Newbie here. I live in the woods, with a ton of acres all around me. I went searching, and found so many different kinds of shrooms but am afraid to try them. How is it that everyone seems so confident in picking and eating? Is there a great book or something I should be checking with? Is it just experience so many of you have, or am I unjustifiably worried I will get the wrong kind? Just tryin to stay alive here.

Please do not 'try' them! Never eat a mushroom you do not know 100% of what type it is.

Well, That fear you possess is the closest thing to wisdom you have without experience.
There's really no reason you should ever try the mushrooms you find in the woods.
May I respectfully direct you to the cultivation forum? If eating mushrooms is your yen, then starting as a hunter may ultimately be your yang, Am I being yin enough?
As you cultivate, (and I recommend "the mushroom cultivator" as a guide read a bit about mycology and identification.) Don't rush things, you must realize, you never really know what your doing, you just get better and better, and among your peers of similar interest, you might one day find a common bond of understanding. In time you'll learn to be safe and keep others safe.
Maybe just learn mushrooms one at a time.... but if you're going to eat them, you should be learning by groups, families, genera, habits, etc.
When i go walking with friends I point out mushrooms, their scientific names, edibility, known toxins, antidotes, families. ETC. To the point of being irritating.

You should get a mushroom identification book, then you can take spore prints and try to identify mushrooms. You can also post your finds here with pictures and descriptions to get help with identification as you'll quickly start to learn the different genus and species of mushrooms that grow in your area. It's helpful to go out looking for specific mushrooms in specific habitats, but if just looking or any and all mushrooms take a few specimens home and make some spore prints.

just start one shroom at a time, get a full description and pics, bring that here and find out its name.
learn the names of your friends and enemies. if your looking for actives or edibles, find a few that grow in your area and search for them. it is not a easy quick process to become an experienced picker, and i must say dont eat anything unless its id'd by an experienced picker!

Even with books I misidentify all the time. Some just have it and some don't.
Just take pictures, print them, and post in here.
Remember this too. There is NO cure/antidote for mushroom poisoning.
Good Luck

Except for muscarine poisoning from some inocybes and clitocybes.
the antidote is atropine.

I had no idea that some of the species had an antidote.
Thanks for sharing that. I'll be sure to not say that ANY mushroom doesn't have a treatment/antidote.
Thanks for setting me straight.

Thank you for your comments. I am seeing a world that I never knew exsisted right under my feet! This is fun, but very overwhelming. I will take your advice. Now, I get to look up some "dirty" little mushrooms to know what the heck some of you were saying.
