A year ago I made a few quart jars into mini terrariums. I like to do that and give them to friends as gifts.
Well anyways. i gave one to my roomy and she put it on her window sill in direct sunlight, and I put mine in VERY indirect sunlight. Her pinset was fucking AWESOME and mine was quite piddling. The yields were about the same, but you could definitely see the difference.
This inspired me to try something new with my current grow. I'm leaving the tub by the window, so it gets A LOT of direct sunlight. I'm really excited to see how it will go.
It probably gets maybe an hour or so of direct sunlight and the rest of the day it gets indirect as the sun moves across the sky. Do you think I should limit this exposure? It is winter, so the sun is a little bit weaker...
Dude thats way too much direct sunlight it should only be for 5-10 minutes max.

Light is only part of the equation, but very important, nonetheless. Don't forget FAE and humidity.

If you search back over the years, you'll see every time we've tried to give good advice on lighting, some moron would come in to say "if you can see your mushrooms, you have enough light" and trash the thread. I'm surprised nobody has come in with that nonsense yet.
Evaporation of moisture from the substrate is probably the number 1 pinning trigger, because that gets everything started, thus you could also say fresh air exchange(FAE) is the number 1 pinning trigger, because without FAE, there is no evaporation, thus no pinning, or poor pinning.
Upper 90% humidity is required or the substrate dries out too much, and primordia formation is inhibited. Once these conditions have been met, light becomes a major pinning trigger. This is why we refer to light as a secondary pinning trigger. It doesn't mean it's less important, but it means that other conditions must be met first.
Of course, first and foremost is full colonization, and once that is accomplished and the mycelium has consolidated its hold on the substrate, you want to introduce the pinning triggers of FAE, high humidity, and light. RR

Lennyk said: If direct sun is good for a couple minutes, couldn't one use a full spectrum bulb for a couple minutes a day to get the same effect?
Actually, I have terrariums in my nursery, which throws down 500w out of mixed hps/mh spectrum h.i.d.s. The carpophores harvested from these terrariums are generally much larger than those harvested from my laboratory terrariums, which only receive full-spectrum flourescent. The only drawback that I've found is that the higher temperatures of my nursery tend to want to dry my casings out more quickly than those in the lab.
