I went down around Balingup on Tuesday. I scouted around some pine and eucalypt plantations. There was nothing growing in the pines but a number of inactives growing throughout the eucalyptus. There was a large fire in the area earlier in the year and it has burnt out thousands of acres of pines. Wondering if this will affect the mushrooms?

I did find some absolutely massive gyms but I left them because I wasn't sure if they were any good. Also found what looked to be some kind of amanita... but thats just a guess.

I did not come across any subs but it was my first time so I can't expect to find them straight away. It would take weeks to look through all the forest down there!

I made a patch from pine mulch at my home in perth last year and they sprouted a few days ago..so

I assumed wrongly that it must been on..

...IT IS NOT ON YET..(not even close)

Hey Jyubal were you there on tuesday night? I was camped in the Bibbulmun hut overlooking blackwood river. I could see a road down in the valley and a car pulled up just before dusk... I knew what they were up to. :P

Are the pines around Balingup meant to be productive? cos seriously I have heard so much good stuff about them but when I got there I thought I must have gone to the wrong place!

Perth is bloody dry! you ever have any luck within the city limits? I think Perth is so dry that the Mycelium can't even survive sometimes. But that's just a guess.

I live In the Perth Hills like 2 hours from perth. Im in a fairly rural area. Surrounded by native bushland and pine plantations.

Ive found a few different kinds of shrooms but nothing active!

Ballingup cant be the only place to Find Shrooms man!!

That's what I'm thinking! They will have to be around somewhere else. Discobiscuit I'm guessing you live around Dwellingup or Collie? I checked out Dwellingup about three weeks ago and there were some promising signs. A few different kinds of inactives around the place but nothing active.

I also live in the hills near bakers hill but its been so dry here the grass is hardly growing! :frown:

I am always happy to be told what mushrooms I should be looking for in a certain location by a n00b.
It was a pretty useless post, because if you look around the forum, you'll notice that it is crammed full with Auzzies and Kiwis exchanging informations about their finds as they are in high season right now.
That's first. Second, you should always give your sources credit when you quote something or else you will rightfully be suspected of plagiarizing.

wow maybe instead of a bunch of rule freaks from other countries posting in here we could get some Western Australians... just a suggestion.

Oh and you must realise that Perth is 3000 kms away from the other cities of Australia... but you're all perfect so I'm sure you already knew that.

Im personally thinking further down south might be good. I was thinking about taking a trip down next weekend. Were just lacking consistent rain. Its warm during the day and bitter ass fucking cold at night.

When were you thinking about going down Pepico?

I think we can excpect some rain wed-thurs this week coming.

I seriously think it would be worthwhile hunting around the metro area until the rains really hit the southwest. I've seen heaps of inactives around the city so I guess any potential Subs would be fruiting too. I'll have another hunt this week and let you know how it goes.

Thing is though, has anyone ever found anything active in the metro area? I've been finding all sorts of garden shrooms over the past few weeks. I think were just going to have to wait till we start getting consecutive good days of rain.

Its good too see we got a w.a thread ressurected.

I'll post any finds I come across. Happy hunting!

I checked that site out and it is quite interesting. But I noticed that they haven't got any psychoactive mushrooms in the field guide (apart from maybe some gyms)... I'm wondering if this is because they haven't found any or because they refuse to acknowledge that they found any.

its because they are not allowed to report findings of subs (publicly)

have a look at the mondong 2007 survey and i swear there is subs in there lol. also a few purparatus as well. solid week of rain coming girls and boys!!! the only way you will find subs in perth if is you know somewhere where spawn has been placed!

keep lurkin

I just don't trust wikipedia so would be nice to get another opinion.

Thanks.

No they do not grow on wood chips.  Just on dung and lawns.  They grow on a few types of dung but not cow dung.

Panaeolus subbalteatus does indeed grow on cowdung in Australia as THIS thread shows.
Although generally found in the warmer months of the year a few Pan subbs were found by myself a few days ago (I was much suprised by this seemingly out of season find) growing from sodden grass clippings used as a mulch.

Hey disco the rains should have hit that spot you were telling me about near your place...

I'd give it a couple of days of cold weather then go check it out.

Yeah true that. I'll probably check it out around Sunday. I'm pretty sure its supposed to be raining all weekend.

Went for a look around today in a pine forest and found a wicked looking mushroom
. Found a couple different species today. Nothing active but its a good sign!

You should check out my I'd request.

Later!

That mushroom you found looks really cool. Good signs

Had some rain out near my place. There are a couple of pine plantations around so I might check them out this weekend. I'm thinking the only thing that will be active around me are gyms.

Haha cheers man!

Yeah you should definatly check out those plantations. Never know you could stumble across some subs? I've heard most gyms are weak and bitter like fuck. You found any active gyms before?

