I just moved to Florida...

Do actives here only grow on actual Cow Manure or can I have some luck on river banks and manure-fertilized soil?

There's also a race-track near by, wondered if I could have any luck over there...

hmmm?

Hey man!..The quick answer is yes.  Although personally I have more luck in fields I have also found my fair share of actives outside of them.  Pan Subbs (an active panaeolus sp.) grow well in freshly laid lawns, well manicured gardens, compost heaps and such.  I would recommend buying a field guide or something though because it really won't help you much if you don't have a somewhat good idea of what you are looking for.  I say this because it's easy to mistake these (as well as other pan. sp) if you haven't looked at them a lot..they tend to carry some similarities.  Anyway, I've also had strange luck finding dung loving shrooms like cyans (very few) outside the fields but this was because I was fortunate enough to stumble upon a huge area that had been heavily dosed with cow manure when landscaping.
Florida is a great place for shroomies, they love the weather here  So if you're interested in the hobby i would say you landed in a good spot

Good Luck!

Well put.
but In my experience I have never found any actives in just a random field (even in heavily dosed areas with cow manure used for landscaping)
I only have ever found them in fields but I'm not as experienced as you though since I just started this year.
happy shrooming :mushroom2:

Well in response to that I'm probably as much of a newbie as you..I started early this year as well .  On the other hand, I attribute my "luck" to sheer determination and a good dose of serendipity..i would never advise anyone to waste their time looking for cubes OR cyans on lawns..these is a VERY rare occurence imho..i actually went back to that same spot a week later only to find a few subbs and olivaceous but no more cubes or cyans :frown:..so there ya go..I would say fields are your best bet when hunting in our area..
although it never hurts to keep an eye out on other locations..you never know

I found a really nice cube on a freshly sodded lawn once. Really not a common occurrence though...

Woke up at 5 this morning and made a quick trip to my field before work to check out what was poppin. I was able to grab a little over 450 grams wet in a little over 30 minutes. I couldn't realy stay any longer otherwise I would've searched my 'jackpot' areas of the field and doubled the find. Glad to see more people finding actives in their areas.

of course i moved to the one city in Florida without any farms, cow pastures or livestock nearby...

i looked all around for open fields without luck. closest thing to a creek or river bank is a canal. race track is a no go

i did find a list of nearby parks, would that be just a waste of time?

From what i heard, South Florida isn't country land. Mostly Central and N. Florida. Unless there's some secret :frown:

Not Pasco. This one was in the Riverview/Bradenton area from about two weeks ago. Why is it against the rules to talk about rain? If it is a real rule I'll never say the r word again if it is.

not true. I'm in southwest Florida, and there are tons and tons of acres of pasture land where mushrooms flourish.

if you are by the coast then you're most likely in a pretty populated city.  And If you want to find the fields you're going to have to drive inland a bit.  Basically all the inland counties are full of fields, pretty much nothing but farm land.

you could try to go to this site (http://www.bing.com/maps), or use Google Earth to search your area for fields by looking at satellite imagery.

Good guess, broward county

I could look at the maps, i just dont want to go way far out of my way for no reason.

the weather has been perfect down here, mushrooms are flourishing but mostly grey ones on red wood chips or golden brown with mostly straight stems have completely flat caps on the lawn. didn't think they were edible by any means. no blue bruising or blue gills

then there was 4 or 5 of these other day, they looked like "albino amanitas" with mostly rounded tops, some were beginning the concave stage tho:

a little patch with the above (not the species, but looks exactly like it) keeps flourishing and disappearing, seen on/off the past couple of weeks. although the patch is growing under a tree, on the grass, near a sidewalk (by a canal though) so i dismissed it as even being close to active.

maybe if it pops up again i'll make an i.d. thread unless you already have an idea of what species i'm talking about.

Because the weather is different everywhere and its always raining somewhere, so posts about the rain are somewhat pointless and if everyone posts about the rain when it rains the forum will be flooded with nothing but "its raining here..." type of posts.

Anyways not a big deal, you can mention the rain if its not the main point of the post.

Usually people get away with it but I saw tons of posts in this thread about the rain so I thought I'd mention it.
