Hericium erinaceus, Pleurotus eryngii, and Agrocybe aegerita
    #9889211 - 03/01/09 12:13 PM (4 years, 3 months ago)

I'd like to share some current grows of mine of Hericium erinaceus(a local strain collected), Pleurotus eryngii (from a local friend), and Agrocybe aegerita (From someone on the shroomery)

All are growing  on a 80/10/10 alder sawdust/worm castings/rye grass seed mixture that was sterilized in filter patch bags.

The Kings and Pio's are growing in my Indoor hut  with temperatures in the 60-70 degree range at around 90-95% humidity.

Hericium is outdoors in the shade house.

Really nice. I think I've been making my sawdust bags too dry. My Hericium won't colonize it. I like the Pio's

I mix my sawdust mixtures by hand wetting it a little much at first. I then let it sit for a half a day and then check it again. I add water as needed to bring it up to the highest point of saturation without it sqeezing out too much water. Then I bag it. If you drop a handfull on the concrete and it say's PLOP it is probably too wet. If it breaks up like wet sand when it hits the concrete you're good to go.

Thanks for sharing, very inspirational.

Are the worm castings from your kitchen scraps? Did they have worm eggs?

They are from a friends worm bin. They probably do have eggs in them. Every time I don't use them quickly worms appear. I throw the worms in too.

Mine would have broke up like marbles, so I'm sure it was too dry. I was going off of some RR advice I must have taken the wrong way, as I THINK he said he does it to where no water comes out when squeezed. Also, my sawdust may be from a different type of tree. It's hardwood oak in pellet form. Expanded of course.

If you are using cold water to hydrate those pellets you need to wait at least 5 hours for the sawdust to absorb all the moisture. Not much waiting when the waters hot. The sqeeze test should produce a few trickle of water, not absolutely nothing.

Anyways, you should test you're mixture for moisture capacity and write you're findings down on paper so you get it just right every time until you understand what the moisture content and feel of the substrate should be like.

Happy growing
Lipa

I'm wondering where do you get your sawdust from.  i tried cabinet makers, but the use alot of pine and there is glue in there as well.  Beautiful mushrooms!!!