Yeah I think so but didn't try them because of the bad reputation!

These plantations are not really that old so it's a bitch walking through them. you gotta bash through all the branches and some dude lives there so you gotta dodge him too.

True. Well yeah I reckon you should check em out ay. Just don't get busted lol. I was walking through a huge field today and I ended up getting chase by the biggest fuck off horse you've ever seen haha!

I'm definatly going back to the pine forest this weekend sometime. I found a fair few different inactives. I'm waiting for a few more days rain.

Na sorry, I'm from NSW.
On the subject of gyms, G.purpuratus would be one of the more highly sought after gym species. Its also one of the very few active shrooms in WA. In spite of this I've yet to hear of any bioassay reports of WA purpuratus material or even seen good high res pics of WA purpuratus.
In addition there are indications that there may be several unidentified gym species closely related to G.purpuratus in WA.
You'd still want starting dosage of approx 10g dry.

Haha! The risks we take while hunting for shrooms!

All those gyms grow off dead rotting wood huh? I guess I should probably look into gyms a bit more. Where's all this bloody rain???

Im new to Hunting too. If your just starting like me id say go and get yourself a Half decent camera and some Fungi books or something along those lines.

Dont think were actually allowed to recomend spesific areas to looks for mushrooms. Are you Rural or Urban? Check out the grass at a few of the local parks in your area. Ive found like 3-4 different species at my local park. Allthough i live in a semi rural area.

Other than that, just keep your eyes open and dont give up if you dont find anything straight away.

Good luck!

best thing to do with the cops is get a bunch of little inactive shrooms in a bag and let them catch you. they can put you through all the crap they want but it will just make them look like fools once they realise that the shrooms are inactive.

they are fucking with us so let's fuck with them back.

I would definitely do that if I had the chance. It won't be this year as I'm going away soon. but hopefully next year :P

I'm going mushy hunting for the first time this weekend, with a mate who knows a 'good spot'. I'll let you guys know if we have any luck!

hey disco you coming with me this weekend? or are you stuck at home?

I just went for a hunt in the perth hills and there are shitloads of mushrooms around.

I did not find anything active but I have learnt a lot about good habitats.

If you can find where Sheoak grow you will definitely find mushrooms growing.
It's a dry part of the country where I was searching so I can only imagine that the combination of cool, wet climate and Sheoak trees will produce the magic mushrooms.

No luck this weekend for me.

The spot my mate knew was in Balingup. It had been years since he had been there and we couldn't find it. We searched around from bout 2am  until about 10am  looking for shrooms / the spot. There were plenty of mushrooms that my mate thought weren't the ones we were looking for, but the way he knew identifying them seemed strange now that I've looked it up on the net. His way of telling was that when you pick them the gills change color to purple. Also not being able to find the old spot he knew, we didn't really know what type of area to look in.

There was one type of mushroom that was common everywhere that might have in fact been subs. I'm color blind so its hard for me to remember but they look kinda the same in color and shape to some of the pictures in the first post of this thread, but also similar to the mushrooms in this picture from page 4:
http://files.shroomery.org/files/09-26/583604890-Photo.018.jpg
They were growing in the bushland, in the pine plantations, everywhere.

If i go again i want to go with someone that knows what they are doing. I'm pretty confident that once I'm shown what to do i will be able to do it despite being color blind. Being color blind makes it too hard to go just off descriptions/pictures from the net. I'm thinking of driving down again soon while the rain is still here, so any one that wants go down to Balingup, or that is already heading down and won't mind some company send us a PM!

Edit: PS. Is it OK to mention place names?

Hi people im new to this forum but have clocked up alot of miles hunting.. Im From Perth and make several trips every weekend down south to areas such as Balingup, Nannup, Collie, Greenbushes and have plenty of pics that ill post and ive also had success in finding actives but not for psilocybe subaeruginosa which was my main priority.. The only way i know they were active is because of people that risked eating one type i came across which was pretty stupid but i did warn them..

Hi everyone,

I'm from Perth and a noob here as well.

Although for the past few months I have been researching more and more, and have gone out on several hunts. I've stumbled across Gymnopilus Allantopus and other specimen, but nothing active.

At least we know the Mycelium is in action! Heading down South this weekend, hopefully all this rain will bring us some treats!

Anyone find anything this past weekend?

i know gymnopilus purpuratus definately grow in WA, in Balingup i think is where they were recorded, & other gyms but they are the main ones of interest. I also read the cops are real arses about mushroom hunters there..

It seems that Subs are most abundant in Victoria, and NSW also but to a lesser extent the further north you go. They are around in South Eastern SA but not as common as in NSW or VIC it seems, and in Perth or southern WA im yet to see a P.Subaeruginosa find..

Im not sure if cubensis grow in WA, but if there are any farmlands that get any amounts of regular rain/watering with cows/horses and grass, then its possible they grow in warmer months along with the other dung species (pans/copes)..

