Graphic Novelist?

Does anyone know how to get into the graphic novels industry? I want to take some classes, or order some books or something to improve my character/figure drawing...any thoughts?
I am also thinking of getting into the Magic the Gathering industry (designing the card art, etc). I have been around the game my entire adolescent and adult life and I really enjoy the art and the lore behind it all, and I thought that it'd be a great career for me to get involved in.
I understand that I need to build up an artist's portfolio and really develop some good penmanship, so that's where I will be starting! I also have a degree in studio art, so at least I have that going for me

i was thinking more along the lines of the artistry; i am more interested in that side of things, though it all interests me greatly.
thanks for the input!

Well same concept for art i would say, except substitue publisher for whatever the art equivilent is.
i'd imagine that people hire freelance artists to do ads and stuff
you could seek out someone like that, and submit your work
would put some $ in your wallet, and put your name out there
i think you should develop a massive portfolio if you intend to be serious about it though

good ideas and points.
what i am looking for from here i guess is perhaps some good educational resources? some figure drawing books that are geared toward that type of art which I am talking about.
my area of choice lies mostly in the digital realm, and the physical sculptural realm. i don't have a TON of experience or practice in drawing, but I know I would be able to with the right teaching(s).

i think education would be pretty beneficial. have you considered higher education with a focus on art ?
i would imagine being exposed to art history, all types of art, and being in a setting that is dictated by art would open up your pallet so to speak

concept art is a very competitive industry.
im in a game design school right now and we've had alot of exposure and lectures from current industry professionals about art jobs in entertainment.
if you totally want to devote your life to it than I would suggest checking out a company called 'Massive Black'. theyre a well respected concept art group that get hired for many different types of media, and they also have a pretty cheap school program, but you have to have a good portfolio to get accepted. i believe the school is in San Fransisco. anyways, if you studied with those dudes you would be in a really good position.
if you're unable to do that, then I would suggest regularly visiting websites like conceptart.org or cgsociety.com look at as much professional work as you can and study it. ask yourself what makes it a powerful piece.
get some anatomy books start drawing the human figure everyday all day. every free minute you have. and while you're at it, draw everything all day. get a bunch of muscle magazines to draw from. post your images on professional art forums and get them critiqued.
be careful with schools. there might be some good ones out there for you with good teachers and classes, but a degree is not going to help you at all to get a concept art job. it's totally about your portfolio so make sure school is just more practice on top of your free-time practice.
you mentioned your into digital? get a pen tablet and a paint program (photoshop, etc)
you probably already know this, but stay loose and focus on fundamentals of drawing and color theory. don't try and make any finished or polished pieces for a long time.
you will have to make this your obsession if you want to succeed. it's really really hard. but if you truly love the work than go for it.
hope this helps

btw, the school i go to is the Guildhall at SMU (Texas)
they have a concept art track but you spend ALOT of time learning 3d software and working on other projects, which means you lose alot of time you could be drawing.
there is another interesting point here though. it would be easier to get hired at a game company for something like 3d modelling, and then you have your foot in the door and you work your way towards a concept art position if you're good enough. i've talked to several concept artists that graduated from my school who got their job exactly this way.

thanks Grav, that was exactly the advice I needed.
do you have any good links to some good drawing boards/stands? some good supplies sites? i need paper, pencils, and some type of desk/painter's stand (not sure what you call them...)
I own a digital tablet now, it has a pen. it's a Wacom brand, 8x11 I think. and I also own photoshop CS2.

i think all you need is a sketchbook and whatever kind of pens and pencils you like. just start figure drawing until you go mad, and make sure to use lots of good reference.
don't try and stylize until you've gotten really good at drawing what you see. also, split the human body up. draw nothing but eyes for a week, then noses, than mouths, then the whole face from every perspective, progress through the whole body.
go to conceptart.org and look for beginner advice/tutorial threads.

yeah, i signed up there and i already coursed through several of those tutorials.
there isn't anyway getting around it though, i need a good desk; i like to at least work in comfort and at an angle. are there any podium/desk mount types of things that you are familiar with? i don't want to work crouched over.

didn't read thread.
i don't know. me and a friend are making a graphic novel just for the sake of it.
you could probably find a writer, and make a graphic novel. that would go pretty far towards making graphic novels i would imagine.

books books books (for free) Andrew Loomis is key for a good foundation in perspective and figure drawing, even though he wrote in the 1950s Good videos, but expensive You should of course respect their copyright, and NEVER EVER get those videos from rapidshare or bittorrent. Learn basic color theory online. The basics of presenting your work properly. practice practice practice more resources than you can shake a stick at

Here's a pretty decent looking draft table on the Boeing surplus website. Might be worth checking out.
https://active.boeing.com/assocproducts/surplus/ItemDetails.cfm?auctionID=8004&pageID=m43402
-------------------- 1) Cars can hurt you.
2) You cannot fly.
3) It's never a good time to die.
4) Taking your clothes off will draw attention.
5) Keep your mouth shut at all times while in public.
6) Although you may see things that are not there, you won't NOT see things that are there.
7) Don't forget how to breathe.
8) Only carry: a house-key, some loose change, and your address in your shoe.
9) Nobody can tell that you are tripping until you tell them "I'm tripping".
10) No matter how fucked-up you think you are, you'll eventually come down.

Just wait until you get a bit older and instead of not being able to remember the name of something, you walk into a room to do something and forget what you came in there for.
