New Zealand Season 2009
    #10185352 - 04/17/09 03:05 PM (7 months, 1 day ago)

Found these in my garden this morning. I'm pretty certain of they are psilocybe subaeruginosa but I've only ever hunted weraroa noveazelandiae. So I'd love a postive id before I become that weirdo watering his garden at night.

That guy on the right is suspect. He's what usually grows in my garden which is why I never took a serious look last year.

I know it's a tiny start but it's a start.
Good hunting everyone!

I can't tell for sure about that red one, but with the print and the bruising on the stems...that top one looks awfully promising

Because, at my green stage in hunting, I love heaps of details I reckon others might be keen to know too. I've found two clusters growing in my garden in 2 places about 1m apart; divided by grass. One is a drift wood based mulch (many inches deep) The other used to be aswell but we converted it to a flower garden with compost and cocobean husks. Which is an amazing mulch but I don't think it had anything to do with these mycelia. Makes your garden smell like chocolate!

Both beds have been dry for exactly one week. Heaps of dew in the mornings but no frost since early last week. The last night was cold as but the couple before were mild enough to be outside in shorts.

I reckon a week after Monday's rains (27th) we'll be seeing alot of posts.

Most of the pics you posted are Psilocybe subaeruginosa, the red one in the last pic is Leratiomyces ceres.  Its presence is a good indicator that the habitat is good for other wood chip mushrooms such as the active Psilocybes.

Congratulations on making the first find from NZ this year!

Approximately where in NZ are you located?

Thanks Alan, I've had my shroom googles on for weeks. Didn't think I'd find them so close to home, pretty chuffed.

Other than the obvious red lera ceres, thanks for that info. Was any of these others suspect?

Sorry it's a bit blurred but this is the mulch.

To answer your question Wellington Region.

Mean!  Looking good, I've been out hunting the last few weekends and scouting areas but no luck yet.

Too much good weather still, this coming week is meant to bring a little moisture but you're right, the week after should be when it starts.  What suburb in Wellington are you in?  Have you watered that garden a lot recently?

Only this morning actually cuz I never thought to look here. Especially since it's been so dry.

I'm a ways N or Wellington but not too far like say Levin. Somewhere in there. Same weather, less wind.

Nice finds with the subs dude!
I've been keeping my eyes out up in Auckland but I haven't done enough travelling to find the right spots. I'm guessing within the month we'll be finding them here and there if we're lucky. Bought myself some new LED torches, and hopefully moving out to the Waitakeres very soon! Should be a great years haul!

First miserably wet day in Wellington today!

Let's hope it keeps up for at least tonight and tomorrow...

I've been trying find a timeline for P.sub growth but I can't fine anything interms of time. Is it a week from pinhead to full cap, ball park?

The subs I've found are all so small I'm wondering how long I should wait before I start picking? Should I be watering them, caring for them, singing to them off key?

Here are two images taken of the same specimen in it's natural habitat after one week of growth!

To my surprise, a friend has found a nice collection of subs here in Christchurch. The season has hardly begun really, considering we have had below average rainfall for April so far. Though this batch was old and starting to degrade, so these must of popped up from the heavy rainfall 2 weeks back.
