She liked it. We tried several different movements yesterday, and of course the pure effectiveness of the work was mind boggling to us both especially cardio wise.

It won't take me but a few weeks to develop perfect form and then I'll have to move up in weight, not sure about her.

Glad to hear it was a good time for you whattheheck :thumbup:  The beginnings of another addict have arisen!  Here's the log for my Heavy workout today:


Mon 3/30/09  (Heavy Day)

Warmup:
-Halos 3x20 @ 16kg
-Squats 3x12 @ 24kg

Presses:
-4x(1,2,3) @ 16kg

Pulls:
-120 Swings with 24kg in 6min (20/min 30:30)

Cooldown:
-Stretchessssss

I found a place in denver that sells KB's and they have a trade in policy. Their prices are very good $1.35 a LB, so I'm psyched. I can go pick them up about 25 minutes from my house.

This stuff is SO intense, I could never have guessed. I just keep going down, doing a few things, working on technique and what not.

I'm a stickler, a HUGE stickler on form, so I'm thinking that it'll take me a few weeks to get tight with this stuff. There's just so much energy moving all over the place, bench pressing it is not.

I do not yet own any kettle bells...


But I have been getting into pistols lately!

Have you tried pistols?

I can now do hopping pistols!

When pistols get too easy just grab a kettle bell like Pavel!

Does anyone have info. on making a homemade kettlebell?

Whattheheck - nice find, that will definitely come in handy.  It's good your a stickler for form.  Definitely going to pay off in the long run; I can't even think of how many "tweaked muscles" (you know what i'm talking about) I've had as the result of more reps done once my form has failed.


I'm soooo surprised at how much HARDER swinging with the 24kg is relative to the 16kg.  Prior to jumping up, swinging 500 was doable and I could probably knock out another ~200 more if i was really forced to... but with this 24kg I was hard pressed to knock out 120 in 6min.  My grip was getting worn and I was getting exhausted, QUICK. 

Oh well, practice makes perfect.



Mr. Al - I don't know of any home-made kettlebell ideas, but I'll do some browsing on DragonDoor while I'm at work tomorrow.  If I come up with anything, I'll send ya a PM :thumbup:  In all honesty, if you can manage to find ~$80, it's definitely worth going out and grabbing a single 16kg kettlebell.  It'll be all you need for a good while, and you simply CAN'T beat the workout it gives you.

Wow. This crap is INTENSE! I love it. Got the TGU's figured out, and put in two 15 minute type workouts. I am amazed at how functional it all is. I've always been into the bigger movements and explosive stuff, but you just cannot duplicate what goes on with these things. Unreal.

I was doing side shoulder raise type swings, and at the gym I could easily use a 20 pound weight for the movement, but with the KB it's a chore at 10.

I'm going to take these back and go get about 2.5 times the amount of weight tomorrow for the same price. I'm going to grab a 16 KG to do some movements with, but I don't think the "one size for every movement" is my cup of tea. It seems illogical by all standards.

And on top of it, like I was telling the wife, it's about 30 minutes from our front door to being dressed out & ready to work, and then the same going back. For two of us, 6 days a week, that comes out to about 80 full work days of time. Not to mention probably $5-$10 a week in gas, and $45 a month in fees.

So I'm figuring all of that in there too.

There won't be a whole lot of growth. For my body weight, I am already pretty strong, especially considering my genetic makeup and previous injuries. I have a CR diet, and it just does not lend itself to muscle hypertrophy at all. I'm down 10 pounds from last fall due to the way I had my fall/winter/spring fasts laid out. but I have 5 months to go at it now, so I'm hoping to get that 10 plus a few more back.

I wouldn't put anything past the results that these can produce.

There is an interesting fact about calorie restrictive diets. Their followers tens to live a bit longer, but they are twice as likely to become dependent on other people. Apparently they become frail and weak as they age. they also experience high incidence of osteoporosis.

here is an article about it by nutritional scientist John Berardi:

"Calorie restriction is doomed to fail, and will make people miserable in the process of attempting it," said Dr. Jay Phelan, an evolutionary biologist at the University of California, Los Angeles, and a co-author of the paper."

In the end, eating well, supplementing intelligently, and subscribing to a life-long exercise program may prove to even more powerful than calorie restriction. And you won't have to suffer the restriction, deprivation, and, well, scrawnyness associated with this approach.

After all, I'm assuming that none of us here want to mimic the physique of Mike Linksvayer, example of a calorie restriction proponent. At 6ft, 135 Mike is severly underweight (certainly a candidate for my Scrawny to Brawny program). Interestingly this low body weight presents its own risks as he ages - studies show that those with low body weight and low muscle mass are at a higher risk for a loss of independence into their elder years due to the natural losses in bone and muscle that occur. So Mike may be healthier than his friends now, but watch out Mike as you age!

And here's another interesting piece of data...studies are showing that the nutritional supplement resveratrol may work through the same pathways as calorie restriction to enhance longetivty. Check this discussion out as well as this one and this one.

So, folks, don't stop eating just yet. Although calorie restriction works in animals, it's not yet proven in humans. And if it does turn out to work in humans, we don't know how powerful the effects will be. But more to the point, who cares when calorie restriction is so difficult and carries its own risks including exchanging quality of life for longevity.

Why not learn the good lifestyle habits associated with smart eating, proper supplementation, and lifelong exercise? That way you can eat, exercise, and be merry while living long and living well.

There's other issues. A person who is vegetarian/vegan or CR does not necessarily have a healthier diet. One reason my calories are low, is due to the amount of raw food fiber I get in my diet. Sit down and eat 3 apples and 4 big carrots, chewing the food properly, and you'll know what I mean.

If I'm CR, or a veggie, and I eat prepackaged crap, or McDonald's (just in smaller amounts) it will do me no good. 80% of my food is raw. It's been a 5 year process as I have let my body acclimate. I HATE a LOT of the foods I use to adore. Meat is just now becoming one of them.

I come from a fat family, and for all of the hell that they caught, myself and my wife, who like her grandma is small and thin, get disrespected SO much more than they ever did. It's ridiculous. We live in a fat society. Period. And any research into where we developed such things as DRC and the food pyramid will show a lack of compelling evidence to give credence to any of this mainstream crap we've been indoctrinated with.

I agree with this statement, but keep in mind that ALL available information is mainstream crap...particularly with the internet being so dominant of an information exchange medium. One must use all available information to make decisions about their health from every available resource. Keep in mind that kettlebells were mainstream at the turn of the 20th century.

Thanks for the heads up on the books and the opinion of the bells Hue.

First, the diet. I'm all about trying things. I just ate at a truly great Mexican place. It tasted alright, but I've eaten SO much fresh food the past five years, in increasing quantities, that when I eat stuff like that, even though I used to love it, it just doesn't satisfy, even brings me down a bit. I've been really becoming efficient with my diet as far as getting high quality fats like hemp (I LOVE that stuff) and coconut and from nuts and seeds. I used to slack on this, but I crave that stuff now. When that's in my diet, I gotta believe I'm close to 2,000+ every single day, most days more.

And thanks for chiming in about the bells. The guy seem really cool and they even have a trade in program, which I probably won't ever use as the kids will move up through the weights as they age, but still.

Gotta take my youngest out on his date with daddy, and then it's back to hit it.
