South Australia 2009 inactives

South Australia Finally had the heavens open up. It certainly was a very dry spell over the last few months Since Thursday lunch time and as I write this thread Adelaide has had at least 60mils and even more in the Hills. It is still to early for actives but I'm confident by at least next week the season will begin. Ive dug around in small parts of a garden and the top inch is very wet but underneath is as dry as a bone. I would expect people to have gone out already. Hell they might even shock me if they found some actives. Enjoy the season hunters I know I will Cant Bloody well wait

Looks like it may be some form of gGymnopilus, as they look fairly similar to that, it looks like a rather large mushroom, and grow on stumps and tree bases, but I could be wrong.
Nice to see some people out looking already.

There are no actives as of yet. I went out this morning for a nice walk in which it was but there was no activity at all besides the beginning of the flourishing Fly Agaric As I stated above I believe in about 1 week definitely 2 weeks the active season will begin.

Only active species do that. It looks more green because gyms are yellow.

cos theres no blue
That means its probably inactive.

yep long time lurker here as well, been waiting at least 6 months for my chance to finally try my luck at scouting.
Anyone got any basic tips, all i know so far is the weather details and to look in the pine Forrest and to look for ones that bruise blue (although that doesn't mean they are safe or active). I'm pretty sure I'm going to go out and come back with a shoebox filled with utter crap ha ha.
Anyone one willing to show me the ropes (without showing me their secret spots).

Yep sure are mushie patrol, checked a spot that has been pretty faithful over the years in terms of popping up shrooms in early may and viola, there they were:

Can't believe how overgrown this place is getting, good to see some areas were mowed back a bit, but no shrooms there yet. Not surprised at kuitpo considering the weather conditions its had over the past few weeks.

Hey guys I'm going to be walking the whole Heysen Trail this winter starting from the South... so that means I'll be spending about 3 weeks in the mushie zone let's see who gets the most shrooms this year :P
let's see, 9 hours times 21 = 189 hours of hunting! hehehe
I'll be leaving in July so I'm hoping there will still be plenty around by then.

Well I reckon i am going to go down kuitpo monday. Never been but think Im thinking im going to check out the red boxed area (Blackfellows creek). Maybe walk a bit of the tingella trail. Do you reckon this is the right kind of area?

Also do you reckon its a bad idea to bring a dog? I thought my dog may like a wander, and she will keep me company, cause at the moment im going solo? Bad idea?
Sorry for all my stupid questions...

Anyone ever try them goldfields? One looks particularly like a good spot.
Dogs are ok, bring a leash possibly though, don't want to attract attention if you're in a spot that needs a leash and you don't have your dog on one. Won't be able to take a dog in the conservation park either.

They look exactly the same as this dudes, they look the same when they are developing, purple looking spore print, they bruise blue and are found in clusters.
Obviously you are far more experienced than me, so i appreciate the help could you please help me by telling me whats wrong about them, so i know how to better identify them in the future?
I spent ages going through photos of cubes, and while a lot of them dont resemble the ones i posted, some of them do. Certainly a few from this site even.
Im looking forward to learning more about mycology in general, so please be detailed in your reply.
thanks

Im newb, but from what i can tell these are either the real thing or a lookalike.
I will get some samples tomorrow, for spore printing. Heres a pic of them at one location.
Those are Parasola auricoma. They do not look like cubensis.

Thanks Alan. I went back to what i thought was the random patch growing. (and its growing UNDER a bush that yo have to move to get to them, and they were gone. No pins, just little holes in the ground. Theres was 2 dead black ones. I guess someone else though they were good too, or they were someones guerrilla plantation, and they noticed my boot print and that i had left a mature one i picked there, to drop spores and hopefully something will come of it..anyways im not too fussed lol..if it was someone from heres place, and they recognised it sorry, i didnt know. And Alan's ID looks remarkably like it..(although so do the others i saw, and the bruising looks blue - purple..not black but not like baby blue either..its darker blue.
Anyways, heres todays pics:

Ive been out and about today...Im not going to say anything regarding what they are, Ill let you guys id them if you choose.

looks like you got some stropharia (?species?) there prot3eus1, pics in the second, third and fourth row, the red capped ones. None of them are active though, but it looks like you're looking in the right habitat.

Cool thanks Trixxy. Noted that down..now i can id that type at least. Purple / brown spore print on those ones too so i think this looks pretty close:
hypholoma aurantiaca - (apparently it was moved from stropharia to hypholoma)
They report that these grow on wood chips, appear shiny when moist, have a purple brown spore print.
Its also said that these ARE active, however along with psilocybin there is other toxins that give you the runs. They are in the bin, I have the pics of them and i happy to wait till i find something better rather than trip and crap myself and feel shitty for a few days lol.
Lots more rain today, so see how things look tomorrow.

