i think the religion that kids make up is the best form of science that they can muster up, with theories they can explain the unexplained.

 Ive always thought of religion as essentially the science of its day. People's ways of making sense of the universe around them. "In the beginning there was the word" etc translates to today's big bang theory. Adam and eve eating the apple translates to our evolution from apes to a point where we're self aware. They were just doing the same we're doing today, to try and work out what the hell's going on.
That bit about children inventing the concept of God was the also the most interesting part for me, Id love to find more info on it.

...of course science leaves a spiritual hole that religion also filled but there's many other areas for spiritual fulfillment, great music for example.

God exists with or without religion. Science has nothing to do with it.

real science leaves unanswered questions as questions.
while religion provides goofy caulking in abhorrence of any cracks or infidels.

children can work with change much better than established religions, and the childhood cosmologies bend and shift as they grow incorporating paradoxes along the way, and infidels become friends immediately.

most grown people are not discriminating enough to realize that unanswered questions are part of honest living reality.

that is where something like zen helps

I don't know IF God exists
BUT
I know that some kind of higher power is interested in keeping me alive .
My life has been saved 3 times by some kind of higher power.

That's because you are special.

Or

Possibly the non-survivors of major accidents/illness are no longer around to claim divine intervention.
