San Francisco, WTF???

I have always wanted to visit SF -- to see the Haight-Ashbury area, the park, all the cool places I've read about. I wanted to visit where the Summer of Love took place and see all the history.
My friend recently went to SF for a week for a work conference. What he said about SF when he got back astounded me.
He said he thought it was the grimiest, dirtiest, filthiest place that he's ever been to and had more beggars than any other city he's been to as well. He is VERY WELL travelled. Mind you, he lives in the Baltimore-Washington D.C. area. He said SF was even dirtier and definitely worse overall than the slummy areas of D.C. and Baltimore. I used to live in the DC/Baltimore area and know how fucking filthy they are..
Fuck that! Cross SF off my travel itinerary.. Goddammit..

You should still go, but haven't you done any reading past the mid 1960s? The place went from hippies to a million homeless people looking for a free ride then crooks then a sort of horrible police state. Then a whole bunch of people left.

Admittedly I don't know shit about SF and have been looking at it through the "rose colored glasses" of the late '60's.
I have read that it has some of the highest real estate prices in mainland USA.

Some parts of Frisco are gorgeous, other parts, Oakland ::cough::, are not so nice. You might be disappointed as a travel destination, but being part of California, there is plenty to do. Every city has grime and beggars. BUT in SF you can buy a sheet right off the street pretty damn easily then smoke J's with a bunch of transients. That might just be Frisco.

My fiancee's dad wants us to come to Cali this summer, stop by SF a few days.
If I can score some acid.. oh man..

Then is my heart buried alive in snow.

I wouldn't recomend going down to Haight-Ashbury to try to score acid. Sure it's around, but you pretty much gotta know somebody to find a reliable source. There's so many scetchy ass shady fuckers that are capitolizing on the areas reputation and selling BUNK.
That said, I do think it's a beautiful city. Like any big city, it has its ugly shady areas(Haight Ashbury has become on of them), but it also has alot of beauty and great culture. Don't spend all your time in the City though. Check out the surrounding coastal areas to the north and south of there. Very epic country IMO.

By this merit, may all attain omniscience.
May it defeat the enemy, wrong doing.
From the stormy waves of birth, old age, sickness and death,
from the ocean of samsara,
may I free all beings.

I'm just glad I've got two people who know the area very well to cart my ass around.

Don't let his review ruin shit for you. He was probably on the wrong side of the bridge.
I was there just this last spring and though it was GORGEOUS! I'm thinking about moving somewhere in the area when I'm done with school.

ive lived on the streets in san fran it can be both sides of the spectrum for me, it was mostly the ugly side i think if u have means to survive there..... and thus have the capability of just walking past the griminess heading to a destination ur good. i guess that goes for anywhere but fuck that city in the fucking ass as far as traveling and living out of ur backpack. the fucking haight is so fucked these days. ive seen so much violence more so on the haight than anywhere else in that city and trust me man, i was all over it. i would read about murders that happened on streets and intersections that i just walked down minutes before or after. the cops on the haight i think turned a blind eye to alot of the "SF DOGS" hoo pretty much just do what they want, rob kids in the park, ive seen them pull out knives, sick dogs on people, straight up pocket check and rob hippies almost as like taxation. man, i never knew how much i loved my good ol NYC as im from long island, untill i went to san fran. and dude, ive been to just about every major city in america. i think the thing about SF that gets me is that they claim to be such a great city. and man, there are things about it that are fucking awesome. there are some sweet underground scenes etc. definitly some magic to it but yea, since i spent some time kikin it hard in SF, i have a new found love of NYC!

Haight-Ashbury honestly is not exactly a cool place to visit. If you want to visit SF go to Golden Gate Park, it's really nice.
Haight is just bums, a few smoke shops, a few "in" shops like Stussy and True, and some restaurants. You can go through it in like 10min and feel like you just wasted 10min.

I used to live in San Francisco and currently live in downtown Baltimore.
Sort of amazed your friend would say SF is more slummy than Bmore. It's a wild city and it definitely has its dark corners but Bmore has blocks and blocks of abandoned buildings while SF is full of expensive condos.
I didn't like SF because you were either one of two types of people there...a filthy rich yuppie who worked 80 hrs a week or a dirt poor street rat who didn't have a job. It pushed you towards those extremes. I didn't really want to be either, so now I live in Baltimore where I have a comfortable middle class existence on a salary that would render you homeless in San Francisco. Sure, I hate the high crime levels, but I'm good at ignoring the reality of it while I go about my business.

Yeah the city is full of homeless people, it's pretty annoying. I just ignore them.
San Francisco is weird because you can be in a nice area and walk like 5 blocks to a ghetto shit hole.

I've been to San Francisco many times, and I found it to be the most beautiful city I'd ever seen. It's like a fairy wonderland, it's so beautiful.... not like other cities at all.

Thinking its some magical hippie wonderland is delusional. Its a large city and has all the same problems any large city has. Its dirty smelly and you get hit up for change all the time. just like any large city.
but to cross it off of your travel list cause of something someone else experienced is stupid. this area has SOOOO many great things to see and its your loss is you dont want to see them. Just take it for what it is, a large city with colorfull people of every ethnicity with a very left wing history.

man i had no idea, but i have only been to SF once for about 2 weeks. i went with a buddy and stuff happened that caused us to have to live cheaply down there. it was one guy "Popeye" who stopped us from walking into a mexican (gang. lots of gangs in this city)neighborhood and he took us to haight street, introduced us to many of the "SF DOGS" and they told us we could consider ourselves one of them. they showed us good spots to camp in the park and gave us free drugs to sell on the street. they did nothing but take care of us, no harm was even attempted, but i would believe it happens. it most definitely is a dirty, violent city. but its still a great fun place to visit.

its easy enough i think. You just have to know what your looking for, some people out there will sell you DOx as "family fluff brah" unless you try it in front of them.