POssibly... ive gone over my internet cap so i cant maximise those pics but they look like they could be Leratiomyces ceres ("Stropharia aurantiaca"). I just call them Strophs but the proper name is above..

IF they are Leratiomyces ceres, they grow in same habitat as subs so maybe there are subs around..

what was the spore print colour?

Yeh, that description you gave sounds like exactly the ones i was finding everywhere when i went last week. I wish i grabbed some so i could post a pic here to id them, just so i would be sure that they wernt the right ones. If they were the right ones then there are more there than you could possibly want.

Does someone who knows what they are doing know the type of mushroom were talking about?

click on pics, then upload them, then copy the code into your post. Pretty simple.

That certainly does look like a sub from first glance, more pics would be good.

Gymnopilus Purpuratus do grow in WA, it can be seen if you check out the Perth Urban Bushland Fungi Report for Murdoch in 2007 located here:

http://www.fungiperth.org.au/Reports-all/Fungi-Surveys.html

I also think I found a singular G. Purpuratus growing no more than 20 minutes from my house on deciduous wood in a national reserve. I will further investigate the area and report back

Hey Fellas,

Me and a mate went down To Balingup Saturday arvo with no luck. Im pretty sure we went to that tree tree farm place. Walked for a couple hours through the pines. Found heaps of different species but nothing close to active :frown:

The Weekend prior Me a and some mates found a shady source for shrooms, This bloke was calling them "Golden tops" and they werent cheap. Turns out they were Gyms. BIG ONES. Not sure what type cause they were all cut into chunks. THey were bitter like fuck! We ate Heaps and felt nothing. Wasnt even worth it lol.

the rains are upon us and the mushroom bounty is obscene. a friend of mine who enjoys the taste of psilocybin subaeringosa seems to think that he managed to find a couple thousand.

Looks like you could have Galerinas there friend. I can see a hint of rusty spores on the top of the stem in the fourth picture. The gills look way off also to be subs and no bruising is present, if that is what you are looking for.

yeah not subs, but interesting. The texture on the caps make it seem like maybe its not galerina, but either way not subs..

also good to see WA in action!

I have no idea what you are asking but it is probably against the hunting forum rules.  No one is going to tell you their spots, you'll need to put in some hours looking.

hehe Alan more like weeks...

or you could go interstate like I did and find shrooms all over the place.

I think if you wanted to find shrooms it would be best if you went down to Pemberton and spent a week down there just hunting in every location possible.

I'm looking at the lines of latitude that most of the subs are found on and Perth is a lot higher than Adelaide and Melbourne. So I've got a theory that if you go to a place with similar latitude as melbourne you will find shrooms.

Hey guys, does anyone know of any places in Perth that a guy could make enquiries, such as any markets or something? Just trying to meet like minded people who have more experience than I.

the folling is an article on the front page
I will scan and post shortly

South Western Times July 23 2009

DRUG PICKERS TEMPT FATE

Police have warned of the deadly effects of psilocybin mushrooms as a spate of arrests and move-on notices this month fail to halt people targeting the deadly drug.

Five people have been arrested and seven move-on notices have been issued be Donnybrook police as officers stake out notorious hot spots in the South West.

Donnybrook police officer-in-charge Sgt Ray Anderson said the so-called magic mushrooms, which have the active hallucinogenic ingredient psilocybin, were a highy dangerous drug which could cause permanent mind altering effects.

Sgt Anderson said the past two years had been reasonably quite, wiht only two arrests in 2008, but ideal weather conditions in winter had resulted in a surge of the mushrooms. Last weekend in balingup, three people were found with a pillow case full of the mushrooms, weighing 2.5kg.

That is just a snippet of the article tho i will post a scanned copy on here for all to enjoy...

Media loves to sensationalise anything they can. Quite often they plan it out in advance in order to get "rebuttal" stories, while sometimes it's just to increase sales. I learned this the hard way when I did an interview with a local paper in regards to extreme sports.

subbs subs. See, this is why I advocate using the scientific names. "Subbs" is the common name used for Panaeolus cinctulus (formerly called Panaeolus subbalteatus, thus "subbs"). "Subs" is the common name used for Psilocybe subaeruginosa.

ah sorry mate bout the 'subbs', i must have accidently included the extra 'b' in the word. hope there has been no more confusion.
but next time i may be reffering to 'Panaeolus subbalteatus' so dont make assumptions.
im too baked to type properly i think.

Those might be in the genus Pholiota.  It would help to see the spore print color.  Not active, maybe toxic.

Spore print color looks right for Pholiota.  It could also be in Agrocybe.

doesn't seem like they have had nearly as much rain down there as we have had here.

