I like the Dead but generally if I can't enjoy some music through some headphones or behind my computer then I don't really bother with it. I bet jam festivals could be fun but I couldn't really bothered to figure out when and where they are generally. I take psychedelics in too introspective a fashion to be naturally drawn to that sort of thing.
Maybe it's just a trick of fate that I was drawn to one scene rather than the other but my preference in drug-fueled parties is the rave.
I identify with hippies a little bit, but I also like to shower, keep my hair and clothes clean, and sleep in a bed. Not to mention eating wholesome, delicious bacon.

I like jam bands, I enjoy watching them do what they do best. JAM Usually 9 minutes out of 10 are mediocre music, but that one minute where they all come together and rip a riff you'll remember for the rest of your life is worth it for me. I am a musician, I guess I like to watch people do what they love and what I love.
Mediocre jam bands aren't worth the time though.
I'd rather listen to Animal Collective.
Modern day hippies are no better than any other click. There's always some cliche people out there though who fall into line because it works for them. I won't bother them they are usually nice people.

I don't smoke pot. But I do really enjoy psychedelics, and I don't relate to the fucking hippie scene at all. I think its fucking stupid.

I was just recently introduced to the dead and also attended my first festival last fall.
I have to say that I am a little turned off by all the cliches, but at the same time I'm so amused by them (I always laugh to myself when I see some hippy selling patchouli). It's the one scene where me and all my friends look exactly the same as everyone else.
In some ways I feel robbed of the subversiveness of my culture, but at the same place I am so happy to have found a place where I can be myself. Where I fit in.
The whole organic/granola/hemp thing is really annoying when it's used as a mask for "green capitalism".
Also, I was pretty turned off by how profit driven everything at the festival was. Whether it be drugs, tickets or food, everyone's trying to make a buck. This pretty much puts the whole scene out of reach for everybody except dumb white kids with a lot of money to blow.
Either way, I fell in love with funk music. Maybe it was just the acid, but if I can find a group of people who can be open and honestly, friendly and intimate, and who can get the fuck DOWN... then I've found myself little slice of happy.
There are somethings I don't like, but overall i think I identify pretty well with the hippy/jam culture.

I think I have a lot more trouble identifying with a lot of the shroomerites. There is just too much misogyny, phallocentrism, and even militaristic nationalism.
Everybody is always so mean to each other here!
I can identify with a bunch of dirty hippies. I can't identify with a bunch of assholes who are really just mainstream dudes who like to smoke and trip.

Shroomery's probably the friendliest Internet forum I've ever been on.
I'm an ultraliberal Frisco-dweller but it really shouldn't come as any surprise that rednecks like mushrooms too.
It's very unshroomy of you to judge people for their ideological positions.
Also, only insecure retards use "mainstream" as a derogatory term.

Of course rednecks like shrooms! (I live in FLA alright! LOL!) But just because they do shrooms doesn't mean I identify with them or their culture.

And see, there's that assumption that shrooms should make you act/think/view the world differently (or the same as other people who trip do).
I try not to judge other people according to their ideologies, but there comes a point where my values and other people's values part. Militaristic Nationalism is usually that point for me.
And sorry but the "mainstream" culture IS fucking insane and sociopathic. The current dominant culture is a disease and I prefer to keep myself as uncontaminated as possible.

Just saying, shroom users are a patchwork of people from all different backgrounds and positions.

Yeah, I was being ironic, making fun of you for expecting a message board for mushrooms should be a bastian of civilized discourse even though it's on the Internet.

I don't really see that many militaristic nationalists around here. Maybe a few. Not enough to identify the Shroomery with them.

I can see where you're coming from with this. But to call PEOPLE mainstream? No, no, no, that's bullshit. Nobody is "mainstream." Other people just don't question the same aspects of their culture that you do, and you don't question the same aspects of your culture that other people do.
Stop being such a judgmental prick is all I'm tryin'a say, because you don't know shit about shit.
