Identification pleez
    #10220747 - 04/23/09 03:28 PM (14 years, 11 months ago)

Well, the unexpected happened today on the Southern shore of Lake Erie, the 41st parallel.

:woot::woot:

I found a Black Morel, I like to call them Morchella angusticeps, about 1 inch tall near a cherry tree.

Life is good.

Thanks.  I fucked up the download to Photobucket and it came out small.  If I get the chance later I'll reload and put the full size photo in.  Pretty nice macro features on it.  Damn, I'm getting hungry.

and the plant is Vinca minor
apparently they contain vincamine which is structurally similar to Ibogaine.
later in the season those flowers contain some delicious nectar

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

I've also heard there's some toxic compounds in Vinca, though, so be careful about ingesting. I could be off-base about that, since its been many years since I've read anything about that group of plants.

The toxic compounds in Vinca have been used in chemotherapy, though, so I guess some help is not far off.

George Barron says we got Morchella elata for black morels. What the heck?  :confused2:

Morchella taxonomy is a mess, and has been for forever.  There are 3 to 30 species depending on who you talk to or what you read.  Here's the promised enlarged version:

Thanks landsnorkler.  Here are some pictures I took today and Friday.  Friday's photo shows a Water Snake that wasn't exactly happy to see me.  Notice the change in color on the morel.  It has been near 90 the last three days but these early Morels just keep poppin'.

but i like the way kuo put it:

"Nothing bad will happen if you use the name Morchella esculenta in a non-scientific way--and, to be honest, you couldn't make Morchella taxonomy any worse if you were to publish the name in a scientific journal and apply it to a certain brand of bicycle tire"

Attn PWN hunters: If you should come across a bluing Psilocybe matching P. pellicolusa please smell it.
If you detect a scent reminiscent of Anethole (anise) please preserve a specimen or two for study and please PM me.

Beautiful Morel MM, I would love for these to be popping up everywhere in Vic Au but are apparently rare as hens teeth lol I have never come across one in the wild, is it true that they pop up not long after fires? cos there is no shortage of burnt bush land in Vic:nonono:

Yup.

I love Kuo's take on mycology, it's hysterical at times.

The snake is really cute.  They must like morels!..

Thanks Art.

CC:  What I am attempting here is something I've never seen done--a morel photolog.  I intend on snapping photos until it is mature.  I have no competition, so why not?