I still want to go down there though. I have to go down south anyway so I think I'll scout around next week sometime. Anyone feel like a road trip for a couple of days? I'll drive.

I've been down every weekend for the past 2 months, theres none at all left in the enchanted forest (appart from a few tiny ones). Alot of the grass is dying in parts of it, which has stopped some growth but the main problem is pickers not being respectful to the land. I don't think many people bother to put the bottoms of the shrooms back in the ground, and theres tonnes of rubbish floating around. The seasons not over yet, they are still growing happily as ever its just the main spot has been destroyed. The surrounding areas should still contain a reasonable harvest, and im sure blue meanies will be growing in the cow dung for the next month or so. Also the kangaroos in the area eat the mushrooms, ive seen them hunt in packs. Its interesting to watch, they seem to move in triangles.

i havnt been down for a month or two but im thinking of doing again soon. So there is nothing in the "main spot"? Is that the bit near that bridge and river? Thats the only spot i know, and it would b a long way to drive for nothing (as i have 2/3 times)

Magic mushroom doesn't grow in Spring time in Australia i think, it's called Psilocybe Cubensis usually grows in early may-june-july as they are called Blue Meanies they grow in any kind of forest like pine forest etc and for Summer it's called Psilocybe Cubensis aswell pretty known as Golden Tops they grow in cow's paddock anywhere at farm or country area you could find them in higher grass or either near cowshit or in it aswell

Cheers

Found about 7 of these today. My first find ever after hunting for a bout a week in Auckland, New Zealand. Had two of them to make 100% sure they were legit, they were pretty mean. Gonna have heaps with friends on Saturday

first post!

Anybody know where to find some info regarding consequences if caught by police with mushrooms in WA?
I've been reading through the "MISUSE OF DRUGS ACT 1981" but it's quite difficult to find the info I'm after.
Only thing of relevance I could find was "Amounts of prohibited drugs giving rise to presumption of intention to sell or supply same" - "1 PSILOCIN 0.1g, PSILOCYBIN 0.1"
Any help is appreciated!

If you can ever find a copy of 'Fungimentary' it is an excellent documentary on the mushrooms of balingup.

In that documentary people with bags of mushrooms are given a fine.

A friend of mine was charged with and given a spent conviction for posession of 3 mushrooms!

There was also a youtube video showing a section of 'The Force' (the sensationalised police tv show) busting people in balingup - two guys received a $400 fine and a crim record for posession.

Also some info HERE

hey i went down near busselton turned off onto the road leading to nannup followed that down for a bit and came to some pine trees i walked in and straight away came across 3 orange like mushrooms they look alot like the ones on the first page in the pictures but im not to sure im wondering if they are most likely to be the ones or are there other mushrooms in the area that look like them that are bad?

they are all different shaped and sizes soem are like a white colour around the rim of the mushroom and come into a dark coloured nipple

went down south on Sunday and searched all day all over the place but didn't find anything. Plenty of different inactives but no love, not sure if we were just looking in the wrong places or it's too early or what. Damn you, Slippery Jack, my now arch nemesis.

thanks for the reply dude. Yeah Fungimentary is on my 'to watch' list - it's on youtube btw.
Haven't been able to find that vid from 'The Force' but I've heard rumours that it's fake (as in it's some old fashioned propaganda).

Did your friend get a fine as well? How did they catch him?
I'm just trying to figure out the best course of action in the off chance I get caught with some.. I mean how do the police even know the mushrooms have psilocybin in them without testing? If you didn't admit anything would it be worth their while to bugger about getting them tested?

I know where your talking about and I think I'v seen the same mushrooms, was the stem orange and hollow? If you did your research ( gills/stem/bruising/spore colour etc ) you should be able to figure out if they were what we're looking for + I dont have a clue as to what the spore distribution is like so dont know if the subs are in that area :/.
I went down last weekend, things are looking very exciting but i rekon some more rain would help things along, they're definitely there though

Reckon it's worth hunting in Toodyay? Seen a tonne of tiny mushrooms growing in the bush but didn't care enough to check them out. I've never tried shrooms and decided I should give it a shot.

I sooooo badly want to try them... never had them before, but always been curious... I have read this whole thread and have found it to be fantastic!

My hope of finding them here (150km north of Perth) has diminished.

Thanks Maingy for putting up that video of Fungimentary, it was awesome!!

Perhaps there might be a chance of finding another variety up this way that I could focus on...  does anyone have any suggestions??

I'm not sure Toodyay would be worth hunting for shrooms although I am sure there are various fungal species there worth identifying. Find thick grass in wooded and wood debri areas in the south west near Bridgetown and north up to Donnybrook. When first searching it is important to go after lots of rain. Please don't litter the beautiful South West as there is regularly rubbish around that I am sure the locals, farmers and property owners do not like.

