Re: Trichocereus id and weird pup.(Possibly a crest formation) [Re: inski]

I just made a few more images of the pup in this post.

It still looks a bit strange to me, could this be a crest mutation? the growth formed where there was damage to the original cactus!
inski.

It would be very cool if it were but I really doubt it being a crest.

I have heard that these mutations are caused by damage to the meristem, this damage was caused by a possum!

it could turn out to be monstrose or cristate, it is not that rare for a normal column to throw a freaky pup when the meristem was damaged.

like you said: wait and see :yesnod:

i think i know where that plant came from. its a T. riomizquensis. it closely related to scopicola.
urwotueat those pups will come out fine this variety/cutting seems to always throw out verticle pups.

Thanks guys,
I also find it hard to distinguish different species, the main differences I see are in the spines.
It would be great to have a thread with photos or drawings of the identifying features!
inski.

That's what durban was talking about with photobucket. Lets hope he gets that thread up again.

I never saw his images, I hope he can get the thread happening again!
I have another Trichocereus species that was identified as T. scopulicola , it has a more glaucous colouration than the above specimen and the spines are a bit shorter, I will post some images soon!
inski.
