It does seem futile at times.
-------------------- What if everything around you
Isn't quite as it seems?
What if all the world you think you know,
Is an elaborate dream?
And if you look at your reflection,
Is it all you want it to be?

It's doesn't seem futile if you look at it as an exercise, a game, a mental challenge. Maybe that's why it's so popular.

I wouldn't say that. Philosophical debate sometimes serves to enlighten the debater or change his mind about something when a persuasive argument from a previously unconsidered point-of-view is presented. I think that can be a useful and beneficial result.

The MAIN reason that it is futile, is that (despite the fact that many claim to want to overcome the ego) ego will not let one change one's position, even when new facts are presented or faulty reasoning is exposed.
Rather than the embarrassment of admitting that one has long held an erroneous position, the ego will hold on to worn-out ideas like a tenacious pitbull.
This pertains not only to philosophy, but to all ideas.

Don't be so negative. While I agree that many people behave this way, I also think that many don't. I, for one.
Oh, and I won't change my mind about this so don't bother trying!

I agree that debate can serve to "change ones mind", I wouldn't go as far as to say that it can serve to enlighten (I guess it depends on how u would define "enlighten")
debate can serve to change change beliefs, ideas, and ping pong from one stance to another... however, it cannot allow one to transcend the mind altogether (admittedly this is all mental dribble since I obviously havn't transcended the mind - however, I've had glimpses of what it feels like be slightly unburdened by thinking)

To me it seems to produce little or no results. I just have nothing else better to do I suppose. Swami will probably never change his ways and believe in something discussed here, I can almost say the same for myself.

My ego demands that I change my position when new facts are presented or faulty reasoning is exposed. I'll be damned if I'm going to be some philosophical automaton regurgitating lies and half truths and positions built on incomplete or faulty premises.

I agree with several of the above comments. If someone considers themselves open minded, then debate is something they do IN ORDER TO CHANGE THEIR MIND, or not. It can serve me by either, reinforcing my ideas if no one can invalidate or offer different perpective. Or it can cause me to reevaluate my position. It keeps me sharp, challenges my mind, and it makes me a better me.
