Plug Spawn

I plan on inoculating a busted stump in my grandparents' yard for my grandfather's 86th birthday with oyster mycelium. Just a few quick questions:
Do the plugs need to be sterilized beforehand? I planned on buying a few dozen untreated, hardwood dowels from the hardware store tomorrow, carving grooves in them with a knife, and soaking them in water overnight, then tossing them in a tupperware container with fresh spawn.
Also, will mushrooms be seen on the log before fall this year?
Thanks.

You won't have to carve grooves, the dowels will already have them. I just knocked up a couple of logs with dowels I made from some oyster grain spawn. I used the search function and found some people sterilize and some pasteurize. The argument seemed to be that wood dowels are low in nutes and pasteurization is sufficient. I boiled mine until about 10% sank(RR advice)then drained, loaded in jars, and PC'd 45min at 15psi. Once cooled I hit them with a small spoonful of grain spawn. PCing might be overkill but seemed to work out fine for me. This is my first log grow so I have no clue on time frame. I guess I'm hoping for mushrooms sometime this fall or next spring. I think that has alot to do with the size of the log and the number of dowels used. I inoculated two 14" x 3' logs with 100ea 3/8" x 2" dowels. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

If you are getting dowels from the hardware store they probably wont have grooves, so cutting some would be helpful. Also, how old is this stump? If its more then 3 months old its less likely to ever fruit then if its fresh. I think stumps tend to take longer to colonize then logs so it might take more then a year to see fruit. There are so many variables, its really impossible to say. Hardwood takes longer to fruit then say poplar. Big stumps take longer then small. Southern seasons are longer then northern. If you need a idea of a time table post again with some detail and perhaps someone with lots of experience could give you a idea.

I just did some plug spawn. Buy your dowels from sporeworks. You can get 1000 for $13, its a killer deal. I didn't find a deal nearly as good as that at any local hardware store. 1000 is about enough to make 5 quart jars. To process them boil for about an hour, then drain, load into your jars and PC for 45min. I've also heard of people simply boiling them then inoculating without PCing... but personally I wouldn't risk it. When you inoculate you don't need to do it in a glove box, just spoon some of your grain spawn into the jars and they will be ready to go in about a week. Super easy.

I bought two bags of 33 dowels from ACE for about $5 total. I'm going to boil them with a pinch of gypsum and some coffee grounds for about an hour, then toss them in a ziploc with Phoenix Oyster spawn.
Thanks for the advice, everyone.

Should work... although if it were me I'd boil them by themselves without the gypsum or coffee. My Pleurotus ostreatus dowels colonized 100% in 4 days.