Respect to all of life

have been down about 4 times this season, not truly pumping like the last couple of years but still getting 800-1000 every time, i dont know what all these other mushies you guys are talking about are but theres only one in my book, the gold cap, have picked over 3000 of them in a few hours between two of us before, but this season is no where near that at the moment, the best way to do it is get a topographic map of balingup and look for good spots, pine forests , rivers, valleys etc where it would be cold and damp, and preferably off the main jays road and away from police, we just searched around for new spots and came across some massive undiscovered patches, good luck

Well done nightraider!
You have done so well to explore new spots, the land between Bridgy and Donnybrook after lots of rain can literally crawl with shrooms. I was first introduced to mushrooms when I lived in Margaret River river 10 years ago and have been picking ever since. Some of these years with heavy rain were just insane, shrooms popping up out of the middle of a dirt track only to see thousands in the area everywhere around.

There is a site, www.sovereignintegral.org, that is good to look into during a meditation. Also the music of the wingmakers is very cool to listen to for expanding awareness and for the breaking down of prison walls in our collective reality thus affecting the genetic mind of the human species for all future generations. That is why this natural energy field is important to explore and interact with because it can challenge us in many new expansive ways.

From a peaceful fellow,

Hi all,

just browsing and thought I may as well drop by and say hello to the mushroom hunters. I'm from Bridgetown myself and often wondered what the scene was like. I grew up just behind balingup out on maranup ford road but ironically have never even knowingly sighted a magic mushroom.

Getting on a little now and i'd be curious to find some around here and give them a whirl. I have heard certain rumours like they grow in cow dung and look a certain so and so, turn blue after being picked etc. But ofcourse I can't take any of that as gospel.

While I was fencing I came across some interesting looking mushrooms and it got me thinking. they look a bit like some of the ones on some of the ID pictures on here so yeah. No way to know for sure though.

If anyone is local and wants to come and have a look with me feel free to say hello,

Cheers.

E.S.M

thanks mate, well half the fun is actually finding them so we generally like to roam around a bit to undiscovered places, just have to make sure you dont end up too engrossed in picking and get lost which happened to us one year! have been going picking at night for the last few years, hence the name and find that they almost tend to glow under a torchlight, some of our biggest hauls have been at night, though is super cold and dark, has been so warm and dry recently that i cant see any shrooms around now but the next decent rains might see me go back for a look! cheers

Hello everyone, great site. I live close to Balingup, well at least 200 cliks. Am too nervous to go there tho as the pigs are feral about the truffles. I didnt know anything about studying spores when I got my first
bunch of specimens, in fact I was downright stupid and sprayed the spores into a mixture of year old chook poo and oak leaf desication and soil.
I found out about the horse tek so mixed a large amount of rinsed and strained manure into the soil and topped it with straight horse poop ( clean). I dont know if they will grow tho, what do you think? I also had an agar that had gone dry with pieces of gill imbeded so threw that into the top layer. Would really like to properly grow the Balingup type but have no more prints, I guess its rude and bad idea to ask around for a print. I used to have alot of chemical imbalances and Bi-polarisms. Studying spores really fixed my head up and I no longer need meds. How can the govt ruin the earth, take our money just below the threshold of taking to the streets and deny us the right to something to naturally logical. It really saddens me ya know.

In ancient times, when demons roamed with man, They hunted, loved and lost, hand in hand, As time went on, the difference between them faded. You couldn't tell anymore, demons and man were related, and some would say the same, but who would like to claim? In time, Gods had even forgot, Demons, too, once love had sought. In times recent I remember, Once I was a man, In my heart I had an ember, I'll relate the best I can but it was snuffed, one distant December. And yet here I stand, no flesh, no bones, no seed or semen, All that's left is this Demon.

Wow, some really dumbass people in this thread should be dead.

If you don't know what they are then you shouldn't be eating them to find out.

Maybe the cops do have to protect people from themselves by arresting em in pine forests.

although I get your point you can't be serious that cops have to protect people from themselves. the whole reason idiots like that exist is because laws protect people from everything. it goes against evolution to ensure the survival of the stupid. hence all these laws are just promoting ignorance and stupidity!

I think it will be a busy weekend.

Watch out for cops. They know when the shroomies pop.

ANSWER: Yes, small town not much crime. They know when it rains.

Examples of balingup/donnybrooks 'finest' busting shroomers in this doco:

Go at night with a torch. Walk a few KM to your destination. When you see car headlights on road turn off torch.

If you pick in the middle of a farmer's field in the middle of the day you will get noticed.
If you have dreads or dress like a hippie...more so.
Just pray a farmer don't shoot you. I know of a farmer in next town who fired a shot over his dam as poachers were stealing his marron!

