Shitake substrate
    #10250946 - 04/28/09 05:31 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Hey, I just received my shitake spore syringe, and I was wondering if Shitake would grow alright on a cake of just BRF and Verm. I could possibly get some sawdust, but will just BRF and Vermiculite work?

Watch the ending of the 4th part on BRF tek:
http://www.mushroomvideos.com/BRF-Pf-Tek

It talks about cakes for cultivating shiitake. Basically the same ratio, but substitutes the vermiculite for sawdust.

A normal BRF/verm cake would probably not yield very well, if at all. I've never seen it done at least..

Thanks, and I have one more question. I don't know how a shitake syringe is exactly supposed to look (got mine of spores101 by the way), but it looks like basically just water with a clump of some growth in the middle, not spores. Is this normal?

Yes, you will never buy an edible spore syringe... very rarely.

What you bought was a culture syringe ... its cloned material.

It will work the same use it as you would a spore syringe.
