Kids Discover New "Gateway" Drug
    #10012456 - 03/21/09 09:56 AM (4 years, 2 months ago)

Fox News

Doctors are warning kids across the country to stop "smoking Smarties" -- a fad they say can lead to infections, chronic coughing, choking and even maggots feeding off sugary dust in your nose.

Adolescents and teens have been crushing and inhaling candy, and then exhaling it, in an effort to look as though they’re smoking cigarettes, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.

Countless youths have even posted how-to videos, like this one on YouTube, of themselves engaging in this behavior.

Health experts fear the behavior may lead to harmful conditions. Some kids have already shown signs of developing a “smoker’s cough.” Oren Friedman, a Mayo Clinic nose specialist, cautioned that frequent use could lead to infections or even worse, albeit rare, conditions, such as maggots inside the nose.

The trend came as a surprise to officials at Summit Middle School in Frisco, Colo., in the fall when a clique of sixth graders started “smoking” Smarties -- a popular, disk-shaped sugar candy.

Though they call it “smoking,” the kids aren’t actually lighting a match to the candy. Instead, they crush it into a fine powder in its wrapper, draw it into their mouths and then blow it out in a cloud of dust.

The fad worries Corinne McGrew, the school nurse at Summit School District. "My biggest concern was that they would aspirate the wrapper or a whole Smarties and it would be a choking hazard," she told the Wall Street Journal.

The problem is happening all over the country — and Smarties isn’t the only candy of concern, said Eric Ostrow, vice president of sales and marketing at Ce De Candy Inc., which manufactures Smarties in Union, N.J.

“It can be done with anything made with sugar and compressed — Necco Wafers, Conversation Hearts, SweeTarts, Lik-M-Aid is already pulverized and so is Pixy Styx,” Ostrow told the Journal. “I don’t want to be complimented that we’re the number one choice.”

They name the brand, tell you where to find instructions, and say that people who do it belong to a clique.

^Noticed this aswell. It's the same thing they did with crack in the 80's on a much smaller scale of course, but the news back in the 80's had people smoking crack, pics of crack, how much it cost (saying it's cheap and high is intense), of course people are going to try it, now that you did a whole story on who, what, when, where, and why to smoke crack, you fuckers. Course not saying that smarties will get you high or anything but a lot of kids are fucking stupid and want to look cool and will do anything to do so.

Just realized this came from Fox News, the best source for lies on television.

Sensationalistic interviewers follow a pattern of provocation and interruption.

Similar to stage hypnosis, as practiced through the Delphi Process.

I once was a dumb kid too.
Though,
When I was a kid seeing this sort of shit would have made my head explode.

It doesnt bother me much today, but back then id get damn near angry about how fucking stupid kids are if I saw this kind of shit.  Though I was that kid who was a young artist, was obsessed with egypt, collected bugs, loved bald eagles, and rainforests.

I looked it up on youtube, and the results scare me.

I honestly am not sure if I would rather see that kid take a fat dose of ayahuasca.
I think that is probably a more constructive thing for a child to be doing.

I dont advocate drug use at such a young age, im just saying that any sort of real experience would probably let them know why this sort of shit is reserved for children that are more stupid than a child is supposed to be.

reminds me of a picture I saw in a book....A 9 year old shaman in training holding up his favorite plant, datura.
I wonder what that ayahuasca "tainted" child would think about this.......lol

He would laugh his ass off.  Thats probably what would happen if he was "lucky enough" to understand the "concept", or knew what smarties are.

Its all pretty sad really.

candy is a gateway drug, they should outlaw candy and then we could have candy dealers and candy cartels.

i wonder whats worse, obesity or maggots in your nose?
atleast the kids aren't eating ALL the sugar?

i remember when i was a kid and the ice cream truck had tons
of boxes of fake cigs that where made out of bubble gum/powdered sugar
they were very similiar to ciggs from a distance
very popular candy at my elementary
the teachers thought we were looking up to them

Whew!!!  I thought for a minute this was yet another mass media hysterical article on Salvia.  I'm actually relieved.

It IS funny though how the arguments are the same canned ones used for marijuana, etc., etc., etc.  How STUPID!!!