As someone once said on the subject:
"consume all mushrooms on person while they approach and then hope its not going to be a long interrogation? "

Dont be disheartened!
I'm still going down this year, fuck those pigs!
And besides the cops hang around Jayes rd which is the main spot where everyone gets caught. If you just get a topographic map of balingup and its surroundings, and look for good spots on the map like pine plantations, vallys or places where its going to be humid, park your car at the nearest stop(not the side of the road) and walk to your chosen spot, if you look long enough you'll find something.

Erm, that is not good advice Mush313.

Sgt Croucher has been busting pickers a loooong time. No doubt lots of them think he doesn't know where shrooms grow ("If we avoid jayes Rd we will be sweet")

Be CAREFUL!! (unless you want a criminal record)

The rest of Australia is pretty much ok. It's just in Western Australia you can only find the shrooms in a small small area. So they cops scope it out after rain and nab shroomers easy as.

We just have to spread the myc out wider

These have come up at home in the last week after the rain.

Instead of disrupting a natural patch wouldnt it be better to just take the stem butts from the subs in your home tubs and put them into fresh soaked chips?

I know you'd be carefull but rural bogans get dumb ideas and take shovels to patches. Then transfer to the wrong area/climate.

well if anyone is going to take myc it is better to take a few stem butts from a patch rather than a piece of colonised wood imo.

Yes, it's best to use a knife to cut them but remember the mushroom is just the fruit body

Agreed, Stem butts etc...
Your suggestion is noted.
One should remove the fruits and not the plant.

Got it stuck in my head that it is an introduced species.
Like a weed.

Don't want to disturb surrounding pins by pulling up others in home tubs.

Planning on transplanting myc chunks from 3 tubs to multiple tubs after fruiting stops.

And hopefully after next week (visit down south) new tubs with new stem butts.

if your really worried about disrupting a patch it is actually possible to do the stem but cardboard tek without having the stem buts you can snip when you pick and simply use the stem from the mushrooms between cardboard i have done alot of experimenting with this technique and infact you can use basically any part of the mushroom
even simply placing a cap between cardboard will work any part of the fruiting body placed in cardboard will begin to grow myc from all over it
TRUST ME THIS DOES WORK (it has never failed for me)

i will say that the cap is more likely to rot a little and possibly do some harm to any myc growing from it however this has never completely killed myc for me it has always continued to grow without any real problems but the stem is the best thing to use so even if you cut the buts off when you pik em you dont actually need em place em in the cardboard and check it out after a week or 2 and i can pretty much garauntee you will see myc growing from all over watever it is you have used stems caps whatever

just thought id let people know for those who really dont want to harm a patch at all
good luck

Good or bad?  Found in pinetree forest in southwest oz, growing in bunches.  There were many more where these came from.  Thanks for the help.

Good or bad?  Found in a pinetree forest in southwest oz, growing in bunches.  There were many more where these came from.  Thanks for the help.

Nothing active. Probably a Gymnopus sp.

Just got back from Balingup, thought you guys might like to see what we found

I reckon we got close to 800 this year, not bad considering its still relatively early in the season!
These babies are now sitting in around 8 kilos of honey and waiting to be devoured

Thats a lot of fungi.

Just got back myself.

Was there for a week.
Managed to sneak away every second day for half hour.
Know of a number of patches that arn't on the dredded mountain.
Found a few new patches as well.

1st Pick
Looked like it had'nt rained much in the last few weeks.

2nd Pick
a few days later it had rained well

3rd Pick
A few more days later, They were everywhere.

Did'nt pick everything I saw. Left lots.
Made new spots so as too keep the myc spreading.

If you had seen how many there were in this one patch, you would understand why we picked so many! literally thousands of them everywhere. We picked only the mature and hence would of left about 3/4 of what we saw...

Some of the patches are on that road.
Others I've spored up in previous years and are in different areas.
Every year I make new patches, all close to water so the myc will survive through summer.

Mush313, did all yours come from the mountain?

I try to avoid the mountain.
Have been buzzed by the constabulary a few times, as I don't go on private property they keep driving and leave me alone.
Looking like your bushwalking helps, also carrying a camera.
I also hide what I pick as I go so if I get busted I have nothing on me.

Nice pics! If you want to make your life 1 million times easier, take some scissors with you and clean each specimen as you collect - it really doesnt take long in the field, and when you get home you have a bag of clean fresh mushrooms that are ready to do whatever you want with. Cleaning a huge haul after picking all day is not fun at all...

Also, honey is a nice way to prepare them dont get me wrong - but its certainly not the best way. Putting fresh mushrooms straight into honey introduces a huge amount of water into the honey (the fruit bodies are 90% water) inviting bacteria and funk.

Next time lay your shrooms out on paper or a towel, put a fan on them for 2 days and let them shrink right down before putting them in the honey. Thsi is best in a warm room with a heater or by the fire... Another huge benefit of this is that all the little mushroom bugs will die and be left behind on the paper before you put them in the honey.

