Mexico Police Seize $1 Million in Cash from Drug Traffickers February 3, 2009 - laht.com
MEXICO CITY -- Mexican federal agents arrested nine suspected drug traffickers on the outskirts of this capital, seizing $1 million in cash, weapons and drugs, the Attorney General's Office said Monday.
The AG office said in a communique that one of those arrested in last Thursday's operation was a lieutenant of Gulf cartel boss Arturo Beltran Leyva.
An anonymous tip directed federal police to a home on the outskirts of Mexico City where agents found the nine suspects "in possession of $1 million," two cars, three handguns, one grenade and 28 kilos (62 pounds) of cocaine.
One of the suspects, Geronimo Gamez Garcia, told authorities that he worked for Beltran Leyva and that he had spent the past 3 1/2 years as "the contact for delivering money to various people," the AG office said.
Armed groups linked to Mexico's drug mobs murdered around 1,500 people nationwide in 2006 and another 2,700 in 2007, and newspapers pegged last year's death toll at around 5,630.
Since taking office in December 2006, right-wing President Felipe Calderon has deployed 30,000 army troops and federal police to various regions of the country in a bid to crush the cartels.
But despite a string of high-profile arrests and record cocaine seizures, the pace of the killings has only increased.
The Attorney General's Office recently began investigating its own staff, particularly the SIEDO organized crime unit's members and the Federal Investigations Agency, Mexico's equivalent of the FBI.
As part of the probe, begun after a protected informant revealed links between drug cartel kingpins and police, a dozen high-ranking officials, including erstwhile drug czar Noe Ramirez, have been arrested.
The initial investigation concluded that Ramirez received $500,000 a month for sharing intelligence with drug lords.

$1,000,000 is just how much they reported they seized. I wonder how much they got for themselves?
