Contamination or weak mycelium?

Below is a picture of a jar that was knocked up 6 weeks ago whos growth halted for an unknown reason. It was the only specimen that I had left from that strain, so I moved the rye berries and got some mycelium out with an innocluating loop to put on agar.

The bright white piece in the middle is where i dropped it. But its growing like smeared melted butter, instead of fluffy mycelium. What I do wrong? Or is it an Contamination.

Looks like bacteria, could be why your jar stalled too

I would say 100% bacteria. The grain was obviously covered with it, you can see where it rolled around on the agar is completely covered!
Maybe you could try saving the strain with antibacterial agar, or pouring hot agar over a grain etc...
Even try dipping a grain in bleach solution then soak in distilled water to try to shake off the contam. I would not say the chances are good tho.

YAY! Strain saved! I guess it was just that one little grain that had bacteria. I did a grain to BRF and VERM transfer and the cake seems to be flourishing with mycelium...weird.

I am sure the bacteria is still there, more likely the mycelium grew away from the contaminated grain.
Make sure you get a clean culture by making an "agar sandwich" (2 plates agar, from one plate cut a piece and place over the grain which must be on the second plate) over the top of the grain and then letting the mycelium grow through the cover, this will essentially push the bacteria off as it grows through the covering agar. No antibiotics etc needed.
