Click the radio button "Use the following IP Address", the boxes will become active.

Hold on. You can't get a static IP address like that. Can you post the link to the instructions page?

Your ISP gives you your IP address. Look it up online, there are websites that will tell you what it is.

You are trying to get a static IP with your router, correct?  You can look up what your current IP is by going to RUN, and typing "cmd" to get a command prompt.  Then use "ipconfig /all" and it will tell you everything you need to know.

Correct.  That is how you would configure a computer to use a static IP address, not how you get a static IP address.  Usually, the static IP address you get from your ISP would be programmed into the router rather than the computer.  However, this is usually only needed if you are serving data.

If you are talking about a static IP address in your local area network, which is what I suspect, then a lot depends upon the type of router you have.  Usually, you can take the numbers that you get on the dynamic side, hard code them as static, and it will work... but not always.

Oh right, of course. He's trying to set up port forwarding, which requires you to know what your local IP is and programming that into the router.

Bridgelisa: find out what your current IP address is by going to Run, typing cmd, and then using the command ipconfig /all.
Then put those numbers into the box you showed in that screenshot.

Your IP address will be 192.168.##.10

You don't need an alternate DNS, you can leave it blank if you want.

No, because that's not his external IP.

And MAC address doesn't matter, because it's not broadcast over the internet. A lot of people don't realise this!

i  know it wasn't his external ip, i just think it's funny that he censored out default numbers.

Let me guess his network.
192.168.1.0/24
or
192.168.0.0/24
or
192.168.2.0/24

BTW. The port forwarding option is supposed to be setup in your router, not the network node.

u do it in both.  u have to set your pc to static and give it an ip like 198.162.1.100 then u go to the gaming tab in your router and forward what ever port u are trying to forward to that ip.

Don't forget the triggering too! If he has one machine triggering can be used if he's DHCP.

Good Luck