So many names for the same thing :P.
Tomorrow I have a few ideas for places to look. dont really mind if i find actives or just inactives, im not 100% sure i want to trip yet. Curiosity is there, and i think i have a bit of a mycology calling seeing as how interested i am in just finding all kinds of mushies...I mean its amazing how many different kinds ive found in less than a week.

Going searching in a spot I've never tried tomorrow for some subs. Have several areas I'd like to check - some pine forest, some native plantation. I've only ever found them actives in native plantation before - is it worth chhecking the pine forest or will I find different little friends there?

WOOOOOT, Shroom season has begun =D
lol i love how me trixxy and ummagumma were the only ones on this thread until the subs started popping up.
but yer, that guy talking about cubensis.... adelaide grows cubensis???
if so FUCK. are they better???, i know there more potent but???? whats the deal??
about to go for a hunt, finally gonna take my camera this time, will have sum very nice photo's too post tonight =D
found a massive bunch of subs a few days ago, waiting for them to mature and drop their spores before i pick them though.... hopefully they will be ready by now =DDDDDDDDD
Oh and a quick tip to those people who dont know how to hunt. DO NOT pick up the shrooms, cut them near the stem. DO NOT pick baby ( bullets ), have some respect dont be greedy, wait until they are mature and have opened up to release spores.
Sorry about the lecture, my old spot got raided a few years back by sum fucking idiots, and i havent had subs grow from there in 3 years.
il post pics of my adventure tonight =D

I went out with a mate today, and found the beginnings of a good season. Went south, which was a change for us, and found a whole lot of actives, blue bruising and all, had them IDed by an experienced person.
Ate the first one straight, mushed with our teeth then swallowed..wasnt too bad..very earthy...
Second put on a sandwich with spaghetti bolognase, which was horrible, the texture was bad..better to get it over with in one swallow.
I had only one visual, i had a lollipop i had bought in hahndorf and it looked normal chuppa chup size. But when i unwrapped it it seemed so small...like it wasnt even worth putting in my mouth...it looked small but i had a feeling that it was even smaller than it looked lol.
Pleasant surprise when i put it in my mouth and it filled it normally lol...
Very cool, not scary at all, coming down i got a few small waves of nausea but nothing like i was gonna throw up..just small feelings of nausea.
Next time I will have a bit more, very very cool though. Pics attached. Anyone know what the cluster of shrooms is? just curious, found a heap of actives, not interested in eating just want to know what those ones were.
Took about 30 mushies all up, some bigger than others. Left a whole lot. Will definitely be going back out in the coming weeks, as I would like to dry some out. All in all, happy hunting peoples!

Plenty of them around (amanita muscaria), almost hard not to find them in a pine forest.
Think there's a way to prepare them properly so you don't get too sick either, but i'm not sure of that method.

Went to an area in kersbrook, found 8 subs but they were all still bullets, and a few hadnt even dropped their veil, so I left them.
I still had some left from last time anyways lol so all is ok.
My friend and I are planning a trip next week wednesday, gonna try a few new spots that might be fruiting.

Iron_man...ur positive they were liberty caps? any pics? the red and white dotted ones are fly agaric or amantia muscaria most probably, they are all over in pine forests and such now, they have a different active ingredient in them than psilocybin, and as such most people go more for subs and the like.
A lot of places that fruit have subs growing, just not at peak fruiting yet.
Look forward to your pics

Went out to kersbrook mt crawford forest today, one of the horse trails (pine plantation with gum tree areas also).
Saw some of the orange ones with the honeycomb gills (sorry not 100% on terminology yet).
Saw some other varieties that i hadnt seen before...nothing active i dont think and i forgot my camera...
Next active hunt is this weekend, going to a known location. then trying a new or a few new ones on wednesday (next week not tomorrow).
good stuff....lol ended up forgetting the rail i entered on and walking for 3 hours to get back to the road :P...good times lol

went out today, took only the large ones, took only about 1/4 of what was there, caps alone - 500 grams.
We went about 100m along and then we decided it was pointless continuing, we already had too many...so we had some coffee...was cool lol.
Ill do pics of my share drying tomorrow if anyone doubts...

How do you tell what Jims are active?

Hey Iron_man you can never run out of places because SA is pretty huge! You're kinda in the same boat as the people in WA cos there really hasn't been much rain so far this year. If I were you I'd go out hunting in the next few days after all this rain is done.

I agree with Mushie Patrol so much! When I don't find any mushrooms i don't really mind because just the scenery, the fitness and the social-ness of going hunting is so much fun! It makes me feel like a little kid exploring the woods again. And its always good to bring my camera to take photos of things.
