Just a quickie.......the mycelium smells like mushrooms but a bit on the musty side I think. My brother (whom is not a fan of mushrooms) said he thought it smelled more like feet. Is it possible for contaminated mycelium to still give off a mushroom like odor? Thanks......

Feet=bad Musk=could equal bad, but feet for sure is not a good thing to smell. What you define as the smell of musk could be different from me. If it smells like arm pit then you could be in trouble.
MYC should smell fresh and mushroomy. I actually like the smell of my monotub it reminds me of the outdoors. If the smell makes you want to turn away you might want to throw the jars out. It's your call. You could also just isolate the jar(s) from the other batch. That can help too. Then if it fruits fine then you know you didn't have a contaminated culture. Instead you just had a funny smelling jar.
My best batch of PE all smell like mushrooms. It should also be noted that most cubes (at least the two wildly different strains I've grown) don't smell like commercial mushrooms. They smell 80% about the same but then their is a totally other note of smell I can't ever make out.
However my costa rican jars all had a strange metal smell to them. After looking around here and other forums it seems that although this smell is strange it is somewhat normal. Most people that had this smell said their jars came out fine. And so did mine. It just shows you that some weird smells can be okay, but still worrisome. So basically the grains smelled off a bit but the MYC they produced in their monotubs smelled totally normal. Also both the strains I've grown ended up smelling the same once they hit maturity (i.e full colonization).
Another thought to keep in mind is that when my monotubs were colonizing they produced a really strong sharp mushroom smell that went away as they rapidly developed.

Cool....thanks RonJohn7779. I am so close to victory after many failures I hope my mycelium is healthy and happy in its lil bag of grains. I wish I had more experience so I could judge for myself whether or not the smell is ok. It does smell a lil off to me but defiantly has a mushy smell. I'ma keep on keepin on.....
