Are Pennington Wintergrazer 70 Rye berries ok to us?

Hi, long time reader first time poster. My friend was thinking about giving this whole mushroom cultivation thing a shot, and he has access to a few 50 lb bags of Pennington WinterGrazer 70 rye berries. Are these berries acceptable to use as a substrate ala 'organic' berries and whatnot?
