16 Arrested in Southeast DC Drug Raid [DC]

16 Arrested in Southeast DC Drug Raid

(WASHINGTON, D.C.) - D.C. Police and drug enforcement agents raided a neighborhood today that's infamous for its open air drug market.

Police executed 16 search warrants and made 20 arrests of suspects for numerous offenses, including distribution and possession of crack cocaine, heroin, PCP, and marijuana and cocaine, and seized drugs with a street value in excess of $10,000.

Police say the warrants were for 16 homes in one complex which were selling drugs. The raid went down in a three-hour period on Woodland Terrace in Southeast. Investigators say the drug operation has brought down the neighborhood for far too long.

On Thursday, the tables were turned.

"The residents have said loud and clear that our neighborhood should be as safe as any neighborhood in the District of Columbia," said Mayor Adrian Fenty. "Today's arrests take this neighborhood a significant step forward."

Drug activity has thrived in this neighborhood. The so-called 'take down' is the third there since 2008. Police say an organized network of drug dealers work the courtyards and street corners, selling out of homes.

"To have 16 different search warrants from 16 different residences involved in distribution of drugs-- it shows the level of coordination and cooperation among the people selling in neighborhood," said Chief Cathy Lanier.

Law enforcement officials hope Thursday's raids will help return the streets to the kids and families who live in fear.

"What motivates us is just what you see around-- a bunch of children playing on the street who should not have to live with this type of activity going on," said U.S. Attorney Jeff Taylor.

During the raid, the suspects are corralled and handcuffed as kids looked on. Police say from here, they will follow the trail of PCP, heroin, cocaine and marijuana.

"This investigation actually will take out suppliers," Lanier said. "As indicated by the DEA there is more to this type of takedown. It's designed to dismantle the traffic that comes into the area. There is absolutely no reason why they should be subjected to an open air drug market. "

If the cops are saying this was a $10,000 dollar seizure you know this whole thing is a joke.

Probably two joints and an X pill which contained "Heroin, crack, pcp, cocaine, and the devil."

DC is fucked up, it's not gonna change even if they do manage to take a few suppliers out of the equation.

That says it all right there...I am from Southeast DC, and have been to this block plenty of times, it's not going anywhere.  They have had "3 major raids" in less than a year...yet there is still plenty of Crack,Heroin, and PCP available 24/7, 365 in this same exact location.  They didn't put the tiniest dent in the drug game.  Hell the mayor of DC was even smoking crack with hookers and got re-elected.  DC is crack city, there is no government or police force that will be able to change that.

It's a waste of my tax money, and it's just a lost cause.
