Today's hike - Cruentomycena viscidocruenta + others
    #10091903 - 04/02/09 03:32 AM (4 years, 1 month ago)

These photographs cost me some nasty leech bites and a pair of hiking pants that were consequently stained with blood. :frown:

The pretty little red ones are (Cruento)Mycena viscidocruenta as identified by Alan Rockefeller in my other thread. Hope I spelled that correctly.

The one that looks like a flower (and smells like sewerage) is Aseroƫ rubra.

The others I'd don't know about. Maybe someone can help. The funky translucent-looking little yellow one on the log could be Pholiota sp. (?) It's my favorite photo.

I'm attempting to make some spore-prints right now. The little things are so fragile, and the weather was so wet, it's making things quite hard, especially to keep them as sterile as possible. Anyway, I'm doing my best and you can see the photo of some prints in progress. I also pinched a bit of bark that was colonized with mycelium and dropped it into one of my spare grain-jars.

Thanks.

I've gone and put the caps on milky-white plastic for the spore-prints not realizing that the spores are white. Bah. For some reason I expected them to be pinkish or red.

Hey man nice photos!

Those little viscidocruenta look great! They always make great shots when the caps are wet and shiny.

The second yellow one (on it's own) is def. Cyptotrama asprata..

I think i figured out what the confusion is (this and another thread). I think that solitary one you have a shot there (and the ones to the left of the log in the other thread) are all C. asprata. The ones on the RIGHT of the log in the other thread are the Pholiotas. Two similar yellow mushrooms fruiting off the same log is my bet.

You can find out for sure by printing those suckers! C. asprata will be white, Pholiota will be brown.

P.S. good luck with the cultivation! I had little luck with the mycenas because they're so fragile and the caps shrivel up quite quickly and then you lose the print. What other ones are you trying?

Thanks!

The Mycena is the only one I'm trying right now.

I've taken a print of the yellow "spikey" mushroom before (in that picture in the other thread). The spore print was white, so I guess you got it!

The reason I got confused with Pholiota is because when I do a google image search, I get a bunch of sort-of-similar looking spikey yellow mushrooms...

Yeah ... i actually think that they might all be A. cyptotrama now, although i'd be interested if those ones on the right of that log did print different, i haven't seen them that wavy before and they do look similar to photos of Pholiota on the net.

Well, just going from a quick bit of reading and some image-searches, I think you're well on the right track anyway!

I don't want to toot my own horn, but I love how the photo turned out. Not sure what happened there, but it almost looks like the mushroom is glowing from inside. I think it must have been the sun lighting it up from the other side and giving it an almost translucent look...

Yeah it's like it's lit up like a Chinese lantern or something... keep them coming!

P.S. I notice some nice moss in those viscidocruenta shots.. is there much of an area near you with creek beds and lots of moss on rocks?

If so, keep watch for Hygrocybes over the next few months, they're my favourite mushroom and that's their favourite habitat. In fact, to confuse things a little bit MORE, i wouldn't be surprised if some of the susp. viscidocruenta you see aren't actually Hygrocybe miniata.. because they're very common in that habitat, now is their season, and they look very similar.

I will keep an eye out.

I like to hike around in lots of places, this one is near my brother's place and yeah, there's a fair bit of mossy rocks and stuff around. I'm going out into the mountains around Wollombi national park over the weekend (and it's been raining there), so hopefully I'll be able to find something else interesting over the next few days.

Thanks for the encouragement and the interest. I haven't posted in years, but my "non active" threads don't usually get much interest. Hehe.

Good luck on the w/e man! My tip is it's still too warm but you never know what you might find.. tempted myself to do a hunt tomorrow after uni, i already need to go to Penrith for a show, not a lot further to just keep climbing.. and i could do with a feed of saffron milk caps! i'm sure they must be all over the place up there right now.

undergrounder got it right, that one is Cyptotrama asprata and the pic before it is a Pholiota sp.

How did the leeches get you, do they drop out of trees or something?

Thats ok.  I usually do stuff like this on foil though, its visible on there and easy to get the spores off.

The leeches crawled up my pants and sucked on around my lower legs. I only found them when I rolled up my pant-legs and found the little bastards, swollen up from a good feed. I think they put something in your blood to make it very liquid and after I got them off, it bled everywhere and wouldn't stop for about an hour.

Regarding the prints, I'm doing my best, but don't hold your breath. Like I said, they're so teeny I just can't imagine them dropping anything substantial.

We'll see soon enough though.

...hold the phone. Good news, I just checked and I've got some very small, but quite nice little spore prints for you. As sterile as possible considering the circumstances.

PM me your postal address and I'll shoot them off today.
