Linux?
    #9935172 - 03/08/09 05:53 PM (3 years, 2 months ago)

Hi all, as you can see im a new member to the shroomery, but a long time reader.  I recently decided to make an account because a lot of you seem pretty knowledgeable!

I recently got done building my first gaming rig, and havent decided what to do with my old computer.  Ive been heard about Linux and im a little interested, but have some questions.

how do i obtain a copy of Linux, or how does that work?
what applications do you use for it?
where do you get applications?

well anyway, all help would be appreciated. im curious to see how it works as i want to expand my experience past windows. thanks.

u might start w/ linuxmint.com .  the latest main edition is great and comes preloaded w/ lots of useful apps.  the is a program in it call package manager that installs new apps free of charge.  ask in this thread for apps to do what ever u want and i'll tell u what apps are good for that purpose.  btw, amarok is a great media player.

go download the xfld live cd here:
http://www.xfld.org/
see if you like it.
applications come from a package manager, that is included with every sane distro. or you can compile your own apps from source. I really don't know how to get you started on this other than telling you to start playing with it!

I would recommend Linux Mint, as well. Just go to their website, download it, burn the image to disk, and boot it.

Eh, I found mint to just be shittier than straight ubuntu.  You wont get a unanimous answer on which to use, but I would say to just go to ubuntu.com and download a liveboot cd iso, burn it to a disk, and check it out... the cool thing is that you can boot from the cd without ever installing the OS just to check it out beforehand.

There are easily obtainable programs on linux that can do just about everything a windows or mac setup could do, for free.

a linux distro is a release of linux, and will be your operating system, like windows is.  For a browser, use firefox, great on linux.  Personally, i dont' really like ubuntu or mint, mint was better in my experience, but nto something i really enjoyed.  Though, since your such a beginner, ubuntu is a good start, i used it first when it was 6.06...now i avoid those types of distros...

good luck

peace

Re: Linux? [Re: supra]

Linux, unlike Windows or Mac OS come in different distros. There's the kernel, which is 'linux' and then there's a bunch of utilities and applications. When they're all packaged together it's called a distribution (distro). There's literally hundreds, possibly thousands if your counting embedded devices and shit like that.

Personally, I've only tried about 5-10 over the years and really only put any time into 2, slackware and ubuntu. I would not recommend slackware unless your a big geek and just wanna learn the ins and outs and don't really care if it 'works' out of the box if you know what I mean.

Ubuntu, today, is 'the' linux distro I'd say. It's certainly the most popular (among consumers) and well known. Definitely one of the most user friendly and well supported as well. This is what I recommend to all newbs to try. It comes with almost every standard application you'll wanna use (web browser, text editor, music player, videoplayer, etc.) and what it doesn't come with is a few simple clicks to download (mp3/dvd support, photoshop replacement (gimp), office replacement (openoffice), etc.)

If it's a PC older than a couple years even I'd be surprised if all your drivers are not supported out of the box. Generally the only thing that can confuse new comers with linux is their 'windows knowledge' expecting it to be the same. Hands down I'd be surprised, now days, that if you take someone whos never used a computer and put em side by side if they found windows easier to use.

For all of your programs many distros, now, come with package managers. Ubuntu's default is called synaptic. All you do is open it up, type in the name of the program you want (google might help find what to use for what) and hit search. It'll find it, link all the dependencies automatically (required libraries and other files necessary for the program to operate), download and install it for you. Far simpler and less cumbersome than windows imo.

The only things Linux is lacking is games support, though it's come along way, but I just use Windows for that, I don't expect my toaster to make snow cones yunno, and possibly some Windows specific apps (CAD or some crap like that). Otherwise for a well rounded, home PC, Linux (Ubuntu) should do everything you want and more.

Haha, for me it was the exact opposite. I started with slackware, had to compile pretty much everything from source, configure things by editing text files. Took me weeks to get it actually... 'stable' and working. I actually think it took me nearly a week to get xwindows even working, it wasn't difficult, but having no idea what to do... it was. Now that I know the ins and outs I just don't wanna fiddle with it and just use ubuntu for the simplicity of it. You can still do everything you can and slackware, or... yunno, any distro, but there's easier, less time consuming, options if you don't feel like it, which I no longer have the time for.

I tried out slackware and didn't really like it.  my favorites so far are ArchLinux and Sabayon Linux, i am on Sabayon now, but i think i still enjoy arch most over all, but got this system working exactly as I want it, so i will probably just stay here...lol...

peace

Does Sabayon still use the same ghey colors (neon green, pink, yellow, brown, uaaaahh!)? When I installed it on my late Stinkpad about 3 years ago I nearly caught eyeball cancer from just looking at the splash screen. Terrible. Apart from that it's a pretty good distro. Personally, I like Ubuntu (Debian is OK, but I don't like the GNU/FOSS-Taliban attitude), Suse and Fedora for the "right from the get-go" distros and Gentoo for customized systems.

LOL@ Debian-taliban. I loved their response to the licensing of the firefox name+logo. What a bunch of little kids.
I love apt-get too much to use a fedora based distro, I think its far more mature about solving dependency hell, whereas IMHO yum can pretty often get confusulated.

What's the story behind the debian taliban, I haven't heard about that?

The story with debian is that they are REALLY REALLY serious about the inclusion of copyrighted materials in their distro. So, when that mozilla foundation copyrighted the name and logo, and left the source open, that meant that the source complied with the "debian free software guidelines", but the logos and names did not. so they changed the name and the logo to Iceweasel. Mad funny. Historically the debian community are pretty intense about keeping to these guidelines, and use it as an excuse to be assholes at most opportunities. that is the taliban reference.
Check these out:

I'm talking about them both, Debian directly funds the Taliban.

Check wikipedia.

Yah, the wikipedia says nothing about that, and I don't see how that's remotely likely.
