G'day all. I am relatively new to mushroom hunting and have been following this thread for a while. Never taken shrooms, I just like to photograph the different mushrooms that I come across.
Recently when walking through a paddock between Mt Pleasant and Springton, I found some curious looking mushroom that I thought was a kind of panaeolus. I was wondering if anyone could help me ID them.
Unfortunately I was in a hurry that day and forgot to grab a specimen to measure and make a print of, so information is rather limited.
Habitat: Densely wooded patch of self seeded natives, the mushrooms themselves growing in cow dung.
Gills: charcoal coloured.
Stem: Fawn/pinkish brown.
Cap: Fawn becoming more golden brown towards the top.
Spore print color: N/A.
Bruising: No color change was observed.
Location: Edge of Eden Valley

Top Post Crudbag They look like Moonies(panaeleous?)Not sure on scientific,s But field experience says to me They may be blue spot,s low on the largest 1,s stem.Pic,s dont show as much spore released around as Usual Although weather condition,s may account for that.Gill colour looks right for that age and Only fresher Smaller 1,s wil show a True blue colour.Have Also Good information of Magic,s NOT SUBS fm cattle Dung Early spring Sth of Adelaide.Moonies r VERY SOFT n wont except being picked into bags very well They fall apart EASY.Thanx Heaps for Your post Crudbag. Crudbag, I'd call that Panaeolus papilionaceus but it is clearly a different species than the P. papilionaceus that we have here in the usa.
The cap color is different, and less smooth. And the veil remnants are not as triangular as our material.
Somewhere in the world I think there is an active strain, you could eat that and see if it is active. Probably not though, but its for sure not toxic.

Hello Shroomers!
I've made it through to Mt Compass and it's good to be out of the wet for a change! I tell you that this has got to be the best winter for shrooms. The water just never stops coming.
I can confirm that there are subs growing in second valley. I camped there overnight and the next day I saw some while I was walking along. As I was leaving the pines I saw three likely lads coming down the track towards the forest. I could tell right away that they were out looking for shrooms so I asked them what they were up to. "Just going for a walk" was their reply. So I said "You looking for shrooms?" and they were like "yeah!". hehe so I gave them the directions to where I had found the shrooms earlier.
The day before was completely insane. I went for a bit of a hunt and found a mega patch. At least 100 metres long. There were pins and shrooms all over the place. I'm guessing upwards of 500 shrooms in the area, with many more yet to fruit. The patch was only just beggining to flush! I'll put some pics up for your viewing pleasure.
I only took 5 shrooms from that patch but I only had the balls to take 3 cos I was quite emotionally unstable at the time (my gf had just broke up with me via sms) and I knew my trip would be intense. Anyways I had such an emotional trip and I cried like a little bitch. It felt like I was pissing out of my eyes there were so many tears. Despite that, I felt that the trip was very therapeutic, I released a lot of stuff that had built up inside of me. So I decided to invite some hot dutch babe I met in adelaide to come and spend a couple of nights with me in mt compass, she sounds keen

Thanks for info pheral. What are these "moonies" you speak of? You say they grow south of Adelaide?

Thankyou Alan Rockefeller, very informative. Unfortunately I have been unable to find these mushrooms again. Although chances are I would not have eaten them anyway, due to lack of definite identification. I might send my findings to a local mycologist. If I find some more I will definitely post my findings.

hey guys,
been walking around about the last few days,
tuesday was through inman valley were i found a small patch of subs, ended up getting 15 but they looked pretty open, only got a small buzz.
today i went through kuitpo and blackfellas, didnt find anything, but as i popped out the other side i noticed raises in the pine needles, brushed back were big red caps, and as i went along found alot more of them, looking up on some sites they look and resemble 'Amanita muscaria' but not a bulb looking, very flat about 10-20 cm wide, pure white stem and white gills, had the red top, and small white spots, most of them were on the way out and fading on the outer to an orange.
just wondering if they would be good for eating or active?
ive heard of people eating them in NZ but reading through this forum never have i heard of people eating these in SA.. would i assume they're poisonous?

some links on the Amanita's. They arent poisonous, can make you quite nauseus though if you dont prepare them correctly.
I havent tried them yet, but I think I shall have to soon.
It seems that if you boil them and remove all the toxins (and active ingredients) that they are actually pretty nice just for eating...again, I havent tried this yet though.
Planning on going shrooming tomorrow  Ive been unable to all week so fingers crossed I find some.

Shit dude, boiling doesn't work. There is a process of drying, grinding, then infusing SMALL amounts in water just under boiling. Larger amounts can be likened to salvia trips. drinking carbonated drinks with it will reactivate some of the nasty chemicals in the fly-agaric back to the original form that drying changes... good farkin luck! Don't take this as gospel this is the old pain relief/soporific method. A 3:1 cap to stem ratio is advised - apparently.

thank god!!,
after 8 full days of looking finally got onto some. went out near delamere and was walking around the pine forest for about 2 hr with only 2 or 3 finds. about to head home and literately stumbled across a patch of 200+! picked about 80 and headed home!
just at 4 and waiting for the effects! yew yew so stoked will post picks of what we have left in a few days

Just to clarify, boiling is for eating with no effects.
Other methods for getting some effects are drying or parboiling (near to but not boiling).
Its all listed in the links I posted above.

Re: Making tea--I just grind up my dried mushrooms and stir them through recently (but not instantly) boiled kettle water. My heaviest experiences have been through this method.
