Yello. SWIM has stumbled across some peculiar mushies today, and was wondering if the good folks here at the Shroomery could help him identify them. SWIM lives in Denver, Colorado (not exactly known to house magic mushrooms), and was inspired to start mushroom hunting after his friend discovered a patch of shrooms growing in her yard. Rather carelessly, she decided to rely solely on her intuition and consumed about 1 tablespoon of the fungus, dried. She reported a mild, pleasant psychedelic high, with no negative side effects whatsoever (I consider her experience to be valid; she is a very experienced tripper). Since then, she has continued her experimentation with fruitful results. SWIM showed her the shrooms he discovered and she agrees that they are the same ones she has been using.
SWIM is still very cautious, and does not want to take them until he has a second opinion.
Now for a brief description (please excuse SWIM if the description is not detailed enough, he is not familiar with mushroom identification and terminology). The gills are blackish purple in color and separated. The caps are about 3/4 of an inch in diameter. The ends of the cap are a dark gray, but the majority of the cap is a tannish brown, which darkens as you move up to the tip of the cap. The stems are white, about 1/8 of an inch in diameter, typically 1.5 inches in length. When bruised, the mushrooms display no noticeable changes in color, only a darkening in the bruised area. SWIM is currently in the process of taking a spore print, so hopefully he will have the result within the next day. The shrooms grew very close to each other in groups, as you can see in the first couple pictures. They were found growing in the garden of a neighbor, in a habitat of woodchips.
And the pics:
Here they are immediately after being gathered (please excuse the shirtless fool in the background ) :

Washed:
A closer look:

Thanks all! By the way, these were collected 48 hours after rain fall.

Excellent. Are there any potentially harmful varieties that could be mistaken for coprinellus micaceus?
Just don't want to end up in the hospital. Thanks guys.

Coprinopsis atramentaria could be mistaken for them by some. Coprinopsis atramentaria contains coprine which causes adverse reactions when alcohol is consumed 2 hours before or after eating them.
They are definitely Coprinellus micaceus though.

Thanks for the reassurance, just tried a small one. Tasted pretty bland... not bad though.
I wonder why SWIM's friends reacted the way she did to them... perhaps shes done a little to many mushrooms back in those crazy 70s
Thanks again guys.

How did they react? Was it a panic reaction?

No, she reported an extremely pleasant psychedelic mushroom high, no panic whatsoever.
Just ate 5 more small ones by the way, I will keep you all informed on any effects that may come about as a result.

Yes, it is strange, but I trust this woman. She's very experienced (been tripping since the early 70s). I've speculated that she is simply experiencing placebo, though I would think she would know the difference.

Very interesting.
Probably placebo though.
Its possible that these mushrooms contain some coprine which would make it real unpleasant to drink alcohol. Its unlikely that coprine is in this species though, and its unlikely that coprine would be pleasant.

Good idea. It should be safe to eat even a large amount raw. Let us know what happens.
Also ask your friend to post pics of the mushrooms here before she eats them, eating unidentified mushrooms is much more likely to cause sickness or death than tripping. If she wants to eat random inactives raw to search for effects thats a great idea and I would welcome that type of research. I'd start with Panaeolus.

Yeah, I know, I've researched coprinellus. I suspect she was simply experiencing placebo, though because of my trust in her, I am still approaching these mushrooms as I would a potential psychedelic, even though I agree with Beege's ID. Unfortunately, I have not experienced any effects that can be clearly discernible from placebo. But on the bright side, I at least have some strange edible mushrooms for tomorrow nights dinner!

Yea, fry them up and feed them to the lady, maybe she is slightly allergic to them or something.
They are the most common mushroom out there now, and lots of people have eaten them raw so I'd be surprised if its an unknown psychedelic. But you can have fun feeding them to your friends, tell them someone else tripped on them but the experts claim that they are inactive, get a few second opinions.
Most people underestimate the effects of placebo, it really does work. Double blind studies have shown measurable health improvements from taking sugar pills that the people believe is some new medicine.
If anything can induce a strong placebo reaction its wild mushrooms that you don't really know what they are. The neurochemicals released by eating something dangerous like that will surely get someone real high.

I just stumbled across a picture of galerina marginata, and I'm a little concerned. It looks pretty similar to my little friends: http://i274.photobucket.com/albums/jj278/SledHead40/galerina_marginata2.jpg
What do you guys think?

Yes, but I've read that galerina marginata can take up to 6 days to take affect.
