Salvia Soon to be Banned in Maryland?
    #9621170 - 01/16/09 01:04 PM (1 year, 6 months ago)

I posted this as a reply to a topic in a different category, but people are ignoring it... I apologize if this is being posted in the wrong place. Since my inquiry is about legality and such I thought this section would be best:

After reading several sites and forum posts about how to "Keep Salvia Legal" I checked my state's [Maryland] legislature/bill w/e database and tried to navigate the confusing site as best as possible, and I'm sure I came upon a bill to ban Salvia Divinorum and Salvinorin A. The first link takes me to a bill addressed to the Senate and the second addressed to the House. I'm guessing I already missed speaking out at the Committee level. But I don't know what to do now. The State Site is so confusing to navigate I dont know if these are being passed on or not. Any guidance would be great, I dont mind speaking out to keep what I use for a spiritual practice legal. I took public speaking for a reason!

First, thanks for your help.

People bitch, but the truth is these things are illegal because legislators do what will get them ahead.

You are exactly right you need to speak out.  People don't talk to their representatives.

So here's the good news,

Both bills have nothing happening yet.  So you're wrong- you can still go and try and testify or contact them before/at the hearing before the commitees(I would recomend before).

SB9:  http://mlis.state.md.us/2009rs/billfile/SB0009.htm

Hearing scheduled for the end of the month, date at link.

HB8: http://mlis.state.md.us/2009rs/billfile/hb0008.htm

It appears the hearings are at the same time.  I don't know if they have hearings before both the house and senate commitee's at the same time since the bill is in two different houses, but who knows.  I wouldn't be surprised if both bills are dealt with at the same hearing- why else would they cancle HB8's hearing and reassign it to the same date and time?

Anyways, good luck. If you want to get people in maryland to help out make it easy for them to find their representative (many are clueless) and link to their online email or comment system.  If you ask an adminstrator might put a global sticky up or you could find a news story and post it in shroomery news and ask folks to help out.

Thank you so much! I really don't want to become a criminal over night for having a large amount of Salvia and Salvinorin Extracts in my home in which I use for an entheogenic (spiritual) purpose. Please help me promote this issue and fight back here: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/9628089/an/0/page/0

Try contacting marijuana reform activists in your area, they are likely to be motivated to help you speak out against this injustice.

Definitely invite as many of them as you can to the public hearing.

You could also make it an event in the gathering forum.

If there are any local drug reform related mailing lists, definitely post there.

Contact everyone you can find who worked on the Maryland medical marijuana initiative.  There must be a lot of activists in your area to get that passed, and they will know how to contact each other.

Perhaps the people at NORML, DPA, ASA or MPP will know of some activists in your area.

Its really good that you found out about this while its still in committee, you have a real chance to fight it.  Often after a law gets out of committee it either gets rubber stamped or forgotten about and its a lot harder for a few people to change its course at that point.

I am sending out e-mails to these organizations now. Currently I feel like I'm the only one working at this. :frown:

Its hard for me to do a lot from California.  You need to get the word out to people in Maryland.

You could make fliers calling for action and ask the manager at local hydroponics stores, nurseries, smoke shops and plant shops if you can leave a stack by the register.

I wish someone would do something like this in GA, and other states for that matter!
It's amazing that even without the EvALl DEA involved, we still manage to lose legality of a harmless drug, state by state arrghhh...
Can't SOMEONE who is even partially educated in organic chemistry/pharmacology/whatever, come to these hearings and cite all of the positive research on it?!!?

Sadly, my pharmacology degree wouldn't be of much help. These people dont care about the science, its more of a moral issue for them.

They just don't want their kids to do drugs by trying to ban the drug, because being a good parent is too much work.

Looks like they have their work cut out for them....list of psychedelic plants

Dude, its far from harmless.  You could crash your car while using it!  This doesn't apply to jenga, text messaging, or combing your hair cuz... well they aren't drugs.  Only drugs need banned.  Cuz drugs allow you to crash your car.  And drugs aren't jenga, text messaging, or combs.

Some kid also killed himself after using it.  He mentioned it in his diary some months before!

5,000 American teenagers kill themselves every year.  If one of them mentions a drug then it should be banned for the other 300,000,000 people (which really means it should put you in jail).  This is not like other things in diaries of suicidal kids.  Cuz its different.

Get it?  Some kid kills himself.  It means everyone else must go to jail (you know the people who are alive) for using a drug that kid used in the past several months.  This doesn't apply to asprin, prozac, or st. john's wort cuz... well it just doesn't apply to them.  Cuz some kid himself and wrote about salvia months prior.  I don't think anyone who kills themselves ever used prozac or st. john's wort for depression.  And I don't think they should be banned.  Only salvia.  Cuz its dangerous.

I wonder if the parents of that kid thought their kid should have gone to jail?  Maybe that would have helped his depression- to be locked in a cage for nothing.  Cuz rather than banning sales, the laws also put anyone who posses it in jail.  And gives you a record- so you can't get a job.  Cuz being put in jail and having a felony record is much better then smoking  a plant and having an experience for 5 minutes.  Jail and felony records are the only way to save americans from drugs that could get you high for 5 minutes.

I love the North Carolina Congressman's fumbled excuse for why he was trying to outlaw salvia in his state, he eventually went somewhere like "drug abuse is tearing families apart"
That's right kids, your junkie mother left you after a salvia trip, yep, that's what did it!

Lol I actually came across an article once that was like "obviously, teens driving on salvia is a huge concern!" obviously, cause you know those crazy teens, always trying to drive while visting other dimensions. I can barely operate my brain on Sally, much less a car, JEEBUS!

The worst part of it all is that when confronted with a lack of evidence for any salvia related crime or injuries etc. these pieces of breathing excrement make the ultimate argument from ignorance by saying "We're tying to prevent future drug problems" UNBELIEVABLE! The drug dosen't have to be proven harmful before its outlawed!

"Um you know Senator, no one has died on salvia yet" Seator HamBeast: "I know! That's exactly why we must act NOW to prevent it!!!" "But people have smoked salvia extracts for decades now..." "EXACTLY! YOUR CHILDREN ARE IN DAAAAAANGER!!!!"