Or even better, dry them out under a fan first then put them into a food dehydrator to finish off the drying process - they will be nice and crispy dry, and can be stored for months in ziplock bags.

Thanks for the tips! we usually eat some as we pick so thats why we leave the manicuring till after haha

And the only reason we didnt dry them before we put them in honey is because i thought they would lose their potency? also will keeping it in the freezer stop mold?

Yeah that wouldn't make it easy... But honestly man, when you put mushrooms with dirt attached to them on top of more mushrooms in your bag = all mushrooms covered in dirt and crap.. Take the 2 secs it takes to snip the dirty part off and pull off any grass before you drop it in your bag and you'll never do it any other way again... Double handling sucks.

You will lose very little potency if you handle them gently (the less you bruise them, the stronger they stay) and if you carefully lay them out in front of a fan in a warm room for 2 days - this won't dry them to 'cracker dry' (do a search on that) but it will be much better for honey.

You know when people complain of 'mushie guts'? This doesn't happen nearly as much when they've been properly dried... Id imagine its because all the bacteria etc. die upon drying.

The other benefit is you won't need nearly as much honey!

Dont ever freeze fresh mushrooms, this will ruin them. Im not sure if it would still ruin them if they werr submerged in honey, but I suspect it prob would. The reason is that the thousands of little cells explode (like a beer left in the freezer) and open up the contents to the air once you bring them out and thaw them, which oxidises all the good stuff and leaves it in-active.

Drying properly is by far your best bet

Well we've just had a fantastic rain so the shrooms should be popping up down south.

I'm yet to find any in WA so this may be the year for it.

I was wondering if anyone knows how the shrooms got into WA. Are they native here or introduced?

I was considering going further south to see if I can find some around Northcliffe or Bridgetown. If the shrooms are native then they should be growing in a lot more places than just balingup.

Watch 'The Magic Mushrooms of Balingup' on Youtube if you hav'nt allready.

Have heard they may grow from Harvey to Walpole.

Its up to all of us to keep spreading sub mycelium.
We wont have to drive so far.

My feeling/guess is that they have been introduced with the pine trees.

This doesnt explain their abundance in Melbourne suburbs though, so who knows...

It just seems like they would appear in native bushland if they were native, which they dont.

The Psilocybe subs are native to Australia. I have walked through 300km of south australian countryside and the most I found were in native bushland. I found the least in the pine forests.

I'm trying to work out if the shrooms in WA were introduced from the East. Or if they are also native in WA. Because if they are native here then they will be growing ALL OVER THE PLACE!

nice

you will not find them much further south than bridgetown
i know of people who go to bridgetown for them but any further south and you will not find them not saying it isnt possible you nevert know wat ya gonna find but your odds would probably be like 1 in billions

they are clearly an introduced mushroom wich would have been brought here with the tree farming industry in the early days even though they prefer the native bushland
and once you get further south of bridgetown tree plantations are few and far between nearly all the towns in the southwest started from timber milling however the majority of wat was milled further south has always been native bushland wich is then left to regenerate naturally and doesnt get replanted for treefarming
aswell as the fact that well over 90% of the few plantations further south are all private plantations on peoples farms and not government plantations on crown land
this makes it hard for anyone to even check around these areas without tresspassing on someones property even though it may not be the plantations in particular you want to search the native bushland around the plantations is still usually on someones property

so if your coming from perth i would not bother driving all the way to somewhere like northcliffe because you wont find anything
and thats a fuken long way to go for fuckall

You guys do raise a good point.

So are we assuming that the shrooms are native to the Eastern States and were then introduced over here?

The cops will probably be swarming around down there at the moment so good luck to anyone who is heading down!

Seems plausible, but again Im not sure that there are many found in native bushland over there either so possible they were completely introduced.

Another idea is that they came with the cattle, there is no doubt in my mind that the cows to a great job of spreading them around, that's for sure, especially as they graze cattle IN the pines! Yay for cows...

Unfortunately though the question of where these ones came from - will remain a mystery I think...

Hey peeps...
I went down a few nights ago too..
It was so cold the shrooms were frozen solid. Honestly.
They literally snapped at the based with a little pressure between thumb and finger.
The mists were thick and you could see little particles of frozen water drifting down thru the air... it was a beautiful magical sight.
I have been picking nearly 20 years and have never picked frozen mushrooms.
(i am sure they get frozen all the time, i have just never seen it)
smoked some dmt with a girl friend. awesome!!! watching the mist on dmt- streams of symbols flowing down the hillside joining a river in the valley below, slow lumbering transluscent creatures sniffing at my presence, tendrils reaching to touch my mind and investigating my vehicle.

The cold is quickly forgotten when you get the sight and your on the hunt.

