if honesty isn't the best policy, what is?
    #981658 - 10/22/02 12:33 AM (5 years, 10 months ago)

I'm willing to accept the fact that most people lie at some point or another for whatever reason, but why do some people always feel like they need to lie? I don't think I'll ever understand it... does everyone lie? Am I some kind of sheltered fool that just grew up being honest? So why do you lie? To protect people's feelings? So you can do what you want without resistance? So you look like a better person? or whatelse?

I'm an honest person, I like to think that good things have come from it... Even in situations where you think the truth is going to give you problems, people seem to recognize the honesty and it can change everything.

I dunno, I had a better post in my head, but this is what came out...

How about a poll?

I usually lie...
So that I don't hurt people with the sad truth
Because it's the only way to get what I want
Just enough to keep things light and fluffy
So people keep liking me even though I'm not really who they think I am
It's a habit, I do it naturally without thinking much about it
I'm geh like Smack and never lie.

YAY
/me gives himself a big hug

I think most people lie, because they're just afraid. They don't want to deal with the consequences of hurting someones feelings, or getting somebody else angry with them. So they just decide to opt out and let the person believe what they want, in order to make thier own life easier.

So when you know someone is lying to you, do you just let it roll off your shoulders and figure they have a reason for it? I do that alot for some people without any problems, but when people close to me are telling stories it drives me crazy... my scorpio sting start to taking over

That's a damn good question! I'm generally a pretty honest person, but I suppose, on occasion, I've lied for probably a variety of both good and selfish reasons...

I think one thing I've learned, over the years, is that if you're picky about who the people in your life are, then you don't have to compromise your morals very much, but you also end up walking away from a lot of people... :smirk:

If I know someone's lying to me, I just mess with their head, pretend to believe them, and toss remarks at them to make them reeeeeal uncomfortable with their lie....
Once they think you know, but have know way to tell for sure, people start getting real entertaining to be around....

If it has to do with my money,I'll call someone out on their lie. But most times I'll just see how they act towards me,and I'll do the same thing they do to me to them when the time comes.

I usually lie because I feel the truth isn't good enough/ isn't what people WANT to hear.

Like damn yeah, I tapped that shit!

I had a roomate back in 97-98 that was a compulsive liar, I mean he lied about everything.. The weird thing was he was a really cool guy, nice, did well with women, and had a good heart.

I think maybe people who lie a lot got started lying at a young age and that its become some kind of hard to break habbit. I think they lie so much its hard not to when they get older.

I have no problem with small white lies that in life you may sometimes have to use to spare someones feelings or something of that sort.

Truth is very important, especially between friends and your mate... But being honest to the point of being too honest is bad too, I think sometimes people think not saying something is like lying, but its just holding back so you don't have to lie

The truth is sick, but ya, often lying is better because of peoples delicate precious feelings, which could even come out in violence. Anyways, it all depends on the circumstance, the person, and the situation, sometimes its better to be quiet, sometimes its better to tell the truth.

I feel sorry for people who feel that they need to lie. They obviously feel they're inadequate as they are.

I try to be as honest as possible with everyone. I lie only when absolutley necesssary. I wouldn't want people to lie to me, so I try not to either. I also don't believe 95% of what people tell me. Unfortunately, I don't trust many people.
