I say this because it's easy to mistake these (as well as other pan. sp) if you haven't looked at them a lot..they tend to carry some similarities. Anyway, I've also had strange luck finding dung loving shrooms like cyans (very few) outside the fields but this was because I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a huge area that had been heavily dosed with cow manure when landscaping. Florida is a great place for shroomies, they love the weather here So if you're interested in the hobby i would say you landed in a good spot
Good Luck!

Well put. but In my experience I have never found any actives in just a random field (even in heavily dosed areas with cow manure used for landscaping) I only have ever found them in fields but I'm not as experienced as you though since I just started this year. happy shrooming

Well in response to that I'm probably as much of a newbie as you..I started early this year as well . On the other hand, I attribute my "luck" to sheer determination and a good dose of serendipity..i would never advise anyone to waste their time looking for cubes OR cyans on lawns..these is a VERY rare occurence imho..i actually went back to that same spot a week later only to find a few subbs and olivaceous but no more cubes or cyans ..so there ya go..I would say fields are your best bet when hunting in our area.. although it never hurts to keep an eye out on other locations..you never know

Woke up at 5 this morning and made a quick trip to my field before work to check out what was poppin. I was able to grab a little over 450 grams wet in a little over 30 minutes. I couldn't realy stay any longer otherwise I would've searched my 'jackpot' areas of the field and doubled the find. Glad to see more people finding actives in their areas.

of course i moved to the one city in Florida without any farms, cow pastures or livestock nearby...
i looked all around for open fields without luck. closest thing to a creek or river bank is a canal. race track is a no go
i did find a list of nearby parks, would that be just a waste of time?
From what i heard, South Florida isn't country land. Mostly Central and N. Florida. Unless there's some secret

Not Pasco. This one was in the Riverview/Bradenton area from about two weeks ago. Why is it against the rules to talk about rain? If it is a real rule I'll never say the r word again if it is.

not true. I'm in southwest Florida, and there are tons and tons of acres of pasture land where mushrooms flourish.
if you are by the coast then you're most likely in a pretty populated city. And If you want to find the fields you're going to have to drive inland a bit. Basically all the inland counties are full of fields, pretty much nothing but farm land.
you could try to go to this site (http://www.bing.com/maps), or use Google Earth to search your area for fields by looking at satellite imagery.

Good guess, broward county
I could look at the maps, i just dont want to go way far out of my way for no reason.
the weather has been perfect down here, mushrooms are flourishing but mostly grey ones on red wood chips or golden brown with mostly straight stems have completely flat caps on the lawn. didn't think they were edible by any means. no blue bruising or blue gills
then there was 4 or 5 of these other day, they looked like "albino amanitas" with mostly rounded tops, some were beginning the concave stage tho:

a little patch with the above (not the species, but looks exactly like it) keeps flourishing and disappearing, seen on/off the past couple of weeks. although the patch is growing under a tree, on the grass, near a sidewalk (by a canal though) so i dismissed it as even being close to active.
maybe if it pops up again i'll make an i.d. thread unless you already have an idea of what species i'm talking about.

Because the weather is different everywhere and its always raining somewhere, so posts about the rain are somewhat pointless and if everyone posts about the rain when it rains the forum will be flooded with nothing but "its raining here..." type of posts.
Anyways not a big deal, you can mention the rain if its not the main point of the post.
Usually people get away with it but I saw tons of posts in this thread about the rain so I thought I'd mention it.

Was expecting quite the turnout, but to find fields of poop with no fruit as well, thats no fun, even more so sweating balls in the heat. had to purchase a quarter of the finest homegrowns just for my lack of luck, one love!

Yea the cubes I found 10 days ago or so were pretty nice but just a little small. One of them gave me a nice little trip but the others didn't do so much.

I went out today for about 10mins walked only a 15-20ft section and found about 34-38 caps most of then I just Flicked and left.. due to the size. This is what I thought was alright to take.

Also I tried doing a few things that should help produce alot more caps.. I will know one week from now 100% If what im tring has any or no effect on the yeild. Any countys around the Hernando area getting lots of rain?

so i went shrooming yesterday in a field i had never been to before. friends told me it was a very discreet field with a shitload of shrooms. i thought it was too good to be true. there was a shitload of copes, and very few cubes. anyway, long story short, it was to good to be true. started walking back to the car with our batch and there was a redneck with a shotgun yelling at us. i slickly dumped the mushrooms i had in my beanie without them seeing them. and we got tresspassed from that field, which overall they said was 400 acres, and the cops told us we were on the wrong side, the good shit was on the other side of the field. i could have went to jail cause i am on probation, but luckily the cop talked to redneck into not prosecuting us.
just as a warning, dont go shrooming in crystal springs off of jerry road in pasco county.

Do they look active?
Or poisnous?
Found in cow dung shaded area. They look bigger and different from the ones I found in the same field a month ago or so.

My buddy was trapped in a field for 2 + hours 2 Sundays ago because the po poz got word that someone was picking them god dang mushroomz again. He made his way back to his car and rode out safely. Then 10 minutes later the cops saw him and pulled his ass over and he stayed in over night until I bailed him out.
Shit!!

I never had to go to court but its still on my record something like possession of a hallucinogen
I was in orlando but they took me to some far ass county jail and jammed me in two person cell with four others... I think it was brevard county?

A few more cubes today. Ran in to another shroomer on my way into the field, he had a fat plastic bag full of cubes. At least he pointed me to the side of the field he hadn't been in.

A bunch of active copes! Some of these guys are vibrant!
