Neb. Lawmakers Ban Psychoactive Herb

OMAHA, Neb. -- Nebraska lawmakers voted to ban Salvia divinorum, a hallucinogen that gives users an out-of-body sense of traveling through time and space or merging with inanimate objects.
Critics have argued that the herb, which is of the sage genus, should be outlawed like other psychoactive substances.
Supporters of the herb point to research that suggests it has therapeutic benefits in treating Alzheimer's disease, chronic pain and drug addiction.
The bill from state Sen. Russ Karpisek of Wilber makes it a felony to possess or sell salvia. Possessing it would be punishable by up to five years in prison; selling it, up to 20 years. A similar bill didn't reach a final vote last year.
Salvia divinorum is generally smoked but can also be chewed or made into a tea.
Salvia is known by nicknames such as "Sally-D," "Magic Mint" and "Diviner's Sage." Unlike LSD or PCP, salvia's effects are shorter, generally lasting up to an hour.

wow, you can get 20 years for selling it, when a year ago you could buy it over the counter. I can't believe this bullshit.

thats why if it is ever completely illegal it will essentially disappear which sucks even if you dont like salvia.

People who get high off salvia are going to start huffing glue. Great job, prohibitionists!
They fail to realize that people will always want to get high, and when you take away safe and healthy options, they go to unsafe alternatives. When authorities banned alcohol in aboriginal tribes, gasoline sniffing skyrocketed. Id rather have my kid not do drugs at all, but if he his i'd rather him smoke a puff of salvia then huff out of a bag.

Provided that I'm not causing any tangible harm to others, I believe that I should be at liberty to pursue happiness, irrespective of the health benefits.
I don't like this line of reasoning, in which people tell us that contraband isn't necessarily used recreationally.
How does spending 5 years in prison compensate society for anything?

I guess BBB will have to find a new auxiliary site to ship their salvia from now. Hopefully at least, it might not even be worth the effort considering how bleak it looks for salvia in the U.S.
