Drug use in Portugal after de-criminalization
    #10134768 - 04/09/09 09:49 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Drug use in Portugal plunges after decriminalization

Portugal decriminalized drugs in mid-2001. The effect on drug use has been a dramatic decrease at the same time when drug usage rates in the rest of Europe have been increasing. Glen Greenwald has more.

Drugs should be legal because you own your body, and the idea of a consensual crime where you are both victim and perpetrator, is anti-freedom and irrational. But for pragmatists out there who can’t get on board because they think that legalizing drugs will result in more drug usage, here is the evidence that it will not.

Yeah, the myth you strike down is persistant and, unfortunatly, fuled by silly preusmptions more than evidence.

Who exactly is having trouble getting drugs now?

I always ask folks: are you going to start doing "drugs" if they are legalized?  "Oh, NO!"

Always the "other guy".  Newsflash:  the "other guy" is allready doing drugs.

people have been pointing to similar statistics for some years now to show that drug wars fuel addiction.

But for 20-24 year olds, use increased over the same period.

It's also quite notable that the source seems to indicate that this is an "annual report".  I'd be curious to see the data for all of the years in between (now 2001-2009).  Without these, it makes me think the author is simply "cherry picking" his data to support his (perhaps unfounded) hypothesis.

Drugs are legal in USA. USA is highest user of prescription drugs. To all the parents out there: the drug pusher you have to worry about is the drug pusher at your childs school who is trying to get your child put on a psychiatric medication.

I find it amazing that people speak of drug users in USA as if drug users are such scumbags however when they speak of drug users they omitt the fact that America relies on drugs and pills for everything. people in America think pills are magic. The truth is prescription drugs often kill people and they screw up peoples minds.

The police are basically hired thugs who are in the service of the pharmaceutical industry(or should I say cartels) and basicall the police do the job of protecting the territory/turf of the pharmaceutical industry from competing drug-dealers by arresting people for possession of things like marijuana.

I do not think illegal drugs are good however pharmaceutical drugs do far more damage than illegal drugs. We live in a totalitarian iatrarchy. Iatrarchy means "rule by physicians". People worship doctors and are addicted to pharmaceutical drugs and the police protect pharmaceutical drugs by arresting dealers of illegal drugs. And Americans are hypochondriacs.

This is very interesting!

I used this information a few days ago on a debate on War on Drugs. I was wondering if anybody has found the other annual reports too? Also if anybody has been able to find more cold hard statistics like this for other countries that have legalized/decriminalized drug possession.

I've searched a bit but most of the info isn't what I am looking for.

Edit: Make sure you check out Greenwald's speech at CATO
http://www.cato.org/event.php?eventid=5887

He speaks on the WoD and Portugal. I'm listening to it right now, seems excellent.

I'm not sure about Europe much, but Vancouver has a safe injection site called "insite" and it offers rehabilitation as well as drug information services. Information regarding the success of insite in preventing overdoses/infections from unsafe injection practices as well as success in changing the habits of addicts/new addicts and overall trends with regards to disease prevention from the program. Though to be fair, a lot of the reason clean needles are getting out are because of safe injection work of others throughout the community who aren't affiliated with insite and in fact do the job that insite used to do before they became authorized to allow injections on sight.

Just something for you to look into and it's the only one in the country so you may consider it an easy experimental bubble for statistics. I would point you in the direction of some data about it but I just haven't looked into it much, other than what I've seen from docus.