Hey I'm not aware of any spots anywhere in the Perth metro area. Not to say that there aren't. But I'm always looking for fungus when I'm out and about and I've never seen any.

Hopefully if shroomerites start spreading the mycelium in to nice spots in Perth that will change in the years to come.

Unsure of the W.A landscape personally but do some reaserch, look for pine forests near a abundant water source, (Like the ocean). you can find elsewhere but from my personal experiances there are way more to be found in these style of spots than native bushland.
Edit: As well once you have located a few of these spots check your internet weather for the local weather of the area. If its cold and wet/moist most of winter there then you may find some.

unfortunately Perth is one extremely dry place! Especially the last couple of years.

The only places wet enough would be in reticulated parks and gardens. But as of yet I am still to find a Psilocybe growing in either of those places within Perth.

These spots are extremely dry for long periods of time with very little ground cover as most of it has been burned for firewood.

you wont find much if any up there. You need to head south to find subs. If you're lucky you might find some gymns near perth but thats about it.

Went back down to the 'B' town yesterday (Wed).
Covered a few km's along the road side of the brook, look like it rained overnight.
Storm came while I was picking and rained heaps.
Because of the rain it may be a good weekend for them.

I didn't find many
Searched for 4 hours, found mostly old ones and pins.

Saw 2 other shroomers and 1 marked police car

thats crazy! Ive seen cops at patches at least 15km from b town this year. Which is funny because there doesnt seem to be any busts this year in b town. some one was caught with some like 100km away but no report/ stories of busts in the zone. They are usally all over the news buy now. Its realy weird that the subs havent spread that far. They should be all over the place buy now :frown:

This time last year I was having trouble finding any.
Lots of rain and low temps has made all the difference this year.

Some more pics of subs from yesterdays hunt.

Nice, thanks for the pics! I had a look yesterday, some nice specimens but things are definitely not in full swing anymore, even after all that rain. Definitely worth the walk though.

Saw evidence of people in a place that I thought only I knew about, fresh cigarette butts and an empty bourbon can. The butts were still dry so so I reckon they were there a few hours before me. Please people, take your rubbish home - it gives all mushroom pickers a bad rep and good reason for cops to target the area....

Always depresses me to see the rubbish... :frown:

Just wondering what these ones are, found them in the kalamunda hills, the small ones show some blue bruising after a bit.
Big ones are a bit uncertain.

Would need more info on the first one (at least a gill shot) to identify it. The second is a Laccaria species. Neither are active.

Sorry to bump an old thread but the top pics in the original post are the shrooms Ive been picking during autumn and it's now 8 days in to spring. Is there a rule of thumb when these babies start popping up? Say after the last frost or something along those lines.

Last time I tripped it fucked me good [i posted here but still have no answer]and I wound up in hospital. I think i'll use a moderation approach from now on. Ive been meditating regularly ever since my bad experience however nothing comes close to finding insights into you own psyche via shrooms. Bit nervous though.

A southern adventure [Re: Stratman]
    #15050921 - 09/08/11 09:32 PM (5 months, 2 days ago)

We woke up at 5, struggling out of bed by ten past, and got into the car. First stop, Maccas for two Macdonalds birthday McMuffins to provide us with enough energy for the hike.

We travel down the freeway past Mandurah getting exited, not knowing what to expect.

When we arrive at the place we scouted on Google maps we find that logging has already started and half the plantation was gone. We started to leave and it has been spotted, the first prize for the day, but it's not of the correct species. We park the car and get out to hunt. After half an hour we have 8 specimens and after determining that they are all not what we are searching for we leave.

We needed fuel so we went to Balingup, and decide to run the gauntlet and drive down the notorious 'Jayes road' we soon discover why so many people are hassled by the police there and decide to do a drop and drive.

I hop out of the car and it speeds off, I'm into the bush- eyes to the ground, searching for my prize, it's after 10 minutes and I'm coming up to a farm fence that I spot the first one. It's too late in the day. It's too dry and it's the wrong species, so I collect a few and get picked up. My partner has found another location, so we head there.

Once at the site we spot two elderly people walking, and in the distance we hear trucks and the sound of machinery clearing the plantation nearby. I hop out, looking around and head towards the creek line, I spot an old campsite and decide to look around... I found an upturned van that had been burnt, this is why police and the locals don't like the hunters being here.

I find a field of specimens and take a few photos of them and the van. They aren't the right type but I enjoy taking the photos and seeing so much greenery.

We jump in the car and decide it's time to get going, we know the site and that we will come earlier in the season next time.

It was a fun little southern adventure and we learnt heaps about the area, and where to look.

On the drive back to Perth we see police getting sneaky and have set up a radar in a 500m stretch of 80km/hr on the freeway.

Basically no chance man, sorry. You can fruit them very happily outdoors though with lots of watering.
