Mushrooms growing in our herb garden - Australia
    #9717403 - 02/01/09 12:14 PM (3 years, 3 months ago)

Hello all,

first post here. Ive lurked in the past. Just discovered these two types of mushrooms growing in our herb garden. Were wondering whether they are edible (ie for cooking). I seriously doubt theyre the famed Aussie blue meanines ~ ^, but it would be nice if they were cooking mushies.

Hope you can help and thanks in advance.

This looks alot like panaeolus subbalteatus. I havent heard much about them being in Australia but it would be wicked if these are.

How do you keep up with the name changes dannyglick? Panaeolus cinctulus = Panaeolus subbalteatus

Anyways those are almost definitely subbs, as others have said do a spore print to confirm. Typically their low in potency, but are in fact active.

Btw they are reported from Australia.

Yeah, Index Fungorum has taken upon itself to inform us what they think the names of mushrooms should be.  Notably, two American institutions do not pay much attention, i.e. Mycological Society of America and their journal Mycologia and the North American Mycological Association.  Being from North America and all I give it its due consideration and still call that mushroom Panaeolus subbalteatus.

So the name still sits as Panaeolus subbalteatus in North America?

I thought when a name is changed it was changed everywhere.

What should they be called in Australia?:smirk:

Find an American mycological publication, i.e. peer-reviewed journal, that lists Panaeolus cinctulus.  You can't, and neither can anyone else.  Check out Index Fungorum's acknowledgement page.

http://www.indexfungorum.org/Names/Acknowledge.htm

See the organizations listed?

http://www.cabi.org/ (International)
http://www.cbs.knaw.nl/ ; (Netherlands)
http://www.landcareresearch.co.nz/ ; (New Zealand)
USDA Agriculture Research Service  Notice they are not a mycological organization.
British Lichen Society
http://www.rbgkew.org.uk/collections/fungi.html Kew Gardens, British
http://www.nhm.uio.no/botanisk/sopp/ ; University of Oslo, Swedish
http://www.br.fgov.be/RESEARCH/COLLECTIONS/HERBARIUMS/FUNGI/SURVEY/index.html Belgian
http://www.nybg.org/bsci/hcol/fung/fung.html ; Broken link to New York Botanical Garden.  Lincoff, NYBG's mycologist doesn't speak for the United States or its mycological groups.
http://www.nrm.se/kbo/saml/saml.html.en ; Swedish Museum of Natural History.

And those are the organizations listed.  The individuals are mostly from the world community with a few from here.  Rod Tuloss is associated with them.

Most of the resources listed when it comes to names is the British Mycological Society.  This mushroom is a prime example.  Check the records:Panaeolus cinctulus Index Fungorum listing  Click on the Basidiomycota Checklist.  What is it?  Checklist of the British & Irish Basidiomycota

Now, I don't know about you, but I'm an American living in the United States.  When our mycological journals adopt the name, I'll use it.  And not one moment before.

Yeah Kergan, it should be changed if you think this is a message board for the United States.  It isn't.  In a broad sense, it is international.  I just don't like the insinuation that it is the "official" name.  It isn't.  That would depend on where you live.
