connecticut mushrooms from the summer and fall, little ID help anyone?
    #9514285 - 12/29/08 06:58 PM (3 years, 4 months ago)

nice board you people have here.

I have been trying to get serious with mushroom ID but Im failing so far.  The few guide books i have are just not cutting it. This user forum might work.

Does anyone have any good books on where to even start with ID?

After just reading the faq, i realized i didnt take any spore prints, that will be on my list next year.  I never knew how to even take one but after taking all the time to resize the photos, i still want to post them.  Im still not sure about the bruising thing but think i can figure that out.

here are some of the more neat ones and my gusses.
I emphasize Guesses

If you upload to your shroomery account it creates a thumb, when you do, not sure if there are other ways to create a thumb.

Great pics, lots of good edibles.

Your aborted entoloma, is.

This is the  Aborted entoloma when it isn't:

At first glance #28 looks to be a spitting image of a Dryad's Saddle except that I don't think it grows in November. Anyway, great pics Jimmyinct and welcome to the forums. Out of curiosity, what state are you in?

# 8 would likely be Xeromphalina kauffmanii if they're on hardwood.

#25 is Amillaria gallica.

#18 is Macrolepiota procera.

#28 is Polyporus squamosus.

Nice pics.

I agree with you about #4 being Pholiota squarrosoides but it might also be Pholiota squarrosa, which would smell faintly "onion-like" with age. If it's the first one then it's edible, if it's the second one then it's not recommended because it might have type 8 toxins resulting in digestive upset, got that from my book not experience. They both grow at the same time of the year.

You're right.Another way you can tell the difference (without a scope or sitting there watching the gills mature) is that Pholiota squarrosoides has a somewhat tacky cap, where as Pholiota squarrosa has a dry cap.

So we'd have to know if it was sticky or not.Still bet Pholiota squarrosoides.

you guys are great.
I went back and added in the IDs to the previous post, linked it in other posts, and gave credit.

Im suprised no one could Id #9,13, or 26, they just seems unique.

Im going to buy some of the those field guides.  I alerady have a few but seeing that people use more than one is helpful.

Im frusted with the ID process. When I was a student many years ago, for biology, there were strict ID rules that could be used to ID certain species. Im having a hard time making sense of this for mushrooms, i guess mainly because it cant always be done with photos.

#27 might and I stress MIGHT be Clitocybe nuda/ Lepista nuda, synonym. As far as being frustrated with the ID process, once you get a couple of good field guides, it will get easier because the guides will show you "picture keys" to get you started in the right direction and then once you get to the beginning of each of the sections, you will have more "keys" to help narrow it down even further. And then it's just a matter of going from there. Don't worry, you'll get the knack of it before too long.

At first, I was thinking Cortinarius because of the orangeish coloring on the stem but I don't have any Cortinarius in any of my books that have that coloring, that's the reason I suggested Clitocybe nude, it's the only thing that I can find that comes close to matching the cap and gills. Anyway, it was worth a try.
